mohana, probably is the most popular raga, not only in carntic, the hindustani version is there(notes are the same, application is different)
theoritically,it is considered as the janya of 28th Harikamboji.Though it can technically be janya of many other ragas, according to TRS,the reason is the dhaivatha is close to kasiaki nishada,so janya of H.Kamboji.Anyway,this is dry thoery, music is something to be enjoyed by hearing.
more theory though
it is an oudava raga(having 5 notes in aro and ava) swaras are s,r2,g2,p,d2
to complicate things further by theory,if you do shruti bheda with this raga, taking r,g,p,d as adhara shruthi, you will get madhaymavathi, hindolam, sudhasaveri and sudha dhanyasi respectively!!
and there are plenty of songs composed by most composers and all music directors have used this raga extensively in film songs.

My *favorite* ragam of ALL times.
I *think* it was Coolkarni sir who uploaded a Emani-MSG concert where there is astaouding Rama Ninnu Nammina with MSG playing some sparkling swaras in the end.
Other memorable Mohanam's I've heard
- MDR's sublime Nannu Palimpa with a slowly built up raga, it's like him teaching. Similarly when he sings Bhavayami Raguramam he sings the Mohanam bit with relish.
- GNB's Academy concert with Sri Rama Ramani. That's the only Mohanam I've heard from him.
- MMI's ever popular Kapali. Who can forget that? And his Ramanai Kannara kandene.
- DKP's ragamalika slokam, Petra Thaithanai Maga Marandhalum. A sublime one that only DKP can sing, beautiful.
- DKJ singing Dikshitar's Kadambari Priyayi [a personal favorite as I grew up in Madurai!]
- Ramani mama's quick fire Bhavanutha with swarams
- Lalgudi's epic Mohanam / Ranjani pallavi.
- The *best* - Maharajapuram Santhanam elaborating with Lalgudi's response and a Mohana Rama to follow.
Of all tghe movie songs, there is one called Pazhaga Theriya Venum Penne which is classic Mohanam, simple and absolutely beautiful.

i guess the more appropriate way of putting it is "neither of the singers render this frequently"...atleast not as frequently as they sing reethigowla, bhairavi, varali, kharaharapriya, kamboji, thodi, purvikalyani. TMK goes further than ssi a wee bit in the sense that he renders sahana(Giripai, Rama Ika Nannu), kaapi (Intha Sowkya) and hindolam (Neerajakshi) more frequently...SSI's preferred hindolam was Maa Ramanan, not as often tho.

very rarely taken up as an RTP.i can count thr rtps that i have come across on my fingers, in 25-30 years of listening.
Wonder why.
many years ago I heard a MMI Mohana alapana from a concert called the Griffith Road concert at a contacts place.(Unforunately I cannot follow that lead now to see if I can acquire it)
As he reaches the higher notes in the alapana , the sounds from a railway steam engine is heard .
and after it passes the concert venue it makes a wonderful hooting sound.
MMI who is now singing His Oooooooooo, pauses to let it pass and as the sounds from the train slowly disappear into the night , MMI picks it up again, slightly mimicking that sound since they are of the same pitch.
a round of laughter follows and he continues.
So many years down the road that experience is etched in my memory.
Wonder if any one has the concert.

in a commecial release of an academy concert , TVS has sung one of the best mohanams(the avn album with geetha vadya of sankara iyer as a major piece)
the violin accompaniment (nagai mur or vvs i am not sure) is one of my all time favourites .
here is repeat posting of somus mohana with msg -for newcomers

I have a recording of MMI Mohanam RTP, with the train. I will confirm it !! The accompanists are LGJ and PMI.MMI who is now singing His Oooooooooo, pauses to let it pass and as the sounds from the train slowly disappear into the night , MMI picks it up again, slightly mimicking that sound since they are of the same pitch.
Also, in the same RTP MMI wont sing his usual mohanam swaras instead skips it .... But LGJ when answering, plays those exactly in the style that MMI would have sung and collects a round of applause.

koolkarni sahab,
Sorry for replying this late ...
R U sure the RTP you are talking with a train ? I have one concert where I hear constant hooting of the train engine !! But in the mohana rtp there were none !! This concert has a v good Saranga and Vasantha as well !!
I will listen to the whole concert and see whether any other section of the concert has this incident that you are mentioning. Also I have one more mohanam RTP with Shri. Chowdiah, I will see that too !!
Regards, SR

let me you give you a clearer picture of the conditions in which I heard these concerts.
A nice Iyengar gentleman in West Mambalam had taken a great liking for the fact that I ( a non tamilian) loved CM so much.
With the result that he would allow me to sit in his drawing room on Sunday afternoons when he would be having his siesta and listen to a concert (these were done on Sundays , because he was a busy chartered accountant)
These sessions had their moments of terror for me , too.
For I had to drink hot coffee from a silver cup without touching my lips you see (for fear of being banished the next time):)
These developed later into recording sessions , but Yes this concert I am referring to is only from memory. So many things were happening to me simultaneously then .After so many years I cannot say I am sure.

