"Varsha----I can see him walking into welcoming arms of a friend .
Where do all giants go to ?
Heaven . Of course .
Varsha,
If all the giants are in heaven, I wonder if some of them - GNB and MMI in particular, welcome MSG and say, "OK, once you have rested and feasted, let us get going with some quality concerts - stuff we should have done more of while down there, but somehow didn't quite get to do". Everytime, after hearing the Nattakurinji concert of GNB and the Thodi concert of MMI, I would wonder why these two giants did not do more concerts with MSG. That they had the benefit of Lalgudi and TNK alone cannot explain this shortage? I have heard unsubstantiated anecdotes of Vembu Iyer's role in MMI and MSG not doing concerts together, but GNB? Surely he could recognize true talent when he saw it? KMH in post 97

That still does not solve / answer the mystery of why MMI and GNB had very less concerts with MSG as compared to what they had with the other 2 violin greats.cacm wrote:BOTH Vembu Iyer & MMI were huge FANS of MSG & MSG RECIPROCATED it also.....

EESHA,
The answer to your "answer/ mystery" is very simple but I can only give vague hints here as I have to obey my own theorem; It has to do with Sabha Secretaries who dictated the accompanists esp if they had to respond to their members and various admirers of Carnatic Music who felt he was "mixing" North Indian style etc however UNJUSTIFIED this may be. Actually his career as accompanist to leading Carnatic Musicians of that time actually took off only after he started playing to the expectations of "DIE HARD" Rasikas.

Re: Shri MSG passes away
There can be simple explanations - MSG might have played more Hindustani concerts early in his career. There is a famous Music Academy concert of Omkarmath Thakur with MSG. There is also an MMI concert recording with MSG and VR - RTP - Karaharapriya.
One can not judge popularity based on available recordings alone - there were many other violinists who accompanied all the great starlwarts in many concerts - Govindaswamy Naicker, Govindaraja Pillai, Sundaresa Iyer, Varahur Muthuswamy Iyer, Chitoor RS Gopalakrishnan, ...
BTW, MSG had accompanied for MLV in several concerts and also Radha & Jayalakshmi .

MSG's genius needs no more reinforcement. But I want to share some lighter side. During one of his US tours, I was told by an organizer about this. The concert was to be from 6 to 9 PM. MSG was all ready and occupied the stage at 6. There were only a handful of people and the organizer said," let us wait for some time". MSG replied" I can wait as long as you want. My clock has started at 6 and I will play until 9. It is up to you as to when the concert should start. I will end it at 9 as per our contract". I am sure he dealt with all the NA organsiers who are a clone of the Madras sabhas the same way. What a determination considering that Carnatic musicians have not heard the word "contract" and even if they did they don't know how to honor it!

Does anyone have the full recording of the Hindustani concert of MSG duet with Sultan Khan shown as a brief Bhairavi clip on You Tube?

Shri RSachi, I have already linked to that somewhere in this thread. There is a beautiful Madhuvanti and Bhairavi in that set of videos.

Thank you very much for clearing up a matter that was a genuine area of concern for me. As a die hard fan of MSG, I am relieved. However: I am a rasika, and I have a right to say and ask questions about things that interest me. My post 97 was born out of total bhakti for the music of MSG - especially as an accompanist to such greats as GNB and MMI whom also I revere. Nor was I insinuating/propogating anything remotely mischievous about Vembu Iyer as you point out in rude all- caps. As for not willing to share such wonderful recordings, I am sure the loss will be an unbearable one for me, but I will learn to live with it.

I don't think Shri cacm intends to be rude to anyone on the forum. That is just his way of responding on the forum. I think some of these etiquette is set in stone that a slight deviation from it would be considered rude or offensive. I can assure you that he intends no offense to anyone (I haven't met him. At least based on his posts on the forum!)
At the same time, I think it is (sort of) hard to be objective on something that you almost worship. For e.g. it is a widely known fact that post 1960, GNB had shruti issues. However, I get very touchy when someone tells me that the recording I am listening to doesn't have very good shruti adherence. In a similar fashion, Shri cacm's admiration for MMI borders on that.

