tharangam dance

Post by bharatanatyamrasika »

I would like to know more about tharangam -the dance on the brass plate by kuchipudi dancers ? is it always a krishna song? are there composers who specialise/ed in this kind of song? thank you.

Usually tarangam is performed to verses from the Krishna Leela Tarangini composed by Narayana Teertha.

I have seen tharangam praising lord Shiva. But dont remember it to mention here. Recently, Annammacharya krithis like Ammamma Emamma, Muddugare Yeshoda, Ittu Muthuladi ... etc are also used in Kuchipudi. Some of them are praising Lord Venkatesha and Alamel Manga ... :)

thank you. i did see the shiva shiva bhava bhava tarangam on kuchipudi tarangam post. so it appears that even tho tharangams started out as narayana theertha's krishna leela tharangams, now other songs are being choreographed as tharangams. so i guess are tharangams now synonymous with plate dance - a technique rather than a particular type of composition on krishna?

Yes .... there are tharangams without thaalam (Plate) too. Still, i haven't seen any, praising other gods like Muruka and Devi.
