It would be great to have some discussions on this refined and beautiful rAgA of our music. tyAgarAjA has composed some beautiful pieces: smaraNEsukhamu, viDajAladurA nA manavi, and the comparatively more introspective naDADina mATa set in a lovely gait in misra CApu. There is one SS krithi in this rAgA - interestingly MD has not handled it while he has composed two beautiful krithis in janaranjani's close cousin, pUrNaCandrika [where SS has not composed - too confusing :-)].

Another great krithi is of course the evergreen pAhimAm sri rAjarAjESwari of mahA vaidyanAtha Sivan which has a lovely CiTTa swaram and the rAgA mudra incorporated in the krithi. HMB's krithi on Lord Ganesha [ganapatE suguNanidhE] is nice and Sri TNS renders it frequently with a very interesting CiTTa swaram. Not too familiar with the output of more recent composers, but IIRC Sri MDR has composed a krithi [pAda yugamu?] in this.

Janaranani retains a distinct melodic individuality from pUrNaCandrikA due to the SDPM in the avarOhaNA as well as the PDPNS in the ArOhaNA. It also seems to lend itself a trifle more to slower tempo exploration as compared to pUrNaCandrika, nADADina mATa being a case in point. It also seems to have been explored more in terms of AlApanA in recent times; Sanjay renders it frequently and TMK has sung a nice RTP suite. While Semmangudi Iyerval used to render smaraNE sukhamu, I haven't heard an AlApanA. Somehow this would seem to be right up Ramnad Krishnan's alley - perhaps someone will show me the path? :-)

Some questions:

1. Have the composers who followed tyAgarAjA [pUCi, paTnam, walahjapET etc] handled this rAgA?
2. Are there 2-kaLai chaukam compositions in this?

A difficult rAgA requiring good creativity both in terms of ideas and 'cohesiveness' to pull together an AlApanA without being too repetitive; kind of a diamond in the rough, if I may. Would love to see more discussion on janaranjani.

Absolutely true Coolkarni Sir. A lovely AlApanA with extensive ideas, and a very nice and relaxed rendition of viDajAladurA which is usually treated in a much faster tempo as an opener or filler piece. Thanks for sharing this. Brilliant stuff.

speaking of Balachandar, as he gets to the kriti, he gets even better, the song gains a new stature and his swarams speak volumes!

The kriti is viDajAladurA and not vadajalathura  as mentioned in the site

Have a look at this page. There is a discussion not directly about janaranjani but about pUrNacandrike. It could help.

A janaranjani kRti of oDeyar was also discussed in the old thread- kAmAkShi pAhimAm in rUpaka tALa. The thread is being resurrected and will come up soon. You may look it up to for a brief discussion on janaranjani.

Here I have uploded the oDeyar kRti. A short, brisk and lilting kRti nicely rendered by
P.Rama & R.Chandrika

Very useful indeed Dr. Shrikaanth. The pUrNacandrikA conundrum is one that has been puzzling me for a while, and your post was helpful. I also enjoyed your krithi, with a nice setup in khaNDa CApu - common krithis in pUrNaCandrikA are all in Adi or rUpakA so this was very refreshing.

The oDEyAr kriti is short and sweet and the CaraNa madhyamakAla has a very arresting and dramatic effect.

Coolkarni Sir: is there a recording of Nedunuri Garu singing a krithi or AlApanA?

Chembai has rendered Srita janaranjani in janaranajani . Any idea whose composition that is? Lyrics will be nice if someone could post.

you can try and guess the artist's name too.
Twenty years ago I had the privilege of having him visit my bachelors quarters and join Thanjavur Sankara Iyer for Dharwar Meals that My Mom would cook for them- there used to be some glorious music that was passed around too .Memorable evenings !!

Kulkarniji-

RTP in Poornachandrika sounds tantalising, to say the least! Also, I have heard that LGJ once played a Janaranjani RTP at (I think) KGS sometime in the 70's. Any chance of getting that? : )

It was interesting...very western style.

venkat ,
your gift is in the TRS thread.
elaborate yes , but he picks up real steam only at the neraval stage.
Anyway with this raga , it is the second half of renderings that always takes me soaring !!
