I read the article about the workshop. I am surprised to read about "kamalAri" in nannu brOcuTaku. I have learnt it as kamalAri myself and have never been able to figure out the meaning. Although kamalAri (enemy of the lotus) is moon. It is heartening to note that my doubts about the word not making sense there are confirmed!

Thanks

tyagarajadasa,

"tOyajAri" is a similar usage present in the bhairavi koluvai unnADE.

@ srikanth:

Thanks, I am aware of this!

But kamalAri nI vAda unfortunately makes no sense in the context of the line in the kriti "nannu brOcuTaku". "kAmAkshi nI vAdA" does! Will confirm with some other vidvans about this and get back on this soon!

Similar to Lord Siva, Goddess Kamakshi is depicted with a crescent moon. http://www.google.co.in/search?q=kamaks ... 74&bih=542 I assume there is iconographic evidence to support this. Her smile is compared to that of a white lotus in bloom and the devout aspire to attain Her lotus feet.

The moon is thought of as an enemy to the lotus in this context because petals of the flower close at moon-rise and re-open only at sunrise.

Tyagaraja has used similar poetic imagery – “toyajari” (anupallavi of kolvaiyunnade as pointed out by srikant) and “kuśēśayāri” (charanam-1 of deva sri tapastheertha pura nivasa)

Thus “shramamellanu dirchutakidi manci samayamma kamalari nee pada” in Subbaraya Sastri’s nannu brochutaku may be valid.

Thanks knandago!

For long I myself assumed that the reference was iconographic like you mentioned (I am only now noticing the crescent moon on ambAL! I assumed that kamalari referred to "one whose face is bright like the moon" like it appears in many kritis of the trinity).
