Nidhi: a pocket companion for the concert-going rasika

Post by MadChapu »

Dear rasikas,

A familiar composition begins at a concert, but you can’t quite place the ragam or composer. Or you’d like to follow along with the sahityam. I built Nidhi for when you find yourself in such a moment. And for the curiosity that carries on after the kutcheri.

Built on @ranjanimalavi's wonderful Carnatic music database, Nidhi focuses on the composition database, with particular attention to a fast app, clean interface, Dravidian/Devanagari friendly ISO 15919 transliteration, easy navigation, flexible search, and smooth, polished visuals. It doesn’t include YouTube links; the emphasis is on making the musical reference library a pleasure to explore.

Browse 10,000+ compositions, find lyrics for around 6,500 in six scripts, and move easily between a composition, its ragam, and its composer’s other works. Search accommodates spelling variations, and downloading your preferred lyric language database beforehand keeps the library handy even when you lack connectivity at a concert hall.

Use it in your browser or install the Android app on your phone. No account needed.

Try it out before your next concert: https://nidhiapp.pages.dev

Many thanks to @ranjanimalavi for the database that makes this possible, and to all the original sources of lyrics, and of course to AI which was used to create the website and app. Feedback, corrections, and suggestions from fellow rasikas are welcome!
