You are indeed Telepathic! I was thinking this morning to post requesting for a translation but was tiedup whole day. Now I find you have posted it just like that. Thank you and thanks for confirming that minds do function in synchrony though we have not yet found the means of detecting the connections as otherwise how could DRS have listened to the mind-talk!

Dear all, I am a new member in rasika.org.. Just chanced across this site..
I am great fan of Sri. TRS.. I have always felt sad, Sri.TRS wasnt given his due credit for his greatness.. but now, i am happy you have a discussion dedicated to him.. I believe its music lover's illuck not to see him amongst the recognized class of great carnatic musicians from the past.
If i put in frankly, nobody matches his calibre, class, dedication, perfection and willingness to experiment with non-challance at the same time, not losing a tad in keeping the bhaavam at its peak.
Sri TNS is the only other person i can think of, who has no limits to his imagination and experimentation.. No wonder, "Sangeetha Kalanidhi" title found the rightful owner in him.
BTW, i wish to have as much collection of Sri. TRS as possible... The download links posted on this site aren't working. Can somebody get it up.. if possible. Thanks so much..

Here is writeup on Shri TRS from Columbus Carnatic Music Association website:
:: Prof.T.R.Subramanyan
T. R. Subramanyam, or TRS as he is more popularly known amongst most music loving rasikas is a vidwan with uncommon traits. He is unconventional in the sense, that he is a daredevil willing to explore new avenues, regardless of whether his new ideas are accepted or not. He may not start his concert with a traditional varnam or a kriti on Ganesha. On one occasion, the opening item of his concert was a javali in Kapi ragam!
TRS is scholarly and original in his approach to learning new kritis. Though TRS is a multilinguist, until he is confident of the meaning of song- whether the kriti is in Telugu, Kannada, Sanskrit or Tamil, he will not attempt to sing it. Before presenting a new kriti at a concert he pays particular attention to learn the correct words of the sahitya and the correct pronunciation of each word. When TRS renders a kriti, each sangati is rendered with clarity allowing the listener to pick up the words of the song.
In his swaraprastharas, he uses swarams intelligently- he is skillful on the use of swaraksharams. If for instance, he is attempting swara prastharas for a sahitya like - Paramapavana - he will use swarams such as Pa, Ri and Ma to correspond with the sahitya.
TRS as a teacher is unmatched for his enormous patience and understanding. He quickly becomes aware of the limitations of each of his students. He modifies his teaching technique to each individual student in such a way that the student is easily able to comprehend the nuances of the raga bhavam and develop an understanding of the different sangatis in a particular sahityam. I have witnessed TRS encouraging his pupils with his everpresent smile and going through the sahityam with the student several times till the student completely grasps it and is comfortable singing the sahityam.
It is not unusual for TRS to have younger artistes with limited concert exposure to accompany him during his concerts. The ragam-tanam-pallavi is TRS's forte. He is likely to pick a rare raga like Hemavati with an uncommon tala and an unusual eduppu. He has mastery over 'kanakku', (rhythmic arithmetical calculations). Junior artistes enjoy accompanying TRS because he is never one to embarrass them, if for instance the accompanying artistes do not get a particular piece right the first time, he will skillfully assist them.
TRS's lecture demonstrations on rendering pallavis are widely appreciated by both rasikas and students of music. They are so popular that they attract sizeable audience. TRS's skill in rendering the ragam-tanam-pallavi is unrivaled.
TRS is a disciple of Musiri Subramania Iyer. Prior to learning from Musiri, he learnt music from other teachers. He has formally graduated from the University with college degrees. TRS has expressed his fascination for GNB's music and talks glowingly about GNB's skill as a musician.
TRS has also composed some varnams, kritis and tillanas. He occasionally renders his compositions in concerts. He has also tuned some Purandaradasa kritis. TRS has a wide repertoire of songs which he sings in concerts, many of which include compositions of modern composers.
TRS retired a few years ago from the University of Delhi, where he was a Professor in the Department of Music. He is highly respected by all his former students for his knowledge, skill as a concert artiste, his patience as a teacher and his charming demeanor. Anyone who has had the privilege of interacting with TRS will agree on this count.

