Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan in NJ, Octover 27, 2012

Post by rshankar »

I am posting this on behalf of of forumite, Smt. Ambika Raman.
Smt. Rama is one of India's leading bharatanatyam exponents of today, and this program should be wonderful. And to quote her, she learned to dance from Smt. Yamini Krishnamurthy and learned how to be a dancer from her mother-in-law, Smt. Saroja Vaidyanathan.

Brave lady! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Jest aside, my best wishes for the program.

I have once seen Yamini Krishnamurthy perform in the late 1970s. I have rarely seen any individual exercise such control of rhythm like she did. Glad to see that her style is still being carried forward.

Btw, is Smt Yamini still active? I would imagine she is in her 70s by now.

Ramesh, LOL..But appears to be a true statement in her case and not merely lip service. IIRC, she used to run a dance school called the Yamini-Saroja school of dance - but I think she is currently the director of Smt. Saroja Vaidyanathan's school, Ganesha Natyalaya.

No clue if Smt. Yamini is still performing, but she has a school in Delhi. While I agree with you that her earlier performances (that I watched courtesy of DD) were really great (I loved the intros by her dad) - but I have to 'fess that when I had an opportunity to watch her live (in Chandigarh, on several occasions) in the late 80's it was not at all visually appealing to me.
