Brhaddvani's Universe of Sound music festival @ Chennai

The Universe of Sound is a 3-day festival featuring some of the top names in the musical milieu talking to audiences in a facilitative, interactive forum. They will present their art and discuss their process.

Each day will focus on one of the three basic aspects of music - melody, harmony and rhythm. Each day will bring together an artist of the highest standing in the Indian classical context in conversation with a musician from a western context. It will feature a live performance followed by discussions. All events will be held at the historically renovated and landscaped campus of the MCTM Chidambaram Chettyar International School, Luz Church Road, Alwarpet.

The festival features Padmashri Aruna Sairam on the first day, Sangeet Samrat Chitravina N. Ravikiran on the second day, and Dr. Trichy Sankaran on the final day. They will be in conversation with eminent musicians from abroad - Frances Shepherd from the United Kingdom, Woody Shaw from the United States and Eero Hamminemi from Finland.

Excitingly, our celebrity guests - Rajeev Menon and Ramesh Vinayagam introduce the speakers on the first and second days, bringing the perspective from the bigger world of entertainment as catalysts for the conversations to follow. We also bring you the world of the visual arts, with an exhibition centered around the theme "Madras in December"

What is the timing? Could you post the program, please?

I wish you would consider presenting the basic information on the site as priority --- frankly, I found it all rather confusing. I spent some time looking around, and do not even know what time of day things are happening!

I am very, very sad that I will busy most of this weekend, but if the events of the 20th extend into the evening, then I hope to be able to come. It looks like a great project. Wishing you every success

Have just spoken to someone at Brhaddvhani.

To all rasikas - this seems like a fabulous festival. They have two singers down frmo Kolkata also - Sucheta Ganguly and Manali Bose - who are Hindustani exponents, in addition to some reputed western classical musicians as well (from UK and US, I think).

It truly seems to be a "Universe of Sound", features some of our top artists and best of all - has free admission. I vote that we all go in great numbers for it!!

All performances start at 10 AM and go on till 12:30 - Friday (18th), Saturday (19th) and Sunday (20th).

There are two performers from SRA - Manali Bose and Sucheta Ganguly. They will perform on the third day (20th). They are both excellent - I got the privilege of hearing them live at the SRA campus in Kolkata just three weeks ago.

Tomorrow is Aruna Sairam (10 - 12) and she will focus on aspects of raga delineation. Its free admission. This is an invitation to all to attend.

Ravikiran will lead the second day (19th), discussing harmony while Sri Trichy Sankaran will lead the third day.

Strange, the discussion is between Carnatic musicians and Western music and the performances we get to hear are Hindustani and Carnatic.

Not able to correlate.

lahari - when we create a website, I really expect that you will move your cursor effortfully enough that you can see who is discussing and who is performing.

And my deepest apologies for not checking with you about correlations, categorizations of people based on nationality (for instance, Frances Shepherd is a Hindustani musician from the UK - but because she hails from the West, we will categorize her differently, shall we?).

Also - western music is pure poison that cannot correlate with HIndustani or Carnatic. And while we are at it, shall we classify HM and CM further and call it "North Tamil NAdu branch" or "Indo Gangetic plain branch" or the like...

or perhaps like some of us who just care about good music and good musicians, we just go to events and learn rather than worry about things not fitting into preset grids? or even, just appreciate somewhere in that rather overcategorical approach that things do not HAVE to correlate and that is the beauty of all forms of music itself.

But who cares, we will just sit and pass comments and let others do all the work of getting people down, won't we?

Asrini: On the contrary, I was trying to scan the site the last good few days and couldnt make any sense out of it. Thus, after lots of cursor moving efforts, I tried to clarify my doubts. Moreover, if you take offence for just one question and that too a simple and direct one, I wonder how you will sustain barrage of questions esp related to the festival, the organisation, the program etc.

In your UOS page, you say, "Who will perform?" and then you say "in conversation with" and then finally the program chart has the title "Conference details". Anybody will be confused. Another thing that actually baffled me was the "Adjunct performance" I wondered what that was. I am not an English professor and just a simple Indian who speaks South Indian English. I have only heard of adjunct professors, not adjunct performance.

Btw, I take back the "correlation" thing. Happy, asrini?

Altogether I agree with Lahari. The UOS website is unnecessarily .... shall we say... sophisticated.

The organisation is doing great work, and I'm very sorry to be missing this event, but it's true that I can't compliment the website. A page of simple text would have conveyed the information.

Not a huge deal... just something to be noted for next time... and I hope there is a next time!
