My mother recollected Shobillu Saptaswara as one of my grandmother's fav compositions, saying that she especially loved the chittaswarams in it. I noticed that I instantly took a liking to the extra swara in the avarohanam - the shuddha rishabam that gives the "otherworldly" feel that Jaganmohini has.

Strangely but perhaps not so strangely, I was playing Gambheera Naattai the other day and meshed easily into Shobillu and back.

Jaganmohini is one fascinating ragam. Does anyone know of compositions other than Shobillu Saptaswara?

In Prasanna's most recent release, "Live in Sedona", he has performed Shobillu Saptaswara - a pretty neat guitar rendition. Also came across a couple of Mandolin Srinivas renditions on Sangeethapriya, but the one that really enthralled me was a version by Punya Srinivas on the Veena. Simply brilliant. Here it is:

Hope the link works (I've had problems with links pased from Sangeethapriya searches in the past. If not, just search up for sobillu or jaganmohini and you should be able to find this file.

(I was listening to an RTP in Kharaharapriya by Santhanam where he improvises into Jaganmohini amidst Naattai, Saramati, Arabhi and more.)

'Mamava Sathatham' -Jaganmohini-Adi taalam, 2-kalai- (I THINK )Thyagaraja (not sure). Lalgudi Jayaraman has distilled the essence of this raga AND the kriti - should be available in one of the commercial recordings.

and also Smt DKP has sung an RTP in this ragam which is very haunting.

Dear Rajesh,
I have heard many old musicologists mention that it was my father Shri GNB who added the chittaswarams to Sobillu. Rasikas please correct me if it is wrong.

gb_rajasekar, first of all, my compliments to you for carrying on the tradition. People like GNB are an inspiration to neophytes like me.

I don't know of the history of this sahityam and generally take sahityam for granted, although I'm aware it evolves as different people add/remove parts to/from it. Lovely chittaswaram that was, and if indeed it was GNB, my thanks to him for it.

Rajasekar Sir,

I have heard (with authority) that the cittasvara for 'Sobhillu' was the creation of Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer.

A beautiful song. The Tillaisthanam school pATAntarA of this song is in a very leisurely 2-kaLai kAlapramANa and very soothing. The version popularized by the DKP / DKJ school is in a faster tempo, but no less enjoyable...
