No question is stupid as long as we are enthusiastic about learning this divine art in the right method! :) Im assuming you are asking about the first few movements done in the alarippu.. if so , It is both pulling in & pushing out the shoulder in the Natyarambam position. It is a minor pulling in of the shoulder & push out ( Typically we say the rhythmic syllable 'thai hi thath thai hi ' in most alarippu recital for this movement . For the first 'thai hi' - you pull in ( for the syllable 'thai')and push out(for the syllable 'hi') the shoulder and a pause for the 'thath' , we dont move the hand and for the second 'thai hi 'we repeat the movement. But I guess different styles may have different methods in doing this particular movement depending on the solkattu / variations in the different thaalams the alarippu can be done. For visually seeing the move please see the Alarippu done by the dancer Priyadasrini govnd it does differ from what I have described here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1W2HHMwwvc but you will get an idea.
