"This was the picture of the music world in the South at the beginning of the 20th century. There were many giant musicians and composers. Mysore's Veena Seshanna and Bidaram Krishnappa, Patnam Subramanya Iyer, Maha Vaidyanathar Aiyar, Ramnad Srinivasa Iyengar, Thatchur Singarachar brothers and Mysore Vasudevachar among the composers, and Semmangudi Narayana Iyer and Thirukkodikkaval Krishna Iyer among the violinists were the more prominent."

The above musicians are mentioned as the greats living at the turn of the 20th century.
Which of today's musicians will be mentioned in a similar vein in an article 100 years from now?

I suppose TNS will appear in the list for sure.

Though I personally dislike the term, "male or female musician" , the list above is partial to one gender. Maybe Un-intended !!!!

In the 2109 list of vocalists, ( and artist with multi dimensional skills), definetly, TNS will top the list. !! !!

Lalgudi Jayaraman, UKS, Ramani, TK Murthy, M Chandasekharan, Doraiswamy Iyengar, T H Vinayakaram, Trichy Sankaran, Vellore Ramabhadran, TVG, M Easwaran, V V Subramaniam, Karaikudi Mani , i'm sure have to be there among instrumentalists. Even here some of them have more than one skill !

The likes of TKG, R K Srikantan goes without saying. I am sure Sanjay, Vijay Siva, TMK, Sriram Parasuram, RK Shriramkumar will follow suit.

In the female category, however, it goes without saying that Sudha, BJ, Nityasree, Aruna, Sowmya will be the makutams .

Brinda-Mukta, Smt.R.Vedavalli, according to me top the list in the senior vidwat list. Suguna (s), MK, will not be left out.

Oh , i think it is now getting a little tiresome for me and hence i stop with this !!! Bye.

Leaving aside the elder generation for the moment, among the several great performers of the younger generation, if I have to pick just one name it will be Chitraveena Ravikiran.

TKG would get a Unique and a Very strong position in history for making notations available in English. With the advent on online teaching and remote teachers, the presence of good notations from a Sangeetha Kalanidhi definately help younger generations.

We don't seem to have vaggeyakaras of the stature of Patnam and Poochi these days...
Would Srivatsa's name go into the annals of history? He is a top-class composer.

Another rating thread!!! How come we never get tired to find ways to eulogize our favorite artists?

Anyhow my take on this issue: CM today is undergoing what film music underwent 30-40 years ago, i.e. birth of commercialization. One of the powerful aftermath of a full/partial blown commercialization is 'short memory' or even a shorter lifetime of a performer. For even someone like the legendary Illayaraja, who was ruling from the late 70's to mid 90's, there is only a minority that still actively remembers his music. So, if this is the case for Illayaraja, imagine the plight of MSV, TMS etc..

So, to assume that the current popular gang will be invariably remembered is kind of an overstatement.

Sri. Kullkarni,

I think you have missed out Dr. TK Murthy, T H Vinayakaram, and Mandolin Srinivas in your list

Cheers,

CC

MMI, MDR, KVN? 2109 would really be the end of the world if these vocalists are not remembered.

But if musicians at the turn of the 20th century are remembered as listed by the original poster, and we suggest contemporary musicians who should be remembered at the turn of the 22nd century, what will happen to the musicians in between? :)

sankirnam,

Sri. Upendran and Sri. Shanmukhasundaram might have been great artistes, but you really think they will be mentioned in 2109? They're not even talked about much now...
