Influenced by the posts of makham earlier in the forum and arunk's twisters in carnatica.net, here is my maiden attempt at a carnatic brain twister. All these are based on janya rAgAs of shankarAbharanam. Hope it is interesting and useful. Enjoy solving these :)

1. Informally greeting a middle east man
2. When flower is dropped, shankarAbharanam results in _______ raga
3. This one is a marked raga
4. Disfigured grandmaster separates 1 from 11
5. Energetic male dance
6. Van carrying tamil rose is toppled
7. This raga jumps out of air junk
8. A star lies between an Israeli princess and an Indian beauty
9. Centerless shankarAbharanam
10. Mr.X takes one from Dad.

(If you notice any errors in these, please do post it in the forum itself. Thank you :) )

My calculated guesses may be right or too much away from the right answer. For each of the answers I have given my own right/wrong reasoning:

1. Informally greeting a middle east man
Aarabi( A man from arabia )

2. When flower is dropped, shankarAbharanam results in _______ raga
kurinji (kurinji is a flower )

3. This one is a marked raga

4. Disfigured grandmaster separates 1 from 11
athaana ( gm anand and number ten)

5. Energetic male dance
devagAndhAri (just guessing)
6. Van carrying tamil rose is toppled
navarose (navarOj)

7. This raga jumps out of air junk
kolahalam( arising from cocacola/pepsi junk)

8. A star lies between an Israeli princess and an Indian beauty
hamsadhvani (hamsa has to do something with israeli and vani is some beauty )

9. Centerless shankarAbharanam
hamsavinOdini (guess because of the rAga stature)

10. Mr.X takes one from Dad.
maanD (wild imagination Mr X is a mandu character in tamizh weekly)

Excellent job guys!!

Jigyaasa got # 7 correct
sridhar_rang got # 3 and # 6 correct
erode14 got # 2 and # 5 correct
rajeshnat got # 1, # 2, # 6 and # 10 correct (the reasoning I had for # 1 and # 10 is slightly different which I have given below)

#s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 10 have been solved.

Solutions for the ones already solved:

1. Informally greeting a middle east man - Arabhi from Arab (for middle east man) + Hi (informal greeting)

2. When flower is dropped, shankarAbharanam results in hamsavinOdhini raga. This is because shankarAbharanam means ornament of shiva and seven swaras refer to the seven ornaments namely Sarpa, Rudraksha, Ganga, Mrga, Pushpa, Dhamaru and Nisakara. Removing flower (Pushpa refers to panchamam) results in hamsavinOdhini which is shankarAbharanam without panchamam.

3. This one is a marked raga - kEdAram obtained by descrambling a marked.

4. <Not solved>

5. Energetic Male Dance - tAndavam (straight from its literal meaning)

6. Van carrying tamil rose is toppled - navarOj This is obtained by descrambling van roja (roja for rose in tamil)

7. This raga jumps out of air junk - kuranji obtained by simply descrambling air junk

8. <Not solved>

9. <Not solved>

10. Mr. X takes one from Dad - mAnd obtained by Man (from Mr.) and D (one letter from Dad)

I will wait for one more day before I reveal the answers for # 4, # 8 and # 9. Thank you all for your participation :)

# 9 seems to be putrika which is the niroshta raga # 29. Niroshta merely means lipless and can refer to any of the 36 possible SRGDNS combinations.
#8 deva-gandhari? for diva and gandhari??

4. Disfigured grandmaster separates 1 from 11
kannaDa (Chess grandmaster anand is bit disfigured anAnd in kannaDa, seperates 1 from 11 is the letter a from k(1st and 11th position).)

8. A star lies between an Israeli princess and an Indian beauty
Jan A rAnjani (I do know janus is a Princess and star too, ranjani means pleasant may also indirectly mean beauty)

9. Centerless shankarAbharanam
HamsaDhvani (hamsadhwani does not have madhyamam and hence it is centerless shankarAbharanam)

rajeshnat got # 4 correct

Good atttempt keerthi!!!

Solutions for the remaining ones:

4. Disfigured grandmaster separates 1 from 11 - kannadA - Exactly as rajeshnat explained

8. A star lies between an Israeli princess and an Indian beauty - saraswathi manOhari - sArA (for princess in Hebrew, the official language of Israel) + swAthi (a star) + manOhari (means beauty from the root word manoharam)

9. Centerless shankarAbharanam - sUranandini - shankarAbharanam without madhyamam (S R2 G3 P D2 N3 S; S N3 D2 P G3 R2 S)

Thanks again for all your participation :)

Yes , I think janus is a king (not queen, some body can correct me ), this is a great one. I thought the answer is something ending with manOhari or ranjani, though not sure which one means beauty. In any case swathi meaning star is something I would have not connected.

shadjam,
this is top notch , even if you give a year we all would have not got it. This rAga was never in my radar .

I am sure the participation would have been much more had it not been for the deluge of posts because of kutcheri season , because of your quiz I have piled few backlogs. keep them coming next time take melakartha #22(as this has the maximum janyas) , give us a month time for solving the quiz .

Shadjam, this was like madurai mani tAra sthaYi shadjam at its best. :)
We have to thank you twice :) :)

shadjm,
very nice one; unfortunately I saw it very late and by that time most of them were solved;
I could guess that 9 was ShankarAbharaNam minus madhyamam- but id not know the name 'sUranandini'.
Keep them coming.