As for not willing to share such wonderful recordings, I am sure the loss will be an unbearable one for me, but I will learn to live with it. WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I HAVE CLOSE TO MORE THAN 300 CONCERTS OF MMI IN HARD DISC; THEY ARE NOT CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO ACCOMPANISTS. I WILL BE HAPPY TO SHARE THEM FREE OF COST IF SUITABLE MECHANISMS CAN BE WORKED OUT.
MY VIEW IS: THE GREATS SANG THEIR HEARTS OUT & HAVING TALKED TO MOST OF THEM THEY WANTED THEIR EFFORTS SHARED WITH RAASIKAS.

Dear Sreebeecane- Pl excuse if I have mis-spelt your handle!.....Thanks for helping out an old man! I am happy to inform you that I am EQUALLY fanatic in my admiration for GNB! As a matter of fact I PREFER to spend lot of time listening learning & talking to the original artists before stating any opinions. Though I have been arranging Carnatic Music Concerts since 1960 in N.A. of the various artists of "Today", I have been unable to listen to artists ENOUGH after 1960; Hence I restrict myself to not commenting on "To-day's" Artist due to lack of data. The one thing I know(after learning Vocal, Flute & Mridangam for about 10 years) is that I found Theoretical Physics EASIER and made that my profession! Regs, VKV

We will miss MSG
It is with love that we refer to Padma Bhushan MS Gopalakrishnan by the acronym MSG.
It was in 1983 during my final year at IITM that I had the privilege of learning music from Padma Bhushan TV Gopalakrishnan - during that time I attended a concert of his on a rainy Sunday night at AG's office in Mount Road.
I arrived at the office well before the concert started and stood up as TVG entered the hall.
The first question that TVG asked was 'MSG vandaachaa'?
There was so much of love, respect and expectation in that expression.
Indeed, that was the closest that I had seen MSG although I had seen and heard him play on various other occasions particularly at CLT. This was almost 30 years ago. I remember a fairly elaborate hamsanandi
where I observed MSG' finger movement and enjoyed the rich tone of the accompaniment. I also remember the nod of approval from a very discerning audience when TVG sang the well known slokam 'ambikam
bhagavatim vANi ramA sEvitAm' and switched to the raga kalyani at the mention of the word 'kalyanim' in the sloka.
Many of my friends at IITM and I would discuss his bowing and his playing in awe. Many of my violinist friends and I have gaped at his playing an entire varnam on one string.
What was the magic that he could bring to his tonal quality? How could one explain his uncanny ability to elicit a headshake and a 'wow' from anyone listening to the very first phrase of his raga delineation particularly in ragamalikas and viruttams? Above all, how can one forget his third kaala staccato svaras rendered with precision?
How can one forget his accompaniment to GNB's pallavi in Nattakkurinji 'koniyaada taramaa' in a recording that was circulating amongst karnatic music aficionados in the 1980s? Probably the most memorable vagadisvari that I have heard is that of MSG accompanying TK Rangachari, again one that I had heard in a tape circulating in the US in the 1980s. How could one forget his tarana in bhairavi that became a standard fare in his concerts?
Fast forward several years to 1997 just prior to his Sangita Kalanadhi award at the Music Academy. His lecture demonstration at the Main Hall at at the Academy was packed. He and his daughter Dr Narmadha concluded his lec/dem with a short taanam in the five ghana ragas and left the audience mesmerized.
I saw him in full flow in Cleveland a couple of years ago as a near octogenarian when he received the Sangita Ratnakara award.
I have had the privilege of him being in the audience during one of my lec/dems. The last time I saw the maestro was at a lec/dem at the Music Academy where he and his daughter Narmadha illustrated various techniques of the Parur style to a packed hall.
When he left the hall, an audience member interrupted him with a question. His smiling answer was, '"From now on please pose your queries to Narmadha'!
MSG will be missed by every rasika; more so by every Karnatic musician who has ever played or even touched a violin!

Re: Shri MSG passes away
Sreebeecane, Cacm, Varsha,
Thank you all for leavening the issue. Saturday is the first day of the week for me, and I was operating all day, hence the delayed rejoinder.
Sreebeecane, your explanation is much appreciated - I feel very much at home in the forum now. My dear friend Sri Nageswaran introduced me to the forum in 2009, but I have been unpardonably poor in participation. MSG's passing away affected me more deeply than I expected, and I had to share my grief with think-alikes, and hence I turned to the forum. Had I been more regular in the past, I would have perhaps understood Shri Cacm's use of all caps.
Cacm, As mentioned above, had I been frequenting the forum, my post would not have upset you as it did - I would have already established my adulations (to the point of being fanaticism) for GNB as well Madurai Mani Iyer. As has been mentioned by more than one member, I get very touchy too, whenever anything remotely unflattering is said about GNB. With Mani Iyer, the situation is a happy one - I haven't yet come across a single rasika who has anything negative to say about him. I therefore find myself in the extremely comfortable position of being in total agreement with you and many others in the forum. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for the offer of MMI's concerts. I have a fair collection myself, but nowhere near as many as yours, and I would be delighted to take you up on your offer. I stay in Muscat, but travel at least once a year to UK/USA, and more than once to India. I am sure I will find a way soon to touch base with you. I understand and accept your take on all-caps.
Varsha - you know my location now - I hope you are just round the corner!
(and have a huge collection of vintage music!)

