Re: An article on Arangetram

Even though she mentions Colombo, I think that she misses out the importance of the fact that the Sri-Lankan community is not a Diaspora of choice, but arises from the plight and flight of refugees. So far as London and UK is concerned, it is this community that, by majority, she is writing about.

Ten years on from the article date. Any change? Have chief guests yet learned not to remind the young dancer that the arangetram is only a beginning? The young dancer, who can't help it if, the next day, the parental pressure moves sharply from culture to career!

Ten years on... how many zeros can we add to the almost incredible £30,000? Back then, £10,000 could easily be spent on even a vocal or instrumental arangetram. How much more gold bursts the seams of the leading dance teachers' bank deposit boxes?

Anything changed?

In case I sound critical, I must hasten to add that the London arangetram scene may very well be more party than performance, but, if that's a party, then I wish all parties could be like that. Some of the best 'parties' I ever attended :)! And I still take my hat off to the youngsters for their hard work and performances, even if law or medicine will take their attention the next day.

Arangetrams must have become routine for the senior and head teachers of some of London's best schools, but I cannot forget the reactions of some, attending their first, who were truly astonished and genuinely moved at what they saw from children they regarded as being good at maths and sport. Their reactions were worth a hundred speeches, written the week before, from the chief guests within the music/dance community.
