Shyama-priya, look for that Dasavatharam sung by Bombay Sisters. The best rendition ever! I think even MSS has a version of it.

Hi, I am sorry, I am certainly not in the good post but I couldn't find one, so I ask you help:
I am looking for a good theory book or website that describes in details the 7 tandavam.
Do you know where I can find that? I already tried to search but I couldn't find anything complete. I also have friends that were in Chennai last month and they asked in book shops but they also could not find anything...I really need help because I have a theory exam on that subject in october...
Thanks a lot!

Characteristics of Tandava Dance
According to scholars, ‘Characteristics of the Tandava Dance’ have been described in the fourth chapter of Bharat Muni’s Nata Shastra, which is referred to as fifth Veda and an expression of Lord Shiva’s eternal dance - Tandava. It says that Shiva’s Tandava is embellished with 108 karanas and the 32 anghaharas - the composite parts of the dance. Bharat Muni further says that Lord Shiva conceived the dance, as he was very much fond of dancing every evening. Shiva further mentioned that 108 karnas included in tandava could be employed in the course of dance, fight, and personal combats and in other special movements like strolling.
Types of Tandava
Some scholars believe that there are seven different types of Tandava. The tandava performed with joy is called Ananda Tandava and that which is performed in violent mood is called Rudra Tandava. The other types of tandava identified are Tripura Tandava, Sandhya Tandava, Samhaara Tandava, Kaali Tandava, Uma Tandava and Gauri Tandava. However, there are few people who believe that there are 16 types of Tandava.
Significance of Shiva's Tandava Nritya
According to religious scholars, the cosmic dance of Shiva, called 'Anandatandava,' meaning, ‘the Dance of Bliss’ symbolizes the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction, as well as the daily rhythm of birth and death. The dance is a pictorial allegory of the five principle manifestations of eternal energy - creation, destruction, preservation, salvation, and illusion.
According to learned scholar, Coomerswamy, the dance of Shiva also represents his five activities namely,
* 'Shrishti' - creation, evolution
* 'Sthiti' - preservation, support
* 'Samhara' - destruction, evolution
* 'Tirobhava' - illusion
* 'Anugraha' - release, emancipation, grace
The overall temper of the image is paradoxical, uniting the inner tranquillity, and outside activity of Shiva.
Lasya
The dance performed by Goddess Parvati is known as Lasya. In Lasya, the movements are gentle, graceful and sometimes erotic. Some scholars call Lasya, the feminine version of Tandava. Lasya is of two kinds - Jarita Lasya and Yauvaka Lasya. According to the Puranas, Shiva dances a wild and vigorous (tandava) dance in the cremation grounds at night but dances a soft and graceful (lasya) dance in the tranquillity of the twilight.

Why is Dance of Gotipuas a folk art while Odissi a dance derived from Gotipua dance (this is what I read; correct me if I am wrong) a classical dance? Hmmmph.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Bharatanatyam , Odissi and Kuchipudi became "classical" only in the 1940s and 1950s. That was largely due to lobbying/promoting by the practioners. If the Gotipuas lobbied Delhi hard enough, they could also be blessed with the "classical" label.Why is Dance of Gotipuas a folk art while Odissi a dance derived from Gotipua dance (this is what I read; correct me if I am wrong) a classical dance? Re: interesting links to watch
I think there is a method to declaring an art form as 'classical' in India - from what I understand, the Sangeet Natak Academy (SNA) is the authority that brands something 'classical' - and to have a dance form labeled classical, the applicants need to show that the grammar of the form is based on the nATyaSAstras (note the plural - I think bharata's, as well as works like abhinaya darapaNa fall under this broad umbrella). For many years, the SNA recognized bharatanATyam, kucipuDi, mOhiniATTam, oDissi, kathakaLi, kathak and maNipuri as the classical dance forms. More recently, chau has been added to this list, and I understand that gauDiya nritya is being evaluated. Please correct me if I have this wrong.
[PS: From what I remember from a very old 'xeroxed' copy of bharata's nATyaSAstra, I think only one chapter, chapter 4, deals with dancing - the rest of the chapters deal with other aspects of dramaturgy - looks like the ancient naTas and naTis who practiced the nATya vEda were singers, dancers, actors, and also knew about stage setup and management - and somewhere along the way, specialization occurred with naTas/naTis specializing in one of the aspects of their stagecraft (like acting, singing, directing, dancing etc) - I do not understand why physicians are blamed for specialization and super specialization, when it was these naTas and naTis who showed us the way!]

The Sattriya dance practised in Vasihnava Sattras (monasteries in Assam) is recognized as one of the eight classical forms of Indian dance. Traditionally and strictly performed as ritual by male initiates this is considered to be purely devotional (bhakti rasa) rather than entertainment.
[eight = kathakali, mohiniyattam, bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, odissi, manipuri, kathak, and sattriya]

In all the images of ANDAL I have seen, and all dancers who put on the koNDai, it is placed on the right; this is the first time I am seeing it on the left - does it have any significance, can it be placed on either side, or is it just a goof-up in this instance?

Andal has the chaya kondai on the right and Meenakshi on the left..
Specific significance I am not aware, perhaps establishing the identity I guess.
Incidentally this may be the reason why Iyengar brides wear the kondai on the right and the Iyers if they do use it on the left on their weddings.

@rshankar: You mean the kondai is always worn on audience's right which is the dancer's left.Rasikaas wrote:Andal has the chaya kondai on the right and Meenakshi on the left..

@ rasikaas: I dont think the kondais on meenakshi and andal are on different sides.
andal

meenakshi
http://www.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en ... =&gs_rfai=
As far as i know, the feminine side has always been the left.(I am not sure why women sit in the right at wedding. maybe thats because its their day ) The sun, moon head jewellery worn by dancers, its made sure the moon is always the left. In ardhanarishwara, parvathy is always on the left. In mohiniattam, the kondai is always worn on the dancers left. So, technically all kondais are worn on the left. I think its just a goof up in other cases.

An old one, Ganesh Chaturthi special - love the very lively dancer's expressions, her grace in every movement, impressive dance and the singer. I feel Ganesha is a difficult one to perform - most mimic his chubbiness and gait in an almost mocking sort of way - here the dancer is exceptional by making it seem so Divine and beautiful with her mudras and abhinaya.

Re: interesting links to watch
S-P - Madhu is indeed a very talented young girl - I had reviewed another performance of hers before. I think the link to Sankara Sri giri in your post is not the right one...The choreography is her mother's - and showcases the pandanallUr style.shyama-priya wrote:A very young multi-talented girl - B/Natyam, Canrnatic Vocal and Hindustani vocal (under senior disciple of Veena Sahasrabuddhe).

rshankar, I have corrected the link for Madhumita Parmar's Shankara Sri Giri in my post above. Thanks for the pointer to the very nice review plus the links to baiyyAn nA dharo and hEy gObind by Madumita - the girl is superb. Such maturity in her tender years!
