Re: need meaning for varman-Om Enna Pranavam
S. Hegde,
In these competitions, because of time constraints, the entire varNam is not presented. This one is lacking one or two more caraNa svara sAhitya passages.
pallavi
Om enra praNavam uruvam koNDavaLE brahmANDa nAyakiyE
Oh dEvi, who takes (koNDavaLE) the form (uruvam) of the primordial sound (praNavam), Om (Om enra)! The mistress (nAyakiyE) of the entire creation (brahmANDa)!
anupallavi
pittanum kavi siddarAi viLanga nal varam seida mA kALiyE
nIlakaNTharin mEniyil marainda nIlavENiyE niyE tuNai
Oh mighty (mA) kAli (kALiyE), who granted (seida) the wonderful (nal) boon (varam) that allowed a mad-man/dunce (pittanum) to shine (viLanga) as an accomplished (siddarAi) poet (kavi) [1]! Oh lady with dark-blue/black (nIla) haie (vENiyE) who disappeared (marainda) in the body (mEniyil) of Siva (nIlakaNTharin), you alone (nIyE) are my succor/companion/refuge (tuNai).
muktAyi svara sAhityam
madagajamE malayadhvaja pANDiyan mAtavamE kuNDalattai
tingaLAi kATTiyE bhaktanai ALa vanda annaiyE Adi shaktiyE
A proud (mada) elephant (gajamE), the fruit of the austere (mA) penance (tavam) undertaken by the pANDyan king (pANDiyan), malayadvaja [2], oh mother (annaiyE) who came (vanda) to admit your devotee (bhaktanai) into your grace (ALa) by showing (kATTiyE) your earring (kuNDalattai) as the full moon (tingaLAi) [3], you are the supreme (Adi) power (SaktiyE)!
caraNam
matiyaNI shUliniyE mA purameritta mahA kALiyE
Oh wielder of the trident (SUliniyE), who wears (aNi) the moon (madi/mati), you are the mighty (mA) kAli (kALiyE) who destroyed/burned (eritta) the big (mA) city (puram) of cidambaram [4].
caraNa svara sAhityam 1
yAvum taravum unnai migamigavum teDiDum tAyE (madiyaNi…)
Oh mother (tAyE) you (unnai) are sought (tEDiDum) relentlessly by one and all (migamigavum) so that you can grant (taravum) anything (yAvum) that is wanted (Oh wielder of the trident who wears the moon, you are the mighty kAli who destroyed cidambaram).
caraNa svara sAhityam 2
bhaNDanum caNDamuNDanum koDum daNDanai seida dAkSAyaNiyE
Oh daughter of daksha (dAkshAyiniyE), who meted out (Seida) the severest (koDum) punishments (daNDanai) to the demons bhanDAsura and (bhaNDanum) the brothers, caNDa and muNDa (canDAmuNDanum) (Oh wielder of the trident who wears the moon, you are the mighty kAli who destroyed cidambaram).
FOOTNOTES
These are all opportunities for sancAris
[1] Refers to the story of how kALidAsa a dunce who was married to haughty princess vidyOttama, was stung by her derision and appeals to kAli to make him a scholar – and how, with the blessings of kAli mA, he becomes one of the nine gems in the court of king vikramAditya
[2] Refers to the 'birth' of mInAkshi
[3] Refers to the story of abhirAma bhaTTar (the composer of abhirAmi andAdi), who, lost in a trance about the dEvi, mistakenly tells the king that it will be a full moon that night (when it actually was amAvAsya); when the king threatens to behead bhaTTar if the court is not able to see the full moon, abhirAmi uses her tATaNkam – earring, to simulate the moon – this is part of the sthala purANam of the amRtaghaTESar samEta abhirAmi temple in tirukkaDaiyUr (the place where mArkaNDEyan was saved)
[4] Refers to the story of the ugra kALi who went on a rampage after subduing demons, and was hell bent on destruction, and how Siva stops her by lying in her path, and when she strikes him with her foot, she comes to a standstill and the destruction she wreaks is stopped
