Thanks, annapoorne. Sikkil Gurucharan fiiiiiiiinally gets senior standing. And Kunnakdy BMK in the evening slot, too! Well deserved, I would say.

Thanks for the link.

I had spent some time searching the site for it --- before realising they have a big splash on the front page [Blush] !

:) but the web site does not make it easy - the home page has two copies of the same picture of the building as well as pictures of the current and past presidents that are prominently displayed. In my setup I had to scroll down to see the 2009 season announcement.

So who are the seniors who have been retired to give way to the youngsters in the senior slot? Some absences I noticed include MSG, TVR, Jayanthi Kumaresh and MS Sheela

Maybe taking in the Academy Season program is one of the tests of a rasika: my head spins after looking at a couple of days!

Are the two evening senior slots considered equivalent in terms of stature? And, how about the super-senior morning slot but on the last day. Shashank is given that slot.

VK - the mornings seem to be allocated to (usually senior) musicians who don't traditionally draw large audiences. Both evening slots are equal in stature with the same ticket valid for both sessions.

Other omissions include AKC Natarajan (Last year's Kalanidhi), Hyderabad Brothers and Kadri Gopalnath. Any NRIs performing this year? I only recognised Ranja Swaminathan in a noon concert.

TVR is a big omission; especially this is GNB centennial year. Rama Ravi , Rudrapatnam Brothers are some notable omissions.

I thought I saw Rudrapatnam bros listed!

Shashank was given the morning slot perhaps because there weren't enough slots in the evening for all.
Yes, I will miss AKC this year.

Appalled to see that Smt. Gayathri Girish is not featured on the Senior slot this year! And Smt. Vasudha Keshav is featured in the Junior slot!!

Seems that the inmates have taken over the asylum :(

I expected to see Abhishek Raghuram and Swarna Rethas too. I'm a bit disappointed that they are not in the lists.

LOL! You are probably correct! I can think of some of the 'seniors' who make their MMA concerts seem like 'light-music-bhajani extravaganzas' who could have made way. It is indeed a pity that Smt. Gayathri Girish is not featured in the senior slot.

A note of dissent...

When one can see one's favourite and most-respected musicians at other venues, why worry whether they are favoured by the Music Academy itself?

The Academy is only the great authority over seniority whilst the rasika public consider it to be so.

But, hey, perhaps this academy-slot watching is as much part of the festivities as is canteen appreciation, and I'd hate to take away from anybody's Seasonal Fun, so --- dissent over :)

Annamalai,
Rudrapatnam Bros on the 19th.

Bilahari,
Not to worry. TNS gives the first evening concert of the season.

I don't understand the Music Academy's logic. Shashank draws packed crowds as witnessed by his last year's morning concert. And I will take a bet that 90% of this audience would have still made it even if the concert was ticketed.

However the MA prefers to give top slots to folks who don't draw half the crowd.

Shashank not playing at prime slot seems more of a loss to MA than to Shashank.

Let's see. Shashank IS playing, which makes him and the rasikAs happy. He 'does' attract crowds, whatever time of the day, and as a bonus, those who have always wanted to hear him but haven't--will only add to the number of rasikAs because it is free, no worry about getting public transport or auto at a late hour. And rasikAs don't have to push and shove even if they paid for admission as they do sometimes for a poular evening concert.
All in all, sounds good! It is not an odd thing either for the Acedemy to schedule an instrumentalist for the morning. I have heard Ravi Kiran a few times in the morning.

Just wondering why there is a special interest for NRI's as a separate category of performers?

Wait a second! I don't seem to find Suryaprakash either! Am I not thorough in scanning the schedule?

HINT: those seekers of a specific artist can use their browser's search function:

FireFox: key "/" to go straight to a text entry box at the bottom of the screen. You can type Ctrl-G to repeat the search on this and any subsequent page until you enter a new search test. Ctrl-F gives a slightly more complex search.

Internet Explorer: Ctrl-F or use "Find on this page" in the Edit Menu.

I never use Internet Explorer, so offer the above as a pointer only. Similarly, I always use / in Firefox, so can't comment further about the Ctrl-F input, though I should check it out.

<a few minutes later>

.... Yes, the "Highlight all" in Firefox's Ctrl-F search is neat!

