Post by madhan »

http://www.purplestream.in/ngs.html

Annual festival of Natyarangam, dance wing of Narada gana sabha, can be seen on live streaming at Indian timings at this site. You need Adobe flash player plug-in in your browser to watch it. Im watching Aishwarya Narayanaswamy now. Very good quality too!

More details on the festival and the schedules can be got at http://sangeethas.wordpress.com/2010/08 ... -3rd-2010/

@ All:

We are also trying to bring in the LIVE Web Cast series of the Katha Kali Festival - "BHAVA BHAVANAM" organised by Kalakshetra from 4th Sep'10 - 8th Sep'10

If we get the permission from the organising committee and from the performing artists, we would bring you another wonderful festival.

You guys did the YACM?

The quality was good, at least for the sound. Curious to know what the audio bit rate was?

And when I say, "at least for the sound" I mean that that is correct priorities: a full-screen video with poor sound would have been so wrong.

Of course, the priorities for dance might be different.

@ Nick H:

Yes, we did the streaming of YACM's 25th anniversary celebrations.

We didn't understand your question, "atleast for the sound", please let us know, in case you had any difficulty or if the quality was not up to the mark, we shall improvise the same. Thanks.

The picture quality was fine for watching in the small window. It was terrible at full-screen.

I'm not complaining, in fact I would not have wanted that much net traffic, and it would have been too much for the modest internet connections that many people have.

I'm saying... you got it right!

We are currently working on the screen size and the format, if all goes well, we might provide multiple bit rates starting from 280p,400p and 720p and the player would automatically stream at the appropriate bit rate based on the internet speed of the viewer. This should re-solve the pathetic full screen quality :-)

We are planning something for the December Music Season, shall keep you posted.

@ BjanKumar:

At present, we have no plans to archive the videos for this event, reason being, we have got permission from the artists and the sabha, ONLY for One-Time LIVE Streaming of the performance.

We value the copyright of the content and ensure we provide the artist with the original tapes of the recording done, immediately after the concert in most cases, if not on the next day. We also provide written undertaking that, we would not use the recording for any commercial purpose. We would prefer to operate in this mode, since, this provides a comfort feeling for the performing artists and helps us start a mutually beneficial relationship..

That's brilliant!

It should be manually selectable, though, for the sake of those with low traffic caps and "fair-use policy" restrictions. I'm sure you know the Indian broadband market better than I do, as the internet is your business.

I find it impossible to be objectively sure about the differences in compression, but I do find that certain internet sources cause certain symptoms of mild stress. Actually, I find this even with speech/drama from the BBC, which can be highly compressed. It doesn't help, in this respect, that my speakers are studio monitors (only M-Audio... entry level) and therefore very unforgiving. I'd better get to the point of this: please keep the music as uncompressed as possible!

The compositions presented are outlined here. Seems very interesting...Would love to know more about the 'tODi varNamAlika' presented by Smt. Valli (is it the navarAgamAlika varNam starting in tODi?), Maha Vaidyanatha- & Ramaswami- and Neelakatha Sivan's compositions chosen, Subbarama Diskshitar's compositions, Tiger Sri Varadachariar's pada varNam, Dandayudapani Pillai's kAmbhOji pada varNam and daSAvatAram kriti, Poochi's and MDR's compositions that were presented.

By the way, what is a SODasha alArippu?

@rshankar

In the past ragamalika varnams were also referred to as "varnamalika's"
this was a todi varnamalika - meaning the ragamalika starts in todi

@madhan

She explained before her performance that her nattuvangam artist is abroad and that she did not have enough time to train another with the items she planned to perform.

The varnam was done with recorded music and the other two items with a live orchestra.

Does anyone know where one can watch the webcast of the Kathakali festival being held at Kalakshetra 4-8th Sep? Is it at the Kalakshetra site itself? Or at Purple Stream site?
