rajesh, dont worry after this crossword, we will share our experiences.
yeah, arun and suji meticulously stick to the accepted crossword norms.
mine is a 'freeflow' attempt.
but this one, i have taken spl. efforts to make it look like a 'real' crossword as many of us have encountered in newspapers.
in fact arun's was the first freeform crossy i ever attempted. its far ahead in quality and it only inspired me to try my hand at creating one.
thanks arun.

Took a first look at your crossword. Quite a lot is easy to mediocre and few immediate takeaways are there. For the last 2 hours , I am stuck with 3 clues
# 8.& 13.ac : Put flowers before Slumdog heroine, and she will sing this raga (6,7)
This clue is very very difficult to me . Not an inch I am able to move here.
# 2.The path in 'Dur Marga Chara' is upside down (5)
Looked at this clue even upside down , this is also tough, though I am 50-50% with an answer but the answer may be a last minute guess, just in case if I dont move forward.
Other two crossword trinities (suji and arun),
How is it going for you?
All others,
I urge you all to attempt this . You can break the ice easily with 12 Down.

I did know slumdog millionaire but somehow that first name and last name is still not fitting with raga and also not fitting with other neighbouring clues that I solved.
With respect to upside down , as I stated before my 50-50% could be right, but stillnot sure how it fits in the clue?
Give me a day (I will post all the remaining answers )guessing upside down but me being not a millionaire I will pass that ,you just verify if all my remaining answers are right, the worst thing is me getting confidently a clue but later it turn out to be wrong in turn jeopadrizing all the rest . I will tie the paper and send you a spam mail. Looks like I usually miss one or two clues, that is my crossword padantara
.
Curious about the usual top finishers suji and arun . What is happening to Ragam thalam and sridhar_rang in this crossword , where are they placed ?

Looking at the post of RT and Suji they have got it . For me still no clue . Some loud thinking here the actress in SD millionaire is frieda pinto, how can that fit in the answer for 8 Down and 13 Across. Should I go and see that movie (not seen that yet) to get the answer  ? Time to really rolleyes and sleep, at times I get the answer in my sleep
.

O narayanan
You have given the solution, I thought you should have waited for more to join, especially with sitters like damal and sudha being there. For me I overcomplicated the SDM clues thinking it is too ragas. May be if I had seen the movie, the actual character name may have helped.
I could not reason out agram though I guesed as G & A was already solved and went with agram (need your reasoning for that)
UMA and MAA was quite easy.
The ahiri is something I did not write it in reverse initially, but after getting all the clues around it wrote ahiri as iriha(never knew crosswords can have reverse answers)
Thakita and Anu were the most difficult to solve for me , considering I got pushpa and lathika only after the last specific clue of suji.
All except two is right. Really have to roll my eyes and sleep now.

I got most of the answers but fitting was a problem. Reversing in CW never heard that. That put me off in all the ones in that corner though I got all my answers.. And Agram is that carnatic term for something or song name ? So savitri was my answer but did not fit. Uma I knew but not Maa. Ata was right but Anu?
And it is "ta ki ta" though I knew your ways of spelling : )
Tha ka dhi mi and ta ki ta that's the way we write. I hope I am right ( I attend mrdangam lessons

i think i have given clues for both the reversals.
"upside down" for 'marga' and "from the right" for 'ahiri'. it is still marga and ahiri only.
just you have to see from the opposite side.
and suji, dont make me cry with the problems i had to face while making a symmetric crossword.
i had to fit some words in those places.

I had solved all except ANU and MAA - it's funny how sometimes you can't get the small ones!
My feedback: Some of the clues were way too obvious, e.g. for SUDHA and DAMAL. You could have made them a bit more interesting, e.g. "Tyagaraja's Andholika kriti without the raga rasa" or "First name of trinity singer who is considered a musical dam always" etc.
Look forward to the next one. Is it Suji's turn now?

I am ready with another one. However Rajesh wanted some lessons on how to create CWs. I guess he is asking how to get those dubba's made. As for me I use just an empty grid and fill in as I please. Crosswords creators are good but it takes many trials to achieve the desired one. I am faster making one manually after picking most from CW maker.

