Having worked as Music Teacher for more than 35 years in the Govt. Institutions of Music & Dance of Andhra Pradesh I have always been experimenting upon my students to quicken the process of teaching Karnataka Music and to initiate the students sing Svarakalpana & Ragalapana minimising their dependency upon the teacher. Many aspirants are stuggling hard for much time to sing Svarakalpana & Ragalapana on their own. This kind of discussion helps them much

Respected Akella Mallikarjuna Sarma Sir,

My humble namaskarams and pranamams to you. Iam disciple of Sri Ampolu Murali krishna garu (vijayawada). He presented me your Cassettes and book on Ragalapana , swarakalpana. Can you kindly guide me how to proceed to Raga alapana in classic style. (presently iam out of India). How does one get the style of ragaalapana like malladi bros, hyd sisters etc sing? Is it practice or listening or experience? If so what is the exact way of approaching it?

Regards
Jyothsna

Chi Jyothsna dear, Before entering into Svarakalpana you should practice the Jati Alankaras, the Jati breaks of Trisra, Khanda and Mishra Jatis in Chaturashra-gati, all with both the hands and in Eka-kala (4 units per beat per each second) and Dvi-kala (8 units per beat per 2 seconds) and later Chaturashra, Khanda and Mishra breaks in Trisra-gati.
All these things are furnished in my book, Sangita Svararaga Sudha. Recently I brought out another CD containing 9hrs. marterial of MP3 package containing all these things (priced at Rs.50/- only each). If you send somebody to me I shall pass it on. After following the items of this CD, which is pre-recorded along with beats of Metronome you have to practice the easy Muktaayis of all the 6 Talas, Roopaka, Trira Roopaka, Triputa, Adi (medium tempo), Adi (slow tempo) and Adi (trisra-gati) in this seriatim following the respective symbols. Never hesitate to practice the Chaturashra-gati with both the hands i.e., ‘ki – ta’ with the right hand and ‘ta – ka’ with the left hand, thus ‘ki-ta-ta-ka’, with both hands one after the other. For Ragalapana, you should practice each segment of a Raga, furnished in the Cassette for several times minding the different Kampitas and Gamakas and following them meticulously. In a month or two I am also bringing out all these 36 Ragalapanas in the form of MP3 CD in which all the segments of each Raga are given separate tracks to enable the aspirant practice along with the repeated segments. If you send somebody later, I shall pass on this CD also. Come to me when you happen to come to my place. Wishing you all the best. Amsharma.

Dear Mr Sarma
I fondly recall the wonderful lecdem you gave at Sastri Hall last year , on your way to Bangalore/Mysore (Organised by TRS).

This forum is indeed lucky to have caught your attention.
For someone who had always thought that Music teachers were a strict and humourless group , your teaching methods was a revelation to me.
I am not a student of music but the art of violin accompaniment in Cm has alwys fascinated me.That was what took me to the lecdem that day and i was mighty glad that you did not direct any of the questions at me ...!!!
I sincerely hope that rasikas here will have an opportunity to enjoy your inputs.

Dear Mr. Coolkarni, Thank you for reminding me the Lec-dem I gave in Chennai in Dec., 2004. In a Lec-dem generally I go on speaking about the subject. I don't put on any questions but I shall invite questions from the audience to clear off their doubts. That is why I did not put any questions in my Lec-dem. Generally, I prefer to hold Workshops than Lec-dems. I conduct Workshops for 2 to 3 days, @ 6 hrs. day i.e., from 10 am to 1 pm with a short light lunch break and again from 2 to 5 p.m. bringing out all the easy methods in Muktaayi-calculations of Svarakalpana in 6 Talas, Rupaka, trisra Rupaka, Trioputa, Adi (medium-tempo), Adi (Slow-tempo) and Adi (Trisra-gati) Talas along with a Lec-dem of Kampitas and Gamakas of 12 notes and a demonstration on Varna. I have been travelling our South-India extensively to propagate these easy methods to the aspirants as I have taken this as my mission of life even without expecting any monetary benefit.
So, thus, I expect to meet you again in near future at one place or other and then I don't forget to question you. OK. With regards, amsharma.

Chi.Jyothsna dear, It is not feasible to send this CD by e-mail as it is in the MP3 package containing material more than 600 MB. So, if you arrange to send somebody to me I shall give it to that person in turn to enable him to send it to you by Air Mail or by some other means. amsharma.

msakella Sir,
I would like to purchase this in CD format. I think you mentioned elsewhere that it is a supplement to your book Sangita svara raga sudha which details swarakalpana and raga alapana learning.
Please let me know the shop and location in Hyd where I can purchase this book and the CD.
Thank you
