Kalyani Ganesan – Veena
Tanjore Kumar – Mrudangam
Duration: 1h 40min
Elaborate Items:
vanajAkSi (varNam) – kalyANi – khaNDa aTa
vENugAna lOluni (R, S) – kEdAragowLa – rUpakam
sESAcala nAyakam (R, S) – varALi – rUpakam
O rangasAyI (R, tAnam, S, T) – kAmbOji – Adi
This vainika came highly recommended from fellow rasikas, and she started her concert to an abysmal audience of about ten with a slow and careful rendition of the kalyANi aTa tALa varNam. It was nice to hear the varNam played so elaborately. The kEdAragowLa was easily the highlight of the concert. Her alapanai was concise, but her rendition of the krithi was really outstanding and moving – it was played with utmost bhAvam. Her varALi alapanai was crisp, and I was pleased to hear sESAcala nAyakam. Some madhyama kAla swaras decorated the krithi. The kAmbOji was uniformly good. The tukkadas included Arabhi mAnam and karpagamE.
I enjoyed KG’s playing. She is very careful in her use of gamakas, and has a gentle manner of playing the vINai which is very pleasant. She also punctuates her music with a lot of pauses, and these pauses allow swaras like the rishabam in even a simple kEdAragowLa phrase like MGR,,, to linger and decay organically. It was very charming. Her kAlapramANam throughout the concert was eerily accurate and even. I was very disappointed the concert concluded in such a short time. I wish she’d played neravals, too.
Tanjore Kumar was very sensitive on the mrudangam. His embellishment of krithis was highly impressive and he had great clarity as well. I don’t seem to have heard much from or even of him, but I am told he’s a favourite of many vainikas. Indeed, his playing was a highlight in krithis like O rangasAyI.
Earlier, I caught an hour of Aishwarya Vidya Raghunath’s concert. She sang kaligiyunTE as main. She has a nice, deep voice and I thought she sang well. Her kIravANi was classical and felt very complete. I especially enjoyed R Rahul’s accompaniment on the violin – his kIravANi was excellent. He adheres very well to the MC school. Aishwarya concluded her concert with a sedate and moving rendition of ninnu jUchi in punnAgavarALi. I was impressed by what little I heard. Akshay Anandapadmanabha was on the mrudangam and played decently.

Thanks for the review, bilahari.
Good that you got to hear Raghul and Aishwarya too. I will try to listen to Aishwarya some time.

It is sad that so few attended this concert. And that this review too has received such less attention is depressing.

The concert was pure and pristine. I liked kalyani mamis neat presentation of kamboji raga and thanam which were replete with bhavam, as bilahari said She is very careful in her use of gamakas, and has a gentle manner of playing the vINai,.