Sorry to intrude,
I am not good at all at solving these puzzles but I thought I will quickly create one, a crazy one to see how oblique brained you all are.
Ready?

Here are the clues:
Down
2. Run Run Kauravas, I share something with the victors (7)
3. White Skinned people may be fond of this place in TN.. may be but then people who live there don't need that skin treatment (7) -
Across
1. Oh Lord, dont go to the past, participle that is, let me praise you with that name (10)
4. when the usual path is not good enough (5)
5. Moon colored Prasanna vadana (7)
The numbers in paranthesis are the number of letters in the answer.
I am sure if someone gives this to me, I would never be able to solve it, it is much easier to make clues. I tried to phrase the clues as obscure as possible but without going too far in the deep end.
May be this will be a piece of cake for all of you.

Crossword is something new to me only with Arun's #1 , I have been making a slow start. You can assume crossword creators have to be like deep thinking software performers , they have to break their head zillion times so that they are convinced that there is enough latch for the end solvers to solve the same . In first pass for the first 2 minutes , I did not get even one . Perhaps give us atleast 3 to 4 days.
DONT REVEAL THE ANSWER
Suji
Once we are solving VK's (hopefully), you 3 can go into the mode of teaching us how to create puzzles ?

Rajesh,
It's just a play of words. I take a particular word and split meaningfully and frame a question giving indications about what to do. Other times I find homophones somewhat like samam (sum) or same word different meaning-like drone
For eg in my first CW: I picked carukesi- I find rasik and cue as meaningful words. Then I have to somehow indicate for solvers to arrive at it.
It was all by chance I hooked it to sarangi as they sound similar. A word came to my mind as "fine tune" rasik and cue to a different melody.
Similarly sarasangi I split to get -I sang with rasa-. I needed a word again and I chose "Sort" for solvers to arrive at it. Therefore I said sort of like carukesi
You can easily judge now after solving several CWs from us how we think.
It is all a random process and there are several ways to think about it.
You can also use software to generate words for you, but I usually sit during commute and think it out myself. It makes us feel smart sometimes
I'm sure you will enjoy my next one.
VK's ones seem tough for me. Need some indicators like melody, beat people etc.

hi vk, yes it is obscure. but let us rake our brains for a while.
rajesh, there are free softwares like crossword compiler and crossword forge.
actually they are not free, but allow a trial version. (namakku than edhaiyum kasu koduthu vaangi pazhakkame kedayadhe. at least me. 'freea kodutha kodu, illena un sangaathame vendaam' category naan.)
they allow us to create the crossword, but we cant export it to the web.
crossword forge allows only 'freeform' crosswords. no symmetric ones. after making the crossword you have to 'print screen' the page and make a .jpg from paint. thats what i did. maybe arun has a licensed software.
crossword compiler allows you to create and save a symmetric crossword. but it does not allow to reopen it with trial software. (enna kodumai saravanan idhu)
so, once saved and closed it is govinda. so before closing, again we have to take necessary 'print screen's and make jpgs out of it.
of course it is a cumbersome process, but when people attempt them enthusiastically, all the efforts seem to be worth it.

c2w.com allows to create an online crossword. nothing to download. just give the words and the clues. it creates a freeform crossword.
but a drawback is, the answers are always available. u can click 'reveal' and see the answers. so we cant resist ourselves after 10, 15 minutes. we will naturally click 'reveal'.
i will try it with vk's puzzle, if he can give the answers to me. my mail id is [email protected].
to see how it looks click here:
http://narayananswaminathan.blogspot.co ... sword.html
just click on the squares, it will allow you to type in the grid itself.

I got only 3 down. White Skinned people may be fond of this place in TN.. may be but then people who live there don't need that skin treatment (7) - because of skin treatment and tan and then to tanjore. All the rest no clue, this is like writing an engineering paper "Electromagnetics" in my second year of college. No clue there, just scraped thru similiarly only by tanjore I just scraped.
