yesterday i accidently came across a video on youtube. this video is of Padma subramanyam's student. Her name starts from N. She was performing Kalinga nartanam, wearinga blue dress. It was a superb piece. I could not save the URL. If anyone comes across that video again, kindly post the information to me. I searched the whole of youtube and could not find it again today.

thanks a lot in advance.

yes. that was the video. thanks a lot nrityam. a closer look at the description - i too dont think she is Padma ji's student. but i liked her abhinayam. kindly take a look at the below link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgUnS7QO ... re=related

is this the way tillanas are choreographed in kuchipudi- i believe its kuchipudi. or is it according to the music. how come it is classified as a tillana? can we do the same in bharatanatyam. infact i had similar ideas. i even saw sudharani raghupati do the opening of tillanas a little differently. but more or less, the structure/the way they are choreographed- the dimensions remained the same.
i had the idea, looking at sudharani raghupati 's video to choreograph a tillana, with the mudras, sancharis(with nrtta /footwork as normally)according to the sahitya that is at the end of the tillana.
what i saw in the video is close to wat i thought.

pls throw some light.

Nirupama Rajendra is supposed to have learnt the Karanas from Sundari Santhanam, a disciple of PS and so your initial guess is justified.

The (2nd) link above shows Kalinga Narthana Thillana by Oothukkadu Venkatasubbaiyyar . (I am not sure it was Kuchipudi!!!)

If you hear this clip that shows a rendition by Smt. Aruna sairam you will see how it fits into the genre of Thillana. It is definitely different a special thillana. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_R2l5Xnydg

If you look around even in you tube you will find different choreography for the same thillana.

I have seen a lot of Kalakshetra students do this item, though now I see other practitioners do it too. Its quite popular in the performance circuit actually.

You can see older threads related to the thillana at

Nirupama and Rajendra seem to be trained in Bharathanatyam, Kathak and few other styles.
