It was an exact 3 hours concert and as usual suryaprakash never sagged .The joy of intense classicism was always there and there was no feeling of lightness/fusion/dilution/television touch in this concert. I went few minutes late heard the line vArana vadanam vandeham was sung from pallavi part of the krithi in rolling speed . I do know in the recent season he had an exclusive mannargudi sambasiva bhagavathar composition concert in vidwath samajam , I could not go then . I have never heard other than one tukkada of this sambasiva bhagavathar (neeraja dhala in maand)and it was wonderful to hear a near submain like song . For those uninitiated ,aurally i had an overlap of this mannargudi sambasiva bhagavathar with the arresting speed of vishwanatha iyer singing a pantuvarali. Pantuvarali is a lovely start and the symmetry of swaras gives an energetic finish and most importantly the percussion gets going from there on. He announced the composer otherwise I would have not known.

The #2 drop in Arabi is always lovely. It was a fine alapana sung with so much of nadaswara pidi sangathis and a lovely jutamurAre was sung , i liked both the neraval and swaras in arabi and overall it was well presented . The darbar raga demands weight and he sang a very rare W V B krithi and it was well done.

What a spectacular bhavani raga , everything oozed with richness of carnatic aroma . bhavani is certainly tricky raga and he sang beautifully this kalyani varadarajan krithi.I aurally noticed in this entire song he had the cuts of the omnipresent sunaada vinodhan Tanjore s kalyanaraman in it. Suryaprakash announced the composer was kalyani varadarajan and the composer's son just got up and acknowledged . I personally enjoyed this kalyani varadarajan krithi and bhavani raga the most .I have not heard bhavani with so much depth.

The vilambit was lovely with a intense neraval and at the end MC said ithu thaan dikshitar brindavana saranga . THe narayana gowlai kadalE vaadu was well done with a bit shortened swaras . The main was the grand stormbOdhi and the alapana was well done . I was visually enjoying with my feet(charanam ) tapped as I was mentally engrossed and took refuge (saranam)in KAmbODhi raga devatai .

THe pallavi was short surely but the contextual pallavi line was certainly wonderful. NO one coins pallavi lines like him and it was superb - had a plan to go to my native town kumbakonam side but had to settle with the dwijavanthi pallavi - ganga cauvery yamunA theera vihAri paapahaari . In the swara ragamaliga return darbari was superb where MC gave a reply connecting few lines of marudha malai mA maniyE of madurai somu fame . The tukkadas were just one (short virutham and follow up song in ragEshri) and I am not complaining .

Chandru mama played beautifully during alapana and he was exactly reproducing suryaprakash manOdharma patterns . I particularly liked his bhavani return the most.During songs the alacrity was definitely caught with his age .His trademark azhuttam was always there during the returns. Shertalai ananthakrishnan taps were in line with the singer and his overall volume was always in the right zone . S Venkaramanan played with grace and he always follows a pattern of watching a longer duration during the first few songs but he really takes it over when needed . In tani he showed his class

May be on the shortfall side ,if there was a bit more elaboration in taanam / pallavi and little more swaras in KAmbOdhi i would have enjoyed it more. It was 9pm hard stop at mylapore (bomb scare in chennai at 9pm), glad at least the concert started at 6pm start.

Overall an excellent concert for 3 hours

I am amazed at Sri MC's energy and enthusiasm at his age.
Suryaprakash is indeed fortunate to have such a great vidwan who has played with his guru TVS and his guru MMI accompany him on this occasion.

I have not heard of the composer of the bhavani kriti. I would appreciate any information re: her. Thanks.

rajeshnat: I have this song listed under Madurai Somu also since there was no way to authenticate the composer. Some songs by Jesudas also fall under this category but I don't think he is a composer.
Mahavishnu: Kalyani Varadarajan's son gave me a booklet of her compositions some years ago at the Cleveland festival. I will look for the booklet and see if there is any info about her.

NinaikAdha neramilai - let us keep it to madurai somu which was sung in this concert

I put vaali or madurai somu , I remember for the song nAlai enru oRu Naal for which recently you educated us the composer is vaali.

I have known Suryaprakash's concert to be explosive!

One night, at BVB, near the end of his program, there was a huge clap of thunder, of the sort that tells one that the strike is too close for comfort. Mylapore South Mada Street was almost blocked by the fallen tree. Had the concert been of less duration, who knows, our car might have been underneath it!

I finally managed to get hold of the booklet of Vali's compositions. The raga of the song kUvi azhaittAl kural koDuppAn is listed as udayaravicandrilA. The song may have been re-tuned, in valaji, by MLV who popularized it.
The song nALai enroru nAL is not in this booklet.

Koovi azhaitaal is also sung and popularized by Tanjore S Kalyanaraman. There could be a possibility of may be even SKR could have tuned or may be you are right MLV amma tuned it (i am heading bit more in SKR direction). There is some video youtube i heard where he Vaali says AutoParts Kalyanam or some thing- I think SKR is known to be a dealer or something where he did some automobile rent or sold some components

I have understood kavignar vaali more and more in the last 5 years as i was doing lot of analysis of lot of songs when he did with Illayaraja. Vaali is truly a phenom, at times he blurs like kannadasan and at times he blurs like a papanasam sivan -I wish more songs are taken into CM

You put some time back naalai enru oru naal as vaali, now if it is not in this booklet , possibly we have to put in future naali enru oru naal as Vaali?? or madurai Somu???