Girish Surendra (Brindamma's grandson) is in the junior slot on the 20th. I hope we get to hear some nice padams which he is excellent at.

as arasi said, Academy has a trend of shuttling people between morning and evening slots. Some people i can immediately think off are, Ravikiran, OST, Shashank, Trichur & Charumathi Ramachandran, Nedunuri, Srikantan, m sure there are many others...

My take on this was that the morning slot was reserved for senior artistes who are past their "prime". Now it seems that they want us to play find-the-odd-man-out :)

i did not know such a big thread was happening and i started a thread of my own...hehehe....our Mohan pointed out this link.

Is Abhishek missing because he spoke in between his concert last year? Like he mentioned that one song is dedicated for his friend from Banglore..... I hope not as that is a lil harsh on him...

Good to see that Mysore Nagaraj and Manjunath have got a prime slot this year. They didnt perform last year in the academy. Also nice that V K Raman is performing in the sub senior category.

Yes, nice to see them fetured prominently. I have heard them in the morning slot but I do feel that showcased in the evening slot will draw more crowds.
Of course, they will be accompanying several stars as they did last year.

Notable missing- Maharajapuram Ramachandran/Srinivasan, Gayathiri (Veena). I remember Maharajapuram Santhanam was asked to fix his date in MA for Dec programme. Sad to see the IIIrd Generation Maharajapuram is missing.

Last year missing, added this year- Priya S and Satur S.

He did that the previous year (2007) also. So may be he was castigated for doing this 2 years in a row :)

On some more reflection, I have concluded that the main stumbling block is the fixed duration of 15 days to accommodate all these artistes.

You are right. Too many artistes in every category, too little time to accomodate them all.
By the way, Raji Gopalakrishnan is another name I miss. However, her student Vilasini--a rasikA member too--is slated to sing. Hope she sings one of Ramaraj's songs, if time permits.

If there is going to be a jam session of the RasikAs, it will be nice if she sings a few songs of dear Ramaraj. How I wish Cool joins in and makes things happen!

Are the schedules of other sabhas available anywhere? I could be in Chennai only after January 02, 2010. Will there be any concerts in any of the sabhas after Jan 02,2010 ? I know that Music Academy programs end on Dec 31.

Sundara Rajan,
Still more to come, since some sabhas haven't come out with their schedules. Ram keeps updating them, so it's worth looking his blog up regularly.

Thank you Arasi. I would also appreciate any information on the January 2010 schedule of Satguru Samajam, Madurai, usually held in the fisrst two weeks. I would like to attend some of the concerts there, especially of artists that I would miss in Chennai season. I note from her website that Bombay Jayashri will be singing in Satguru Samajam, Madurai on Jan 13,2010.

I saw some schedules are already up here - http://chennaidecemberseason.com

But it is sad to see the sabhas' websites have not been updated for a long time now including Sri Krishna Gana Sabha - http://www.krishnaganasabha.org/ , Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha - http://parthasarathysabha.com/ , Kartik Fine Arts - http://www.kartikfineartschennai18.com/ . . .

I am surprised an artiste of the calibre of R.Suryaprakash doesn't figure in the Music Academy's scheme of things this year...He gave an outstanding performance in Minneapolis last month. He must be in the prime slot.

Continuing my earlier thread

"¢Hyderabad Brothers- is also missing.
"¢Gayathri Girish, Veena Gayathri, MSG duo or LGJ duo are definitely better than Bombay Jaishree, Unnikrishnan and Papanasam Ashok Ramani and Aruna Sairam

"¢Priya Sisters addition was also surprising. Last concert, I heard was below par. They have become "Mambalam Sisters"

many good quality singers do not get frequent chances in Music Academy? Even i can point out many good singers who have not sung in Academy for many years, some artists who are not up to the basic standard get frequent chances, committee alone knows the reason, On what basis does the committee select and promote the artists???

their comittee functions the way BCCI used to select our cricket team 20 years back. ability has nothing to do with it. each member has his list to push through. in the past they used to pester touring singers for booze and cigrettes and other gifts now maybe that is not there. mudslinging and hyping all part of the game. it is a well known that ashok ramani cannot sing much these days. as academy concerts are held so you can be seen there it does not matter if singer is singing or braying. real music lovers can go to narada gana sabha for less money. better still empty the bladder at academy first then go as atleast toilets are best there. also useful in the afternoon for taking naps as seats are more comfortable.
