Are you allowed to vote for the Janaka itself? That is easily my favourite!

If I had to pick one Janya (Dhileepakam would be cheating!), Bageshri would be a candidate but more in the Hm domain. For CM it boils down to Kaanada, Madhyamavathi and Abheri. I vote for Madhyamavathi

mine (besides kharahapriya itself) is easily rItigowLa. Lots of wonderful songs - all of them a joy to listen to. Even the film ones are excellent.

Next is probably a toss-up between kAnaDa and Sri and mukhAri depending on the day :)

There are (too) many other favorites:
- SrIrAgam, madyamAvati, maNirangu (I club these together)
- darbAr,nAyaki
- husEni (highly underrated)
- kApi
- AbhEri (i.e. the D2 version)/karnATaka dEvagAndhAri
- dEvamanohari (another underrated raga IMO)
- Sriranjani
- kannaDagowLa

Surely all of them are melodious in their own way. After all, they caught the attention of Tyagaraja, along with the innumerable janya ragas of Harikambhoji :).

I would also like to list a lot of rAgas , as Arun, but assuming you are only asking one it is one and only
brindAvana sArangA :) :)

There are so many good ones under this mela! kApi, though my favourite in this list, I would not altogether consider a janya of Kh'priya (many anyaswaras), so my vote would be for kAnaDa. MukhAri and rItigowLa pulling in close.

A comment first: the janaka ragam is Kharaharapriya, not Karaharapriya. This is the correct naming convention based on Katapayadi scheme. Kara- would make it 21st mela.

My favorite ragams:
Abhogi
Manirangu
Devamanohari
Andholika
...
coming to think about it, just about all of them! :)

Kh.priya must easily be in the top 3 janaka ragas.

My vote is for Sahana. (There goes the non-controversiality of the poll ;))

How about least favorites mela? (but not too rare)
My vote would be Simhendramadhyamam

mukhari hands down for me ( purey on syntactic grounds, I do not feel it really belongs there aesthetically )

Vidya, sahana would be controversial indeed on syntactic grounds but not so on aesthetic grounds, right?

Though all the janya ragas are enjoyable maDHyamAvati stands a shade above. This rAgam gives a genuine feeling of "soukhyam" and it has been aptly chosen as a rAga to conclude a concert. The compositions in maDHyamAvati are numerous and many of them are very popular.

Cool said: should I take it before or after a meal? In other words, 'Is it a morning rAgA or an evening one?'!
Too many favorites there and it is hard to choose.

ksrimech,
You and others may get ticked off by my saying this, but Sri is not on my favorites list at all...

Translated , it will mean-
khara- the rAkshasa(khara-dhUshaNa)
hara-slayer(ie. RAMA)
priyA-(his ) beloved-meaning sItA.
Nothing to do with the topic-but as an aside- :)

Cool,
Still, the politician had a good gorge I think, assuming they were lilies. A favorite with the orientals--lily blossoms dipped n batter and stir-fried is something to relish. When it comes to a politician, he knows what he is doing and we can't win :)

I understand. I have heard other people say that too. I met a vainikA (This is not our forum-friend vainikA). He had come to my guru's place and we were talking about Brindamma, Dhanamma, MSS, and others who could play the veena and sing. He demonstrated a few pieces. I requested him to play the SrI rAga varnam on the vIna but was some how reluctant in playing it. But finally he played and sang an amazing kRti on ganESa by kumAra eTTEndra mahArAjA with tAnAm on the vIna.

BTW, can I tempt you to MDR's vanajAsana (SrI) with alapana, neraval and swarams? LOL.

MDR's rendition of nAmakusumamula is also simply exquisite.

YES! MDR's nAmakusumamula is just brilliant (he was definitely an expert in Sri ragam), though SSI could hold his own with that composition as well.

Smt. Gayathri Venkataraghavan came close with the help of Kum. Charumathi Raguraman a few weeks back for Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha.

Well, Mukhari would be the ONE favourite for me. Huseni, Abheri and Chitharanjani would primarily make up the other 'likes' so to say.

Karna Ranjini is a janya raga of 22nd Mela, appears to have been omitted to be included in the list of janya ragas, by srinivasrgvn.
The Arohana & Avarohana : SRGMGPDS - SNDPMGRS.

The popular songs in this raga are
1) vanchadomune of Sri.Muthaiyya Bhagavatar
2) om namo narayana - by Smt. Ambujam Krishna
3) deena saranyane devaki balane, thiruvarul purivone.....by......(not known)

This raga finds a sure inclusion in the sampradaya bhajans of most of the leading Bhajan artists viz. S/S Udayaloor KR, Thanjavoor Thyagu, OS Sundar, Kovai Jairam ..........

This raga is very ranjitham for the ears, highly attractive and influential, as evident from the very name itself given to this raga.

This is my favorite raga as also rag Bhagesree(Bhageswari)

Nice idea for a thread, but this is like choosing your favourite flavour of ice-cream - everyone has a nice flavour in the end!

I guess Kharaharapriya is one of my favourite ragas along with Keeravani, Charukesi, Kalyani and others. Out of its Janyas I have listened to Kaanada, Reetigowla, Abhogi, Darbar, Kaapi, Madhyamavati, Shri, Mukhari, Shivaranjani, Brindavana Saranga, Shuddha Dhanyasi and some more I can't think of now.

I guess if I were asked to pick a favourite, I'd go with Reetigowla - for Thatvamariya Tharama, and Kaapi for Jagadhoddarana. Also Abhogi for Sri Lakshmi Varaham. :)
