The joy of hearing a concert going for close to 2 hours and 45 mins with sacrifice by percussionist giving a tani for just 10 minutes gives some definite outcome. That is one detailed RTP . Vidushis Ranjani and Gayatri are phenomenal marketers say along with Sanjay Subrahmanyan are leading the pack of crowd pullers . May be there is also Abhishek Raghuram , certainly he does not seem to market that much or may be he has left it to some team behind the scenes , all said these 3 musicians are the biggest draw of CM (i dont know who is 1 , 2 and 3 , but they are top three).
Personally i have noticed in my extended family i always see say 5 out of 100 taking up Carnatic music in sabhas during December , Very likely i see them in raga concert , yesterday i saw a little distant relative from continental usa who has
travelled to india asking me do you listen to CM . i said sheepishly like a tambura personality yes i do in recent years. That continental usa person couple asked me to listen more and they said they are glad i am listening .
Moving on Raga sisters started with a nice pAsuram in thamizh . Nattai never disappoints with the start and certainly it was engaging may be bit more Kalpana swaras i would have liked but that did not happen. Ranjani usually takes submain and it was valaci , i felt ranjani could have fleshed with little more raga swaroopam of valaci , could spot a bit of repetition of ideas . with a short return in valaci looked valaci appeared as a bit Mumbai bhel poori . However the character of valaci changed intensely with HMB krithi. Lovely presentation especially the detailed neraval , with gayatri voice that usually soars easily as a team they did very well. Swaras were also well done in valaci
The contrast of saramathi with the anupallavi start and mokshamu galada is a sure kalaikattufying krithi. What a joy that brings to all in the audience , almost 10 of them start singing few lines , thank god it did not disturb saramathi of the most qualified pristine vocalist .
Pantuvarali was indeed only pantuvarali . quite a few said next to me said poorvikalyani, illa madam this is only pantuvarali was my reply . Madam's husband confused more the madam saying at one point subha pantuvarali . As the alapana progressed there was consensus it was only pantuvarali. To the best of my knowledge i have neither heard or even saw in print this krithi of Mysore vasudevacharya. MV krithis or some times JCW krithis some times has a liberal words of 2 trinities T and SS and indeed this krithi had a touch of quite a few phrases of sadguru thyagraja and shyamasastri. When pantuvarali did not have a neraval , and when they went to swaras , i knew hooray there is going to be a detailed RTP , any way this is a big sabha too... Swaras of pantuvarali had few pockets of gayatri musical expressions that were aesthetic.
The key to the treasure happened at the end of pantuvarali when both the percussionist played with right aggression and just wrapped the tani in 10 mins. Kudos to them. Gambeera vani filler was a filler to filler as it was only krithi skeleton.
THe RTP was in a rare ragam sAlagabhairavi . I dont know if there is any krithi other than padavini . This ragam is child of Kharaharapriya so lot of contours where the child appears so much like the parent . What a parent Kharaharapriya is , that has the most assorted and lovely children. Raga alapana was started in mid lower register by ranjani and she did well. Charu played crisply and then gayatri took it over . She sang very well and segued steadily to neat and crisp madhyamakaala taanam. WEll done .
The Pallavi lines were lifted significantly from the sadguru krithi and there was a nice tight rhythm to it , it did not excessively go with too much word somersault . Musically the Pallavi and swaras were nice. I think ranjani sang suddasarang ?? and then gayatri did what she called in microphone as jugalbandhi of ravichandrika and rakeshri . Gayatri has the grace to present with nice Sruthi suddham and there is also lot of akaaram like phrases , so all those phrases keeps audience more glued. I personally heard more of only ravichandrika and some slant of Hindustani rakeshri . Rakeshri was quite noticeable in early part but not much in later half . Tis swara maliga of ravichandrika and rakeshri was very long . They both traced the anchor salaga bhairavi and wrapped a long 53 mins Pallavi
Thanks thanks to tani not being 20 plus mins . There was a lovely pasuram . Was the first ragam chakravakham/ahir bhairav/ bindumalini /nattaikurinji . My mind was not able to map it perfectly , i would not say they sang without perfection . At times it just happens . Then the mohanam was lovely in words . The last sindhu bhairavi was well done , i was thinking with so many rama rama phrases is that going to end with Ramachandra prabho krithi in sindhubhairavi . What a surprise i heard an extraordinary krithi of a great vidwan who is also a great vaggeyakkara the one and only MDR . Phrase in Pallavi itself has so many words to musically ornament. MDR vaggeyakkara is a treasure and Raga sisters indeed gave a special gift
The last abhang was a bang in my ears. Aruna Sairam used that as a big crowd puller final drop in 1990s and 2002 , the Mumbai arunA varisu RagA did the same and now many are doing the same . I think in abhang suddenly the mrudangam becomes a dholak and the concert becomes a radha kalyana mahotsavam . Great for many , but not for me . I like very few abhangs , one of that is one megh malhar that once ragasang , this durga was ok in parts to me.
VIdushi Charumathi showed her best when she replied so beautifully in ravichandrika /rakeshri return. HEr azhuttam did give in at few places in pantuvarali but that was just very very few places that had a bit of caving. Charumathi is surely a star in the making . Sai Giridhar has a lot of overlap with Patri satish , he plays with extremely high responsive quotient . FOr eg gambeera vani krithi was played so well with that speed even the absence of swaras was hardly noticed by me. Ghatam krishna is grooming very well and he indeed did so well at times he is creating a bit of magic during course of song like ghatam Karthik with some effortless one finger taps.
All said when i am at times losing motivation to hear CM due to reduced concert time , vanimahal with raga-charu did magic, the main magician is the two percussionist who gave a crisp tani for 10 mins , the joy of long RTP and also a ragamaliga long viruththam is usually Exclusive OR case not an AND Case. Vanimahal is giving better music than say NGS or Music Academy as it is 2 hours and 45 mins . Do the same for every evening 2 artists please (I am writing this as i do know few office bearers in vanimahal will read and i know very few of them in private)
Overall an excellent to outstanding concert for 2 hours and 45 mins

RaGA sisters, or any other musician rarely gets a detailed and engaging review such this one! You seated us there in the concert with you and the family?? (I do know that the sisters are favored by them).
Your US relatives don't read Rasikas.org reviews for sure, let alone know your fervor for CM
If the concert was a sparkler, your review made me sit in the Sabha where I had sat many times as a youngster and in the past decades, me and K as senior citizens. I do take you for granted at times (as your mother!) but you stand out among us as someone who holds CM close to his heart.
