Insensitivity of AIR and Podhigai.

Post by CRama »

AIR, Chennai is doing really good service for the cause of carnatic music through its AM and FM channels. Its musical programmes for Navarathri which are relayed as NAVAMANIMALAI at 9.00 AM and the concert in FM in the evening are really appropriate for the occasion.
On Sunday 10 Oct, it was Madurai TNS concert in the Navamani malai series. He gave good explanation relating to the songs he rendered- Saraseeruhasanapriye, O jagadamba, Rajarajarajidhe,Mamava Meenakshi and Sree Kamalambikaya(Sankarabharanam), the third navavarana song. After the main song was finished, it was abruplty stopped without neraval, swaras and thani. It was only 09.46 A.M at that time. The concert should have gone upto 10.00 A.M. It was clear butchering. This is another example of truncating carnatic music programmes to accommodate other programmes. I did not wait to see what was the next programme.
As a part of Navarathri, Podhigai Channel is telecasting music concerts from 5.00P.M to 6.00P.M. On the first day it was Mandolin and yesterday, it was P.Unnikrishnan. I was prepared for a concert of great songs on Goddess appropriate for the occasion. But what Unni sang were Vadera deivamu, Sree Venkatagireesam and Dachokorvalena. I wondered whether it was Navarathri concert or Ramanavami concert. Not one single song on Devi to sing for the occasion. Whose insensitivity? Is it Podhigai or Unnikrishnan's? Even in the backdrop, there was one big idol of Ganapthy, nothing of Devi. I got terribly irritated by such nonsensical presentations. But I admit that Unni sang very well without swallowing any word.

Yesterday's Nithyasree Mahadevan's concert had songs on the goddesses, including a rarely heard Syama Sastri's tamil composition in pUrvikalyani (ennEramum). The telecast standard was ordinary. Commercials cutting through krithis and swaras was little painful to hear!.

AIR and Podhigai are obviously doing good service to CM. But there are no limits to their reusing old stuff. Don't be surpised if you have Dr.Balamuralikrishna's concert as a.............................CHILD ARTIST
