The activity on the B song list is dying down slowly and # of posts is also close enough to the half-century mark. So I thought we can move on to B. Please post your favorite song that starts with C.

Try to limit your choice to one song if possible, or say up to 2-3 songs. If possible, please indicate why you like it (personal, analytical etc.). Please include raga, tala and composer info if you have it, and info on where people can listen to it - but watch out for commercial recording abuse!

Here is a (probably not fully comprehensive) listing of the krithis by Trinity (and others) which can be used to jog your memory:

Warning: shameless plugs ahead ;)

Mine again came down to a battle between 2: cakkani rAja vs. cEta SrIbAlakRshnam

cEta Sri is a sentimental favorite (as explained in http://sunson.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/ ... ittle-one), but kharaharapriya is supreme for me (as hinted in http://sunson.wordpress.com/2009/06/29/ ... on-earth/)

I decided on cakkani based on only one thing. For cEta Sri, I like only SSI's version. In fact, I have heard others render it (yester-year as well as contemporary) and they don't come anywhere close to what SSI's version does for me. However take cakkani, and I can pretty much enjoy anybody render it. The sangatis in every part of the song are just too, too good. So cakkani rAja it is for me.

Do we have a recording of alathur bros rendering this :)

Is this a papansam sivan krithi? On the back of a commercial album it was attributed to a random no-name composer.

Actually, I love Rajesh Vaidhya's rendition in his 'Voyage' cd.
I also like Mandolin Srinivas's Rendition.
I am not sure if there are any other Veena Renditions of this very beauriful song, and would be grateful if some one can direct me to some.

I know I am in for trouble. Yes, cakkani rAja is a precious song, but do I want to here it in a concert again? No.

Yes, Manjunath! Haven't heard my favorite cintayAmi in a long while. It is a gem. Not many sangatis, but so complete in how a song should be, the madhyama kAlam bit too.

BhArati in any song wins. candiran oLiyil is a winner--with gItA sAram embedded in it: payanilAdu uzhaikkac connAL, bakti seidu pizhaikkac connAL...

cEta Sri with cakkani rAja pulling in second for exactly the opposite reason as Arun. It's because SSI has sung this composition so brilliantly that I love it to death. The very fact that so many people have sung the krithi but only one has a lasting impact on me makes me think there's something special about the composition. On the other hand, while almost everybody does a good job with cakkani rAja, I'm yet to hear a rendition that blows me away completely. So, SSI is probably the deciding factor between the two compositions for me. Also the other thing I like about cEta Sri is the unique perspective it offers of the ragam, and the cEta Sri face of dwijAvanti is almost never explored in alapanais, with akhilAnDESwari providing the bulk of the raga's definition. Of course, cakkani rAja is a majestic and brilliant composition, but also a tad overdone so it doesn't maintain its luster for me. I also like cittam irangAda in sahAna (see R-G singing it on youtube).

My choices:

Chakkani Raja - the king among 'C' compositions!

Chinnanjiru PeN pOlE - Ulundurpettai Shanmugam - in Sirgazhi Govindarajan's voice - in my view, the queen among 'C' compositions!

Chintaya ma Kanda mulakandam & Chetasri Balakrishnam as well.

Arun,

I never knew that 'C' was going to be so tough. My favourites in the order below. (And Chakkani takes the 1st place after a tough fight with Chetah Sri :) )

And Cool, I agree with you, Chittam Eppadiyo by KVN is a masterpiece.

1)Chakkani Rajamargamu - Kharaharapriya - Adi - T
2)Chetah Sri Balakrishnam Bhajare - Dwijavanti - Rupakam - MD
3)Chandram Bhaja Manasa - Asaveri - Chaturashra Matya - MD
4)Chittam Eppadiyo - Nadanamakriya - Mishra Chapu - Mayuram Samuel Vedanayagam Pillai
5)Chediyaaya (Pashuram) - Hamsanandi - Kulashekhara Azhwar (Usually sung as a Virutham)
6)Chandrashekharam Aashraye - Keeravani - Khanda Triputa - Dr V.Raghavan

Could not find my favorite version of this one (the one by TMS), but found this 'sad' version of the song - Is the singer one of the Sulamangalam Sisters, or is it Rajeshwari?
http://www.raaga.com/play/?id=154899

(Is it based on khamAs)?

Shankar
I guess it is Rajeshvari. I have seen the raga classified as Kalyani elsewhere which I totally disagree though the pratimadhyamam is being used!
I agree it is the TMS version that I also enjoy..

Chalame (both the varnam in Nattai Kurunji and Valaji)
The valaji one is sung quite nicely by a girl named Deepti Navaratna.

Chandrasekharaa was released in a fusion cd and for some reason, the fusion sounds better than the original carnatic...
