With Kulkarni sa'ab's indulgence, I am reposting a link from the Dance topic, because I was wondering if Lji can provide us with the lyrics and, if Kiran, Sarma et al can translate this lovely piece!

Thanks.

The song is a shabdam by Vadivelu. The book indicates kAmbhOji as the rAgA but in the song kAmbhOji is first and then dhanyAsi is used. The book is in tamil; so there are definitely errors in the text below. My apologies.

Lji,
Thanks for that prompt response...
Now, I am a little confused with the classification as a 'shabdam' given that it is usually a small composition, and not one for ~15 minutes as this one is....

Kiran/Sarma,
Now it is your turn to weave your magic...

There is Kalyani (I think) in between the Kambhoji and Dhanyasi and then Surutti(??).

It's a Shabdam because it juxtaposes sahityam with sollukattus in a very simplistic manner (unlike a varnam). It is 15 minutes here only because the group decided to repeat lines several times (perhaps for abhinaya elaboration in a demonstration?). I can't imagine a 15 minute shabdam actually being performed, with a varnam to follow! If you listen to other contemporary recordings of this same song, you'll find it shorter in length.

sarasijAkSulu = Lotus eyed ladies, jalakamADE taruNamuna = at the time of taking bath, nI vaccaTiki jani = you, having gone there,
sariga kOkalu = laced sarees, mella = slowly, cEkoni = taking in your hand, taruvu = tree, nekki = having climbed, jUcucuNDuTa = staying there looking, dharmamA = is it fair?

Is it fair to steal the sarees of ladies taking bath and observing from a tree?

uTTi mIdanu = on the sling, (where milk pots are kept) beTTiyuNTe = were kept, caTTi pAlanu = pot of milk, cuTTi = by going round, kanugoni = finding out, koTTi = hitting it(By a stone), cEtula baTTi = holding by hands, tAgina = having drunk, geTTitanamIdi (ceDDatanamidi) kAdayyA = is this not bad?

Is it not wickedness? You went around to find the pot of milk kept in the sling, hit it and drank the milk?

alla lakSmi valla puDavai tolli alarE balla lOpala
golla paDucula gUDitivi = You met the shepherd women. ati cellu, nI gati cellunA = is it proper this way?
ilanu = on this earth, ninu mati dalaci jUDaga = thinking about you, nalugurunu = all people, ninu nagudu ranucunu = will laugh at you,
lalita malaiyALamuna tAgina bhaLi bhaLira shrI padmanAbha salAmayyA = salutations.

I couldnot completely translate the last couplet.

The song is a shabdam by Vadivelu. The book indicates kAmbhOji as the rAgA but in the song kAmbhOji is first and then dhanyAsi is used.
To my knowledge, all Sabdams are in kAmbOdhi by default and even in rAgamAlike the basic rAga will be kAmbOdhi only.

My sister was taught this Sabda when she learnt dance. The first rAga is of course kAmbOdhi. Next comes kalyANi. I remeber the third as bhairavi. I could be wrong on this. The last is suraTi.

A couple of typos::
**
It is * jalakamADE*

*nekkucu*

* pettiyunDE*

*ala lakshmI vallabhuDavai*

*adi*

* naguduranucunu*

*malayALamuna*

*tagina*

***********
Meaning for the last two lines.

******

appropriately, in the sweet language of

malayALam, bravo,bravo,Sri padmanabha,

salutations to you.

******
Though it may not be of much interest, after all

these years,,could not resist the urge, to correct

typos and complete the translation.
