KS Vishnudev Nambuthiri is certainly a very thoughtful and brilliant musician . He is from kerala and then came to Chennai for advanced training to learn under the great departed guru PS Narayanaswami. I am just noticing as i write this review 4 concerts inclusive of this are all PSN direct or second generation sishyas.

Vishnudev musical trajectory and ideas certainly have a firm semmangudi ideas especially when there is a trajectory of swaras and neraval . Certainly certain shades of some greats like say KVN/Ramnad krishnan is also there for me . His voice is very engaging with he being very thoughtful not to overdo and strain it which at times is the only key learning that many musicians of his age donot get it .

I came few minutes late , i hate to be late that too when the Parampara is a ssi typecast. I was wondering as i climbed the stairs of NGS Mini, where did i would miss say deva deva or will he go to a submain raga start like his paramaguru SSI , i was assmuming he may do that as the sabha is a top big 5 sabha and usually musicians squeeze a RTP too.

All my predictions turned out right , as i went late and i also started hearing a Kharaharapriya snippet of anupallavi of ganapathiye of thamizh thyagaraja the Semmangudi typecast was indeed rolling with Kharaharapriya .Kutcheri kalaikattified right there with some cute returns by USA based kamalakiran vinjamuri. Both the percussionist were at ease and well settled .At times there is joy in taking a weighty krithi and not wasting time with warmups right that too if it is just 2 hours non nirvana concert

I thought KHP being gone , may be he will race with few fillers and go to main and possibly SHort RTP being a 2 hour concert . But hooray deva deva kalayAmithE also came , this krithi and neraval (i wish there was also swaras ) is a series of full tosses for both the percussionists and violinist . Vishnu sang very well and i noticed certain ideas like KVN in the sense not always as racy as semmangudi , little more thoughtful nidhana sangathis helped Maaaya maalava gowlai to magically glow more

Kalyani was the main. Alapana was nice with perhaps longish violin return. Nice pidis with a meditative splash and then briga podi sangathis like semmangudi was well done. Two neravals was a nice improvisation , i am assuming MDR was the first to do such a thing in concert . THe swaras in Kalyani did not have that intense finish , possibly two neravals did strain the voice .

Then a short but well executed RTP in bhAgeshri unfolded. Taanam and alapana was not too detailed but he did flesh out enough to make me feel satisfied . Pallavi neraval had a long purvangam and i am assuming just one key word namostuthe for uttarangam. Swaras were all short and well laid out with very different rhythmic patterns and I think he took in different nadais . The last sindhubhairavi krithi was surajananda krithi and he sang very well .

The violinist kamalakiran was in top form , he could have made the main alapana bit censored. Sumesh was fantastic and sunil paired with him very well. Sumesh gives lot of patterns , they could have given say 4 mins less to tani and may be another 3 mins from violinist say keeping kalyani crisper , if that time was allotted to RTP would have been a notch higher concert .

All said Vishnudev has a lot of paddhantara suddham and at the same time there is quite a lot of his own creativity. HE is surely an intense Carnatic and not a fusion oriented musician .

Note:
Atlast in this concert i saw the first NRI , that is roughly after 9 concerts or so. I saw Meenakshi who shares photographs from Cleveland team. She misses Arasi this year, she continues to hop many concerts every day. Very nice to see the sort of patronage that is dwindling with many NRI's . we both had a brief chat post VIshnudev concert , she also for sure enjoyed Vishnudev concert

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours
