Kauthuvams

Post by nthek »

Hi -

Do you know the composer of the natesha kauthuvam and the subramanya kauthuvam? I have seen that some people have been saying that it is the Tanjore Quartet. What is the source?

I am performing a Kauthuvam and would like to cite the correct composer.

Thanks!
Nadhi

They were composed by Gangamuthu nattuvanar i think, the grand father of the Tanjore quartet.. Not very sure..

i learned that Gangamuthu nattuvanar composed all the kauthuvams. He was the grandfather of the Tanjore Quartett. He lived during the reign of Mahratta king Tulajaji II. Gangamuthu nattuvanar also composed the navasandhi-,natesha- and panchamurthi kauthuvams.

According to this document, the nataraja kavuthuvam (which im not sure is the same as the natesa kavuthuvam tht we dance today) is in varali ragam and sarva laghu. The one we do these days is in hamsadhwani and aadhi thaalam. Similarly subramanya kavuthuvam today is performed to shanmuga priya and not Goulai.!! That is the reason i wasn't very sure. May be the lyrics are the same and just the tunes were changed! I'll be glad if someone gives a more concrete reply!
