The Melakartha ragas appear to closely follow the octal system of computing. I have given below the ascending order octal sequences. Some of the combinations do not have a corresponding melakartha raga associated, indicated by (blank). Can anyone throw light on this and if there are ragas with these swara sequence. If there are any errors in the melakartha raga sequence given below, I will stand corrected.

asarmaji,
As for blanks are concerned, excepting 6 - 87 and 7 - 88, all are corresponding. Is it correct?

The corrected version is :

4 Nil (blank) 1 1 2 1 -----> 1 1 2 2
6 Nil (blank) 1 1 2 3 .......> 1 1 3 2

you may try now.

The amended sequence is not in appropriate order. Kindly update the original post

PS : Octal number system has 0-7 digits with 8 as base.

I have used octal base 1 (3 power 1 to 3) instead of base 0 (3 power of 0 to 2) as r1, r2, r3 etc. will look and mean better than r0, r1 and 2 etc. Any views. I think 4 and 6 are in the octal order unless I am missing out something.

Asarma,

the value of your work could be enhanced if you could possibly add some history? I mean could you write what scholars/scriptures say when this system came into vogue. Since it was not there from the beginning, but was invented at a certain point of time, it would make sense to add such statement for better understanding.

Dear asarma,

The reason the 'blanks', as you have indicated in your octal listing, do not have a melakarta or for that matter any raga associated is that certain basic relationship rules need to be followed within each of the pairs (r,g) and (d,n). All these rules arise since the solfa syllables s,r,g,m,p,d,n have to form a strictly monotically ascending sequence in terms of their positional-pitches in the 12 semitone scale. This 12 semitone scale in terms of ascending positional pitch positions as an ordered set, members separated by commas, is {s,r1,r2 (same as g1),g2 (same as r3), g3, m1, m2, p, d1, d2 (same as n1), n2 (same as d3), n3}

If r takes the index 1, g can be any of 1, 2 or 3
If r takes the index 2, g can be any of 2 or 3.
If r takes the index 3, g can be only 3.

The same relationships have to hold between d and n.

If we take the example of the 'blank' just under ganamurti in your post #1, the 'blank' has d2 and n1 -- this results in the same position for d and n in the 12 semitone scale due to the way the d2 and n1 are defined on the 12 semitone scale which violates the monotonicity principle. If you take the example of the first 'blank' just under kokilapriya, the 'blank' has d3 and n1 -- this results in a greater positional-pitch for d in the 12 semitone scale than n - again a violation of the monotonicity principle.

Also, please note -- manavati has to have (1,1,2,3) for (r,g,d,n) instead of what you have indicated. I have not checked the list exhaustively - this just caught my eye.

thanks sr_iyer, II really appreciate the leangth you have gone to explain the reasons for the missing sequences and the monotonicity principle. One cannot see this off hand without an analytical explanation such as the one you have given. Thanks for the same.
