Anyone know the story of Vishnu saving wives of saptharishis

Post by ganeshpv »

Hello Rasikas,

Does anyone know the story of Vishnu (or one of his ten avataras) saving wives of Saptha Rishis?

Thanks,
Ganesh.

Ganesh , I remember an incident in Bhagavatam, 10th Skandham of how Krishna goes to some Rishis living near Brindavan (asking for something) but they refuse to entertain him, but their wives realise who he really is, and go out of their way to help him. Sorry I don;t remember more specific details.

There is the famous story of Siva seducing the Rishi patnis and their casting abhichaaram (with snakes, tiger, fire etc.,) all oof which adorned him. Again in thiruviLayaDal Sundareshvarar seducing women as 'vaLayal cheTTy' is also there. I will scour my memory to find the story of vishnu saving the Rishi patnis....

There is a reference in Annamaiah kriti ‘eTTu nErchiti vayya inni vAhanamu lekka’:-

C 1
garuDuni meeda nekki gamaninchitivi nADu
arudaina pArijAta haraNa NaDu
garima to ratha mekki kadaliti valla nADu
soradi brAhmaNa paDuchula nuddharinchanu ||
You flew sitting on Garuda bird to bring the rare Parijata tree.
You mounted chariot to save the Brahmana women (wives of sapta rishis).

Extract from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrikas

"In Matsya Purana, Shiva had created seven Matrikas to combat the demon Andhaka, who had the ability to duplicate from each drop of his blood that falls from him when he is wounded.[c] The Matrikas drink up his blood and help Shiva defeat the demon. After the battle, the Matrikas begin a rampage of destruction by starting to devour other gods, demons and peoples of the world. Narasimha, Vishnu's man-lion incarnation, creates a host of thirty-two benign goddesses who calm down the terrible, fire-breathing Matrikas."

There is a story in the bhAgavata, about how Krishna and balarAma asked their cowherd friends to go and request food from some brahmins performing yagnas. They were rudely refused, by the brahmins who were proud about their karma-kANDA accomplishments.

Then Krishna asks his friends to request the brahmins' wives, the yagnapatnis, to give them food. The wives, who were devout, went along with the gopas and gave food to Krishna.

The wives were apprehensive about returning to their husbands, and asked Krishna to not send them back. Krishna assured them and sent them, the husbands received them, and were contrite, and even recognised Krishna as god.

This is the Chapter keerti is talking about. But it does not pertain to the wives of the sapta rishis.
More research is to be done on ganeshpv's question. :)

Thanks guys.

None of the stories that you guys suggested fit. I know Krishna rode a chariot to kill Narakasura and free the 16,000 maidens that were locked up. But these were not brahmaN girls, they were daughters of kshathriya kings. Krishna also rode a chariot to rescue Rukmini from an unwanted marriage, but Rukmini is not a brahmiN girl either.