Just now listening to this rendition of mOhana - This has shuddha kalyAN written all over itcoolkarni wrote:in a commecial release of an academy concert , TVS has sung one of the best mohanams(the avn album with geetha vadya of sankara iyer as a major piece)

I was thinking that this was a characteristic of mahArAjapuram school only - I think I was very much mistaken!
Was Somu influenced by MVI ?
OTOH, venkatamakhi may have foreseen this and classified mOhana under shAMta kalyANi ...

Looks like the answer is yes , if you hear the comparative tracks .

( a lovely 70 sec track i have preserved for decades , just for this effect !!)

at 3.07 , we can catch him saying just this - "Just like Iyervaal ..."

Oh Somu is defo referring to MVI I think. No one in that era even came close to producing Mohanam like the mastero from Maharajapuram.
Slightly OT ...
I once heard a Mohanam by SSI [the old mama refused to give me a copy of the concert
], IIRC, it was TNK on the violin and PMI on the mridangam. I dont have the knowledge to post the sangathis, but Maharajapuram school has a distinct way of ending the raga sketch. SSI doesn't on this occasion, but TNK does a polished finish including the Maharajapuram trade mark finish. SSI says bale bale, and then to the audience I suppose, you should have heard my guru singing Mohanam, it was the best ever. It was like lightning [minnal madhiri], you can only see it but you can't capture it [meaning can't be reproduced]. Then goes on to sing Bhavanutha ... and PMI to his eternal credit plays the entire song on the mridangam, which was treat to hear. Hmm, thinkign about I've only heard SSI singing two songs in Mohanam, Bhavanutha and Dikshitar's Narashima Aagacha. Once a pallavi, any one have any other renderings by SSI?
I've heard Mohanam from many a person, I don't think I've heard a better one than what is sung by the Maharajapuram school. Santhanam accompanied by Lalgudi weaving magic was what made to start listening to carnatic music. It's still my favorite raga.

Mahesh,
"any one have any other renderings by SSI?"
Gopika Manoharam in Mohanam apparently has also been sung by SSI. I have posed this same question earlier in this same thread....Apparently, we have more in common than just our names.
Can anybody post a Mohanam rendered in a detailed manner by MVI?

mahesh.. Semmangudi can get delightful with this krithi, indeed.
talking of RTP's I see that Mohana is not a favourite choice for RTP's.
Wonder why ?Some technical reason maybe
In decades , I have heard only MVI , MLV and Somu sing this RTP..

I am making a calculated speculation of why SSI did not choose mOhanam as a main or RTP .
Since the raga mOhanam is more chiseled (partly because it does not have ma and ni) and since semmangudi's bAni was more gamAkam oriented, did Shri Semmangudi chose not to sing mOhanam
Or
May be did Semmangudi chose not to sing mOhanam as his main contemporary MMI was a king of mOhanam, that he left it to him.

To add, GNB hasn't sung this raga much either. His Sree Rama Ramani in the Academy concert with Chowdiah and Palani is the only time I've heard the master sing this raga elaborately. Slightly off topic, but Palani's play is simply breathtaking. The RTP singers in the raga so far are ..
MVI [he has to be *the* first in the list!!]
MMI
MDR
TKR
MLV
MSS [Yes I found a concert in one of me forgotten music lists though I can't find the CD
]
TVS
Bizarre, I've heard *plenty* of concerts by Santhanam and plenty of Mohanam's by him but no RTP.

Arasi,
Sanjay sang a RTP in Bhimpalas (thats what I thought) K'Devagandhari is this abheri ?Not sure if its the same concert we are talking ? (Aurora Temple) It is very hard for me to differentiate Abheri and Bhimpalas sometimes.
Coming back, I guess it was a couple of years back he sang mohanam varnam (ninnu kori) and Mohanam RTP in that concert and I think he sang H'khamboji as the main piece and I dont remember the song.
