Minor nitpick. KVN bday is: 15-11-23
Otherwise it will be centenary year this year

I think this is 1967 Academy concert. Voice is so fluid & you will hear only Akara. Raghu's playing & Tani Avartanam is another highlight of this concert.

One of the most majestic versions of shri subrahmaNyAya namastE from KVN is from a Bombay concert with VVS / Raghu in the mid-80s. Simply incredible stuff - I have 10-15 versions of this song by KVN and this is by far my favourite. It's available here: http://www.sangeethamshare.org/sridhara ... arch_1986/
The entire concert is just superb with VVS and Raghu the perfect foils for KVN who is in cruise control mode...

This one is a 1969 Academy Concert with V. Sethuramaiah, Raghu and Nagarajan. Amongst other pieces, this concert has the sAvERi thiruppavai - undu madahaLitha, dEvi brOVa - chintAmaNi, ninnuvinA gA mari - pUrvikalyANi, pAhimAm brihannAyikE - husEni etc. The 1967 would have been a all Thyagaraja kriti concert - with MSG and co with kaligiyunTE as main.

The discourse between Paramacharya & Ariyakudi On the Kriti Sri Subrahmanyaaya Namaste is well known. This has reappeared in The Hindu on 4th Jan 13. See the beautiful sketch of Paramacharya & Ariyakudi by Keshav.

Re: Sri Subrahmanyaaya Namaste -Khambhoji-KVN-VS-Raghu
I was momentarily shocked to see a 'Vel' in Paramacharya's lap. Then, I realized that his Dhandam should have looked like a 'Vel' to Keshav as the subject matter is Subrahmanya, not very different from the suswaram we hear when our honourable artistes sing loads of apaswaram!See the beautiful sketch of Paramacharya & Ariyakudi by Keshav.
We know that a cartoonist of Keshav's stature would have done it by design, and Hindu editorial team has passed it by design. We should learn to see it right.
Sorry, I'll write about another "Subrahmanyaaya Namaste' version later.

FIRST LP RECORD OF KVN
The first LP record of KVN accompanied by TNK & Raghu. Hariharaputram -Vasantha-Dikshitar. Blemishless rendering. A melting Vasantha.

Yes Arasi mami. I have heard your compositions sung by Sumitra Nitin. I liked & particularly the Tamizh is easy on the tongue. Something like Vedanayakam Pillai Songs. Initially I thought it was compositions of her mother Mrs Sujata Vijayaraghvan. Later I was told it is yours.

KNV,
The Hariharaputram EP was at Sangeet Natak Academy Delhi listening room. I used to go there and heard it a few times. I didn't know then how potent and long-standing the KVN-TNK-PRR combination was.
Thanks!

Rsachi This must have been recorded in 1962. AIR used to play for long period. KVN-TNK-Raghu combination continued till 1975 when TNK stopped playing accompaniment except for Semmangudi

My swara gnanam is limited. Only experts can confirm. When he teaches this song he would emphasise on the plain note shadjam ha ri portion instead of taking the support of the preceding & succeeding note(melendho Keezhendho edukkama hit the shadjam note bang on its note). There is beauty in singing this way but I don't know how many really appreciate such nuances. Again some may say that it is his perception/padam.
Arasi as for swaras -liked your comment that much only the plate can hold. May the training of his great master. Innum venum nu ninaikarappa mudichiduvar. When you think you want more he will stop it.

Re: FIRST LP RECORD OF KVN
KNV,
Thanks for your kind words.
Good to know you are the master's son I knew your father as a little girl. I remember him as being a bit shy but very pleasant. He took his singing very seriously--by which I mean, his commitment to his art was evident even then, to a mere child. Though I left India nearly half a century ago, listening to recorded concerts of his, and later on getting a couple of chances to hear him in person in the US meant a great deal to me. Coming to the season from the mid-nineties offered me a chance to hear him again in person. He was ailing. Still, what music!

Re: FIRST LP RECORD OF KVN
That is patently not true. If you look at the MMA lists TNK played for several artistes well into the mid 1980s. I am glad that these things are well documented in the archives.KNV1955 wrote:Rsachi This must have been recorded in 1962. AIR used to play for long period. Here are some examples I pulled out.
1980: Maharajapuram Santhanam: http://www.musicacademymadras.in/golden ... e_1980.php
1981: TN Seshagopalan: http://www.musicacademymadras.in/golden ... e_1981.php
1983: Trichur Ramachandran http://www.musicacademymadras.in/golden ... e_1983.php
1985: N Ramani http://www.musicacademymadras.in/golden ... e_1985.php
The last year he played as an accompanist that I see was in 1988 for Semmangudi (with Trichy Sankaran & Harishankar) for the concert with paTTi viDuva rAdu that is played in a number of contexts including Sankaran's interactive session. Most of this concert is in youtube.

KNV, but you mentioned in your post that TNK stopped playing as an accompanist for everyone except Semmangudi in 1975 and that was inaccurate. Of course you are more aware of when he stopped accompanying with KVN.

Re: FIRST LP RECORD OF KVN
Yes. I know he played for others for a while. I didn't want to go into details.I know KVN-TNK_Raghu combination broke around that time. Raghu continued for some more years & later Narendran was accompanying him for some years. I don't remember dates etc. Even year 1962 may be wrong. It could be even earlier. I remember we children (my sisters & myself) were living in Jamshedpur between 61 to 63 with my Grand Parents (mother side) & we used to take the plate & play it in road side shops since we didn't have a Gramaphone record player at home. Later I must have heard this in AIR Chennai atleast 100 times. It vanished suddenly & when I checked up with AIR they said they don't have it. Suddenly I got from a friend of mine & he found in AIM site. It cannot be recorded & I don't know why.

Re: FIRST LP RECORD OF KVN
TNK has accompanied MDR in the 80s too, if my recordings are correctly dated. The last accompaniment documented online is for SSI's CMANA concert in 1994 on YouTube.
I'm glad many of our current generation violinists benefited from accompanying KVN - Nagai Muralidharan's accompaniment to his 1993 Stanford concert and Varadarajan's accompaniment to his 2001 season concert stand out in my memory.

Re: FIRST LP RECORD OF KVN
This is natural - TNK having played for Ariyakudi (KVN's guru) for so many years .... From a rasika perspective, KVN concerts with accompaniments of MSG, VVS and MC, Raghu, UKS and VR were quite popular. TNK did accompany only selected concerts beyond 80s; some Semmangudi, Kalyanakrishna Bagavathar , some MDR concerts (later MDR concerts also featured VV Ravi, L. Subramanian, ...). There was BMK concert @ Nanganallur Anjaneyar temple - BMK / TNK / UKS / Harishankar.

I had the privilege of watching TNK playing accompaniment last to Semmangudi mama sometime around 2000/2001 @ Parthasarathy Swami Sabha with UKS. What a khAmbhOji that concert had! In fact that was one amongst the last 1 or 2 concerts of Semmangudi mama. Wonder if someone has recorded that.bilahari wrote:The last accompaniment documented online is for SSI's CMANA concert in 1994 on YouTube.
I was told that TNK has also accompanied Yesudoss along with Bhakthavatsalam as a team, for sometime in the 90's.

There is a rendering of 'Pahi Janani in Nattaikurinji' which is so good.
Mridangam may be Palghat Raghu.
That concert has also Thodi as main and a superb srinvasa in karaharapriya
Really a sublime concert