I remember TRS sir starting a concert at SV Temple Pittsburgh in the early 90's with Smara janaka shubha charita. Brilliantly done, and an unusual start to what was a memorable kutcheri.
He spent couple of summers at SV temple and many of us had the great opportunity to interact with him. I was lucky enough to drive him & party to Washington DC and back for a kutcheri there. I was playing GNB in the car and when he started an Abhogi alapanam, TRS sir was in raptures. He pointed out to us some of the finer points of GNB's singing right in the car.
I even gave him a back massage when we reached DC, because he had a severe backache (hopefully not caused by my driving!). I consider myself lucky indeed to have known such a great artiste and human being.

As a former student of TRS ( i have since, regrettably, ceased to be an active musician) I was just thrilled to discover a forum where his fans could share their admiration for the man. His music speaks for itself- in terms of the phenomenal combination of rigour, beauty and innovation. But as a human being as well, in my mind he shines as a wonderfully warm person with genuine affection for his students. I will never forget the long sundays I would spend in his home in Delhi starting at 10.00 am and extending to 5.00 pm. A stream of students and fans would come in... with requests for learning different kinds of songs, and TRS would simply ask me to join in and sing with all of them. I learnt as much about music from him, as about how to be a teacher ( my profession now). I also want to mention his wife (Kanakam mami I called her)- an extraordinary person in her own right. She was undoubtedly TRS's first fan! I have to think this man's sucess was truly built on the foundation of her support and sacrifice ( she was a good musican herself, and also had a career at some stage in district administration if I remember right).
Thanks for an opportunity to share my deep admiration for a genius among teachers and performers, as well as an extraordinary human being. I look forward to reading thisforum regulalry.

Dear Coolkarni ji,
thanks for uploading that beautiful bhairavi. It is part of a 1972 concert with VVS and Kamalakar- the kalyani pallavi in that concert in particular is superb.- styled in a decreasing adi tala pattern "vaibhave, vinave , shive, ve`||game, brovave" Do post that at some time as well if you get a chance..it is very likely something TRS came up with on the spur of the moment, as there are some "rough" patches in the trikalam... but then that is the hallmark of spontaneous innovation!
Could someone also tell me a) how to post mp3 files to this forum and b) convert tape to mp3. I am a complete novice with these technologies..

This is the kalyani pallavi I was speaking about. In fact I only had a taped version for the last 15 years, and was recently given a gift of this and other mp3's by a good friend who I believe is also a contributor to this forum- Jackie. I am goint to check on what the copyright etiquette is aboutposting before I post again. In the meantime, ring in the new year with a scintillating pallavi.

Hello all!!!
Does anyone have a recording of TRS's rendition of the Kalyani Magnum opus "Enduko nee daya" of Tyagaraja? I don't know if its available...but i think it might well be..bcos...a few years ago, after a judging an event for YACM, TRS mama was in full flow and was discussing a lot of intricate neraval and pallavi patterns with us...at that time, he sang a couple of minutes of neraval in the charanam line of the kalyani keerthanai..the line goes as "Raga rahitha shree Rama - Paraku seyuta nyayama"..the beauty is that the first phase..i.e "Raga rahitha shree rama" would last for first six aksharams of adhi thalam rendu kalai chavukkam (from samam)..then "paraku seyuta nyayama" will begin...its set in such a way that the word paraku is set between laghu and drutham...so essentially the syllabal pa will be in the laghu and the next syllabal ra will fall on half samam....The genius of TRS mama comes into play here...he sang neraval in chathusra nadai keezh kalam for the first half of the avarthanam and the second half in thisra nadai keezh kalam....and then he went on the chathusra madhyama kalam and thisra madhyama kaalam...it was a treat to listen to it..I hope i haven't confused with my explanation....so with hungry ears and mind, I am just trying to get lucky to see if he has sung it in some concert or was it just a spontaneous idea that he displayed and forgot.....Thanks in advance...

he has sung it in a 1982 concert... the whole concert is available as one track. will upload it sometime today... i know its against the "rule" of no full concerts... but maybe just this once since its a brilliant concert!
have no words to describe the beauty of reetigowla, pantuvarali, khamas, kapi, dhenuka, kalyani, surati, yamuna kalyani and the thillana in this concert... phew!!
