I've seen a couple dance clips online of this famous song and often a jathi would be included in the beginning. However none of the jathis seem to fit with the thalam (ata).

Like this one, by Hema Malini: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHQBn6Scbp8 The Jathi starts around 1:15. Am I doing thalam wrong or is it a different thalam?

It is khanda jaathi (laghu) ata thalam, so make sure you are counting (in chatushra nadai) 5 aksharams for 2 lagus in succession, plus 2 druthams. This results in 14 total maathras.
