Here is saharada bhujanjam rendered as a raga malikai by Vijay siva
http://www.sangeethapriya.org/~tvg/76.S ... 1.50MB.mp3

He belts it out very fast and one fails to appreciate either the raga or the sahityam. By contrast what DRS has done shows off the kriti as a nice concert-worthy piece. Incidentally I got the following ragas
Navarasakanada, nattakurinji, madhyamavati, kiravani, sama and charukesi. Will one of you complete the ragas that I have missed?

Suji
Nice work! Now try the rest as well at your leisure!

Sudarshan,As you rightly said there are many issues in Adi sankara's period. But it is intriguing that when threemutts credit him before christ and one mutt credits him after Christ and yet the four mutts claim to be the only mutts to have been established by Adi sankara. There is something more than what meets the eye. Also the aamnaya theory is questionable because the Dasanami sanyasis go to Chardhams where the mutts are to be situated.Whereas three mutts are in the same places, how come southern mutt is not in Rameshvaram which is the southern Dham.

I humbly request that we limit the discussions in this forum to matters related to music only. On other matters such as those relating mutts etc. the members may do it off line one to one.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Great Sriram!

I am stuck on bEgada :(

Also the fast-paced ending swaras of all ciTTaswarams are challenging to play on violin

Will post mine when I find time to record.

Here is the 'computer rendering' of your bhowli as a MIDI file (with some hiccoughs obviously)

I just could not resist :)

Thanks Suji. I find the ciTTaswarams tough as well. Please do post the recording whenever you can.

CML, thanks for your encouragement. The MIDI is good. Didn't know this could be done.

Special thanks to DRS for setting the bhujangam to tune so beautifully and apologies if I have commmited any mistakes during my recordings.

The quickdump site seems to be down so I have uplodaded all the verses in rapidshare for anyone who might be interested

All verses

madhyamAvati

The toughest part for me is to render these all together and I do not think I will be able to do that now but I guess with more practice and better grip I will attempt that at a later point :)

Overall very well done and congrats. 2 points to be corrected. It is ajasram madambAm which you have consistently sung as ajaSram. The other is in the vilOma swaras. You have got the RShabha wrong in nATa. You have sung R2 in place of R3. That apart, really well done.

Thanks MNS
a very fitting conclusion! I love the whole rendering. The viloma svarams flows smooth showing the raga bhava, though I don't have the expertise or 'hearing' to detect the RShbha substitution that DRS has detected!

Now I do request DRS to set to music a number of other 'shlokas' that are used commonly in deity worship. And I would love to hear them rendered in your weighty golden voice. Of course no need to hurry. The bonus is the beautiful interpretation of the shloka by DRS as well as the informative discussions that ensued. This has made this Navaratri particularly memorable.

Thanks to one and all of you!

Dear DRS, did I sing it wrong in both the places, "P M G M R ," and "S N~ R ," or only in "S N~ R ,"?

Is this correct?

The R in both the places was wrong. And it still is. You are singing it like pUrNacandrike. R3 is to be sung in the position of G2 (as in SuddhadhanyAsi).

DRS

I was amazed at your shruti sensitivity. Hence I did a Fourier analysis on MNS's original Ri and found that it was indeed R2. But now he revised himself and you said he is now right meaning it is R3. As a 'true' scientist (since my hearing is poor) I analyzed it. To my surprise the second version is indeed R1. This is an issue of 'objective' vs 'subjective' :)
Here are both the Ri's the first as well as the second in that order.

:) CML. I think I can see why the Fourier analysis was flummoxed. R3 is sung beginning from S and so the initial part would have come sounding like R1. A fleeting moment but thats what the "analysis" has caught on to.

DRS
that makes good sense! CM is analog and not digital! Hence the svaram depends on where you catch them. Also I noticed that MNS has slightly varied his AdhAra shruti (lowered his fundamenatal) in the second rendering !

A better way to put it, IMO is CM is continuous and not discrete. :)

By the way, the reason R1 employed in sAveri, gowLa R1 sounds lower than "R1" in other ragas is because of similar reasoning, it is taken from S as in S-R1. I vaguely remember that psycho-acoustic research indicates that in some situations humans perceive an average pitch and thus average of the pitch-curve from S-R1 would be lesser than a flat R1.
