KR Kedaranathan

I have met him several times and have heard him sing (not in a concert, though). He was extremely talented. He would have been a true 'vaarisu' of SSI and might have been a shining star. He was highly individualistic and that sometimes landed him in trouble. Hard to believe he was the brother of Atmanathan, the Sadasivams' guardian angel...

Well, I found out that KR Kedaranathan and KR Kumaraswamy were known as the "Palghat Brothers," trained under ShrI SSI. Sadly, ShrI KR Kumaraswamy Iyer lost his voice sometime and while serving as head of the Swathi Thirunal Academy at Thiruvanantapuram he had published books (as per the foreward in advaita kIrtanAnanda lahari). Hopefully some audios of this duo will surface......

K.R.Kedaranathan's one brother is K.R.Atmanathan who was a secretary of MSS and he was more of a family member. He could be contacted for any information about his deceased brother. He also composed some songs which were sung by MSSkmrasika wrote:I read the demise of this personality in the Hindu and wondered if anyone had heard this artiste. Apparently his brothers are performing artistes amd nd good teachers as well.

K.R.Kedaranathan was Chemmangudi's disciple, yes. He had his training under his older brother K.R.Kumaraswamy Iyer.
K.R.Kumaraswamy Iyer was a musician of his own right. His Guru was Maha Vidwan Mecheri Sundaresa Sastrigal.
They all hail from Kettavaram Palayam, a small town now (then a village) from North Arcot District (near Polur)
Kumaraswamy Iyer worked with Semmangudi and GNB and the greats of yester years and was a Vice Principal under Semmangudi and GNB.
He was the principal in Thirupani Thurai and subsequently was also the principal of Thiruvanathapuram Swathi Thirunal Academy after GNB.
Yes, he lost his voice very early during his prime concert years, probably due to excessive practice at very high pitch ( formation of nodules in the vocal cards - exceeding the limits of Hooks law, I guess!)
Little known/mis quoted facts are:
He and Anuthama (the famous writer of yester years, the author of Kettavaram) are also related.
He and Late Swami Haridos Giri were also related.
His music was much spoken about his colleagues like Late Sri. C.S.Krishna Iyer. A lot of published list of semmangudi's disciples were his disciples..
The list goes like this: Chertalai Gopalan Nair ( father of Omana Kutti), Parasalai Ponnamma, Trivandrum R.S Mani, Thiruvizha Jayashankar (nadaswara vidwan), and K.J. Jesudas (of course)
BTW, K.R.K (umaraswamy | edharanathan) were NOT known to be Palghat Brothers, as K.R.Kumaraswamy Iyer never lived in Palghat, but Kedaranathan lived in Palghat and worked as a professor there in the music college for many years before moving to Chennai somewhere in late 80's.

ashoksubra Sir:
Thank you for the info. Yes, I have heard Dr Omanakutty's music(very good) and tiruvizhA jayaShankar's handling of his instrument is such that it sounds more vocal music -like.
I was surprised not a lot of people in Palghat know of their music heritage. With famous composers like paramEShvara bhAgavatar and musicians like the late KVN (I understand he is from kalpathy grAma) and kEdAranAthan, I thought they should be proud os the fact.

The 'pattar' website has a long list of people from Kerala who have contributed in the field of Carnatic music.

Hello Kmrasika:
The both are my "mama-thatha's" (my mother's uncles) and the older KRK married my mother's older sister and that's how I know these (so, he is my perippa too!) . I have heard a tape of Kumaraswamy Iyer teaching Radha Viswanathan back in late 70's and early 80's at MSS's residence. With his very strained voice, his imagination on Raga, Neraval and Kalpana Swarams were simply mind boggling..!
He apparently used to have classes through Trivandrum Radio back in 40's I am sure somebody out there, has his old recordings. I was told my an older gentleman that his old recordings were in Trichi Radio station and Trivandrumm Radio station. May be something in Royal archives of Trivandrum too..!
Since he lost his voice during the prime of his career, he was never known to the musicians of Chennai much, though almost all the senior musicians of 40-80's knew him so well and had utmost respect for his music. As C.S Krishna Iyer notes in his forward to K.R.Kumaraswamy Iyer's publication of Advaidhanandha Lahari (a compilation of Achyutha Dasa Krithis to which he has tuned and notated), His music was indescribable.. "Eellakani vivarimbalenu Sala swanubhava vedyame".
His musical prowess was recognized by Late Muthiabhagavathar who set up the academy in Trivandurm and he was the one to bring Kumaraswamy Iyer to Trinvandrum Academy as a professor.
Some of his musical compositions are the famous Visveswara Darisanakaran (Sindhu Bhairavi) and Sadhananda Thaandavam (Bahudhaari). The book of Swathuithirunal Krithis complied by Late Prof. S. Ramanathan mentions his immense help in notating a lot of what people here today of Swathi Thirunal.
He was not meant to have his glory I guess, like a lot of unrecognized greats that have lived through ages...!

dear Rasikas
K. R Kumara Swami moulded Yesudass. One of my relatives told me that Yesudas never used show respect to any of his teachers( beyond ceartain limit I mean), but K R Kumara Swami was an exception to this. He also mentioned Kumara swami lost hsi voice due to over straining. Semmangudi used to sit in his Chair and poor Kumara Swami handled Semmangudi's classes.

ashOk subra and sivachinta1965 or any other folks
I have a relative who is close to 88 years , incidentally he came to know thru my mother nowadays that I am listening to Carnatic music a lot . He was at Trivandrum/Palghat belt for few years . I told my favourite musicians are madurai mani and semmangudi ,he told me that there was one singer in 1940's by name KR KumarAswami , who had so much manOdharmam and a lovely weighty voice , I just asked if he was better than many musicians including my top two , he said absolutely his music is mesmerizing. Incidentally in one of the posts above , it is mentioned that sadAnanda tAndavam in bahudAri was tuned and popularized by him
Incidentally he made a passing mention that kumarAswami lost his voice little early as he used to over practice. By any chance any recordings of this artist . (cool u could be our saviour here).
Mods:
Can you change the title to KR Kedarnathan- KR kumAraswami Iyer

dear RnJi,
I tried my best to get some recording of Kumaraswami, but could not.
He lost his voice in 40s and there were no recording 9 spool) those days.
He might have cut some discs like Trippunithura Viswanatha Bhagavathar, Madurai Kesava Bhagavathar, Desamangalam Subramanya Iyer. Kalyana Krishna Bhagavathar ( all from Kerala).
You can check with RandorGuy.

My mother has consented to share a 10 minute clipping of her practice session with KRK recorded at the Kalki Gardens. Though he was quite old at that time (apart from having "lost" his voice at a young age), KRK's Manodharma comes through beautifully.

Thanks definitely he has a lot of stuff at even that old age. Perhaps you can ask your amma a lot about shri KR kumAraswamy and post few interesting anecdotes .
I am assuming training with KRK , your mother Smt rAdhA must have got strong foundation that helped her to support with a high ,sustained and non sagging voice pitch .