Re: Shri MSG passes away
MSG's music shall always be associated with technical wizardry .And a continuous flow from the sublime to sublime . It is in this context that when I had chanced upon several spool recordings , a decade ago, I never had the urge to split the tracks into songs etc .
They have been retained as it is - with the 72 minute tracks fused into one , for the spool.
The joy of listening to such immaculate recordings ,is beyond words .
And is very special in the context of MSG .
With this , I conclude my tribute to the Master .
http://www.mediafire.com/?wz461o8st978g
I have not edited out the other Artists who pop in and out as fillers ..A GNB here , A Dandapani Desigar or a SB , there .
Nine Spool recordings in all .
And for those who wish to tip their hat , Please do it in favour of Cleveland Sundaram who graciously converted it - And many more - for me(us).

And for those who wish to tip their hat , Please do it in favour of Cleveland Sundaram who graciously converted it - And many more - for me(us).

Re: Shri MSG passes away
Varsha,
Many thanks for the ivaluable clips.
11 mins of sublime Kapi. Dorai's mridangam is top class, subtle and soothing.
And over an hour of rtp in shanmugapriya - What control over the voice and the string. Sweet and Crisp music. SUPERB. A 1960 recording I suppose. Both in their early 30s. Which means the rigor in practrice alone would have made them master the ART at that young age!
Thanks again.

Bilahari, All,bilahari wrote:KMH, you had mentioned a bEhAg RTP of MSG. Would it be possible to upload it if it's not commercial? Thank you.
Here is the link to behag RTP by MSG, uploaded to the public folder of my dropbox. This is the first time I am doing this, so please forgive me if it does not work! As for the commercial part of it, I am not aware of any such issues. I am unable to trace the source of this file. I can state honestly though that I have not used this material at any time in any commercial way.

Re: Shri MSG passes away
My immediate thought would be MSG and Narmada, of course, but I couldn't say for sure. As I wrote, long back, I had made a folder - "MSG- RTPs". And I seem to have always seen this Behag bit in it, with no idea of who or wherefrom I copied it on to this folder. Sorry for not being able to add more information.

No problem, I also think it must be Narmadha.

Mention of Narmadha reminds me of something ...Rsachi wrote:No problem, I also think it must be Narmadha.
MSG's last word was "Narmadha". He called her out and breathed his last.

Re: Shri MSG passes away
Eesha,
The marble rock Narmada ravine near Jabalpur and the waterfalls of Narmada are extremely beautiful. MSG must have named his daughter after the long river at the middle of North and South India, as a symbol of the music from MSG's bow which was equally touching - be it the flow of Hindustani or of Carnatic music!
I just read this:
Legends also say that for Lord Shiva, the Hindu God, the river is especially sacred on account of its origin, and it is often called Shankari, i.e., daughter of Shankar (Lord Shiva). All the pebbles rolling on its bed are said to take the shape of his emblem with the saying, "Narmada Ke Kanker utte Sankar" (a popular saying in the Hindi belt of India), which means that ‘pebble stones of Narmada get a personified form of Shiva’. These lingam shaped stones (cryptocrytalline quartz), called Banalinga also called (Banashivalingas) are much sought after for daily worship by the Hindus.[14] The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, constructed by Rajaraja Chola, has one of the biggest Banalingas. Adi Shankara met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada on the banks of the river Narmada.

And, here is a top notch Kedar (Hamir Kalyani): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tptS4L1hum0 (Hindustani aficionados would recognize the bandish as 'kanha re nand nandan')

Bilahari - yes that was a beautiful piece.
Soon after I got married I visited Shri MSG's apartment with my wife. Such a simple existence he led and yet what grand music he produced!
