Thank you for posting this Meena. When they say "different abilities" waht do they mean? Is that a euphemism for "challenged" or does it simply mean "variety across the normal spectrum". I read the article and could not decide one way or another.

Meena - thank you for the info.

The Hindu article concludes with: "They will be presenting the results of their studies at Natana Kairali later this month." It would be of interest to learn about their results. Radhakrishnan, would you have access to this?

Jayaram, hope you know about natana kairali and it’s activities ;it is an institution run by G.Venu at Irinjalakuda for the promotion of classical art forms ,mainly Koodiyattom. There used to be regular work shops once or twice an year. There was such a work shop last July and both Ludwig and Emanuel were here.Shall contact natana kairali and check if they are there.

Radhakrishnan -

I have only heard about Natana Kairali, don't know much about their activities. I look forward to any information you can gather from them about this piece of research.

You mentioned Koodiyattom - the famed film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan has made a 3-hour documentary on Koodiyattom. He was recently in London for a film retrospective workshop and I got the opportunity to speak to him about this. Only wish I could get to watch the film. Do you have access to this also, being in Kerala?

Ludwig wrote to me, and I quote here for everyone's benifit and information:

I am just back from a long stay in India which before which I participated in the international music education conference ISME 2006 at Kuala Lumpur. For a glimpse of my ISME workshop session, please see http://www.sam.mimemo.net/ISME_slideshow.html

In response to a number of inquiries, I have just provided the following information which may also be of interest to you and your circle of fellow music lovers in and outside India:

The course titled "Music of South India" is designed to be self-paced and covers a great diversity of subjects including all the major areas of Carnatic music. Dependent on a participant's individual situation, available time and special interests, he or she can explore some areas in greater depth than others without disturbance to or from other participants with different interests or levels of musical experience.

Participation in this not-for-profit course can be extended for those who don't find the time to complete all assignments within the tree months period from October. Some earlier participants have continued to enroll several times out of personal interest rather than ambition with all freedom to participate in discussions whenever they wish.

I also welcome contributions from guests with limited time to actively participate right now as professional server costs are on the high side and considering that Indian participants only give a voluntary contribution to an Indian educational fund (see also http://www.carnaticstudent.org/course/e ... dians.html).

Cooperation and exchange of ideas and experiences are the keys to an enjoyable and fruitful way of participating, be it among participants themselves, with your course tutor (myself) and some of the many Indian contributors and experts in and outside India.

The course library is accessible in the form of a CD-Rom as broadband internet access is not available to all participants all the time. All the rest is done via the browser while privacy is assured by the way the course system works (internal messaging for the forum responses to your discussion postings or those by others to which you subscribe).
