Nope, it is laghumikara. The sahityam is taught wrong by some teachers who have bad/ambiguous pronunciation.

What does laghumikara mean? Some one who makes things small (laghu)?

lakumikara is how the word is in all the books (including one in kannaDa), I have seen - lakumikara meaning the giver/bestower/creator of auspiciousness (as I understand it, lakumikara is a 'corruption', if you will, of lakshmIkara)

laghumikara would mean 'make things easy', though it is not strictly correct sanskrit derivation. Kannada experts can comment!

Please. Please - it is not 'lagumikara' or 'laghumikara'!

As rshankar pointed out, it should be 'lakumikara'.

ravi - been busy and still adjusting to a new schedule.

I dont know many (cm) songs starting with l - I guess lEkana and lavanya rama would be the favorites for me in this thinly crowded field.

Yes indeed Shankar! We always miss the related letters and sounds while learning the songs in Tamil especially when we do not know the meanings. In this case I had rationalized and missed the true expression. Paradoxically in this case Tamil happens to be correct and the reasoning did go astray. Learning the correct sahityam is very important and it will be nice if we can also know the meanings to enjoy CM complelely. In that context hats off to you (and others) who tirelessly help out with lyrics and meanings at thiis site !

lakumi kara - Bestow Goodness.

This whole geetha is in sanskrit.

CML/ramakriya/rshankar - "lakumi", in Sanskrit does it mean "Goodness" ??

I believe Purandara composed it in Kannada (Ramakriya pl clarify). Probably it is manipravlam since sanskrit words can be liberally used in Kannada. The word 'lakumi' is certainly not sankrit but maybe a corruption of 'lakShmI' signifying good fortune. The sanskrit expression 'lakSmIk^Ri' would mean render auspicious. That is what Shankar is suggesting.

May be it is similar to what we say 'lakshmIkaram' in tamizh, meaning auspicious; in tamizh ,for lakshmi we also say 'ilakkumi'

I thought so too! But we don't know about Kannada. We don't say 'lakumi' in Tamil.

CML/Punarvasu/rshankar- All of U are 100 % Correct.

"lakumi" is a Kannada word used for Lakshmi.

lakumi kara is a manipravalam used by Purandara Dasa !!!

When we see the whole lyrics, this is the only Kannada word "lakumi" used .

lambOdhara lakumikara ; ambAsutha amara vinutha; sakala vidya Adhi pUjitha ;sarvOthama thE namo namO;
(pl corrrect me if i'm wrong)

Manjunath - you are correct - that one word is in kannaDa! Just like Sri HKMB much later, who also used a few kannaDA words in predominantly sanskrit compositions (eg. the word 'mAtE' in his khamAs daru varNam).

Thanks Manjunath
My Tamil lyrics book as well as notes show it as 'lakumikaraa'. Of course the final swara is sa, (dIrghaM) but the sambodana in sanskrit requires h^Risvam (lakumikara). I wonder what the kannada lyric book reads!

rshankar- Very much true(mAthe of HMB).
CML Sir- Will check up & will come back.

Generally, it shows how all of us take it for granted a well known simple geetham by P.Dasa has many things to discuss in a raga like Malahari.
