I listened to this raga for the first time 3 days back and I've been totally fascinated by it. I listened to a 31-minute rendition by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and I cannot have enough of it. I'm looking for renditions by Pt. Omkarnath Thakur or Pt. Jasraj.
I'm trying to relate more to the raga. Can someone tell me if the following songs are close to Jog?
1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aKwLLpH ... re=related (Ignore the video)
2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rXcdcDB2S8
3) Inru poi naalai va from Sampoorna Ramayanam (Cannot find the link now)

Re: Raga Jog
Listening to this raaga, as played by Shri MSG Sir in an Radio Sammelan, I have to agree with Gobi sir that this goes more like Tilang rather than "chalanattai/nattai" as suggested by various people in various forums. Could some one ( Lakshman sir ?) throw more light on this?

Re: Raga Jog
Information from Raganidhi:
Jog (bilaval thATh): Jog of bilAval thATh is a shadava/sampurna raga. The scale is:
*n s g g m p m g p d n p s* - s* n d p d n p g m m r s
SvarAs used are all shuddha svarAs of hindustani sangit. Vadi is ga and samvadi is ni. This raga is considered to be a mixture of nand, behag, hamir and nat ragas.
Chalan of this type of jog is: *n s g g m p g p g g m r s p p s* n d p p d n p g g m r s
In this raga tIvra madhyam is not used although in nand and hamir ragas it is used. This type of jog is not popular.
Jog (khamAj thATh): This type has become very popular in recent years. This one is an audava/audava raga. Svaras r and d are omitted in both Aroha and avaroha. Scale is:
s g m p n s - s n^ p m g m g s g^ s
both komal and tivra ga are used. Shuddha ma, both komal and tivra ni and only tivra ga is used in Aroha. In avaroha komal ni is used.
Diagnostic svara pattern is:
s g m p n s* - p n^ aa p g m g aa s g^ aa s
Vadi is ga and samvadi s*. In this raga the svara groups s* n p m g and s g^ aa s wit the komal ga elongated and brought out in meeND soun very beautiful at the end. Some think that this type of Jog is Bhimpalas in Aroha and tilang in avaroha. Some others think that this raga is hamsakinkini with the svaroop of Pilu. This raga is sung during the first prahara of the night.
Hope it helps.

Hi sripathi, you wrote on 23.1.2009 (long time ago!)

Did you listen to Bhimsen Joshi's Jog on Music Today CD A01041 (33 minutes). I agree it is a superb rendition of this raga by the great Bhimsen Ji
I don't have Jasraj's Jog sung by him alone. But I have his version, a kind of Jugalbandhi with Hariprasad Chaursia on flute 98 minutes on Navras CDs NR018/19. I don't particularly enjoy this but then I am not a musician!
For your information I have several Jog recordings both vocal and instrumental. The VOCAL recordings I have are as follows. Not all these are recommended. For further information email kantidattani@aol.com - I am not in music business and don't sell CDs.
Ajoy Chakrabarty 27 minutes CD SWM018
Ashwini Bhide 17 FMR014
Bhimsen Joshi 33 A01041
Girija Devi 11 05323-2 - 26 amcd023@ - 38 SWM004
Jasraj with Hariprasad Chaurasia on flute 98 NR018/19
Parween Sultana and Dilshad 10 B6748
Parween Sultana 40 FMR28
Purbayan Chatterjee 29 SWM017
Rashid Khan 30 MCD187
Rattan Sharma 26 BIS26 - 21 TDICL034C
Uday Bhawalkar 17 NR058
Veena Sahasrabuddhe 30 A01015

Manose Singh on the Bansuri
and todays delight...

Gopal Kishan on the Been ... Magnificent track. Longish one from a concert.
BTW this is a raga that fascinates Maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman , immensely .
Watch how the swaras drop from great heights , just like that Jog Falls , He once urged me . And kept singing it for about 20 minutes.
Fascinating Raga

Pt. V. G. Jog has a very beautiful raag jog. I think it is about an hour long piece, if I recall.
some excerpts, ZH tabla matching the maestro - some memorable stuff in part 2:
