Does any one have idea on in what context Saint Tyagaraja
write Nagumomu ganaleni keerthana in ragam Abheri?.

The meaning of the song goes like

Oh Lord Rama, I want to see your beautiful face with that
beautiful smile. You know that I am eager to see that.
But why arent you coming for me?.

I heard this song rendered by several musicians but
the one I really liked came from Dr Managalampalli Balamurali garu.

His emotion, soul that flowed into the part

Khagaraju nee ananathi vinivega janaledo
gagananiki ilaku bahuduram ani nando

Jagamele paramathma everito moralidudu
...

His renedering of the above few lines used
to connect audience to the divine smile
of Lord SriRama. Audience soul connected to Lord Rama
through Sri Balamurali garu voice.............

Thats what music can do.

According to Brahma Sri TS Balakrishna Sastrigal (Thyagaraja Ramayanam discourse), this song refers to appeal of vibhIShana beseeching Sri rAma to give him refuge.

Vgvindn Sir,
Doesn't this song show the pinnacle of Sri Thyagarajar's sorrow when he lost the Seeta Rama Vigraha? His brother Sri Japesan had thrown the Vigraha into Kaveri. He was ready to commit suicide. When he finds the vigraha in the river doesn't he sing kanukonti ni sri ramuni??

kAmini vESha dhAriki sAdhvI naDatal(E)maina telusunA - kRti rAma nIyeda - rAga kharahara priya - "Can a person playing the role of a woman know anything about the conduct of a chaste woman?"
At best we are all the vESha dhAris enacting for a moment what a chaste woman practices whole life. If this momentary enactment could give that thrill, how the chaste woman would indeed have felt in the presence of her beloved? Can we someday become that chaste woman to call that purushOttama 'nA jIvAdhAra, nA nOmu phalamA, nA jUpu prakAzamA, nA nAsikA parimaLamA, nA japa varNa rUpamA, nAdu pUjA sumamA'?

I remember seeing an old Telugu movie on Tyagaraja (acted by Somayajulu) where Tyagaraja is shown singing this song at a ripe old age, just waiting to be with Rama. That gave the impression that the context was just that it was his final years where he was increasingly pining for Rama.

I love the way Tyagaraja imaginatively tries to guess the reason for Rama not showing up:
Khagaraju nee ananathi vinivega janaledo
gagananiki ilaku bahuduram ani nando
(didn't Garuda (khaga raju) obey your command fast enough? Did he say it is too far from heaven to earth?)

Also how crisply he describes his plight in the line:
Jagamele paramathma everito moralidudu
(You are the one who rules this world. Who can I go to complain to?)

Dear Music!

I have been waiting to get my hands on that film! They showed it in Singapore a few years ago, but thanks to me not understanding VCR programming I ended up taping half an episode of Seinfeld and a couple of hours of infomercials instead!

I looked for it in different stores in Bombay and Chennai but couldn't find it. Do you know where I can get a copy of it?

I wish they had used a Carnatic musician to be the playback singer for that movie instead SPB.

I've seen another very old telugu movie (black and white) also titled Thyagayya. Nagaiah playing the role of T.
The songs are just lovely.

VK Sir. Excellent link. The USP is that all languages are available. (though Malayalam not appearing in my machine) . Hats off to Mr.Govindan. How much pain individuals are taking (available in public domain) for future generation is something laudable. Thanks a lot.

Indeed Arasi and vganesh. Sri. Govindan's translations and explanations are one of a kind and he does thorough research before presenting the material to us.

The word for word translation from Telugu to English by Govindan is extremely useful and I get to learn some telugu words that frequently occur in Thyagaraja's krithis. Also, it can get to be a hobby to correlate those Telugu words to the nearest tamil word. This all adds to gaining the ability to guess the meaning of a line of telugu sahitya when they occur in a different context. ( it is not easy, many times it stares at you right at your face, but still it seems incomprehensible until the 'aha' moment hits ).

In this Nagumomu case, it is quite enlightening to read Govindan's precise and to the point tamil translation along side BMK's commenary in English.

I lived in Visakhapatnam for a couple of years almost two decades ago. This gave me some grounding in the beautiful Telugu language. Mr. Govindan's great service in providing the lyrics and translations came as a blessing when I was trying to organize my music collection and understand the krithis by the saint.

He helped me understand and appreciate the breadth and depth of Thygaraja's compositions. I salute Mr. Govindan.
