Re: Two Bharata Ratnas : Lata and MSS
This is a rarely heard tune from the MS Hiindi version of Meera.1947
This duet is sung by Smt.MS and Naagaiah's own voice. Perhaps, we lost a very good play-back singer in Naagaiah. He shoould have been used more often.
-
What is the raagam ? In each stanza, Smt.MS sings the high-octave notes. Thrilling voice.
-
The scene is as follows.
-
The RANA visits during the pooja and Meerabai expresses her dearest wish to build a beautiful temple for her Giridhari. And the RANA grants her wish and a lovely temple is built just near the Palace for Lord Giridhaari.
Here is a great tune sung by RANA and Meerabai , exuberant that Giridhari will be coming to their place.

RSR,
Of course. His Tyagayya songs and the ChakradhAri ones like: unakkum enakkum enna poruthamaiyA, un pOl en kaiyilum chakkaram suzhaludu pAr speak of his soothing voice which also had a soft sway.
At the same time, listening to MSS singing here with him shows how rich and well-chiselled her voice is, even in those early years.

Madam, Yes. The Thyagaiah film and its so many songs of Thayagaraja Swami sung by Naagaiah have been discussed in this forum. --favourably. He had a nice voice.
Smt MS song given here is in 1947. She was 31 then and in the zenith of her voice quality, and all-india reach and fame. - partly due to her bajan records. She already had about 15 years of concert experience . The peak was around 1952. After that, (after the untimely demise of Kalki), she gave very few plates . We have lost her golden period concerts from 1940 to 1955.-irrevocably. She was never the same after 1955. - may be more orthodox in her repertoire but in trying to win approval from 'pundits', she sacrificed her soaring spontaneity .

ungalukku vEnavum veNum VEnDavum vENDaam. Want the cake and eat it too. Why one has to seek the recognition of pundits? Nehruvian India eh? Common wealths (samasthaanams!) getting eroded, the word pundit entered the English dictionary too! They were the new anglicised pundits too! Blame your hero not the pundits!

Smt MS renders the wonderful and famous Purandaradasa kruthi in HM Kapi.
https://youtu.be/C8zfi5c6bYw
This should have been around 1960.
DD concert ? accompanied by Smt.Radha Viswanathan.
This is a RARE live (visual -video) of the comparatively early decade.

The time stamp where you find the lapse?!!
And what is pragyaigal ?
This thread has become over time an exclusive RSR and Arasi thread to emphasize the truism "old is the only gold" and you are raining the parade.
I used to pick ONE Bharat Ratna - MS and listen. RSR gave links to some of the rarest songs.

https://youtu.be/C8zfi5c6bYw?t=43 - not a lapse. Just a time lapse for us - ksheenamaayuh kshanE kshanE - lifetime moves without knowing these. See how it lands in parts. All melody buffs will scoff at such splits. SrI TKM all he does maintains the tEkka none else. It lands with verve, yet subtle.
I am not raining the parade. Rather adding a trumpet of my own.
If kApi is soulful that is golden. And a nightingale's voice , that is golden. Yet as generations move, even this voice may fall out of favor - just like many ucca staayi voices of 78 rpm fame. manasu kallAnal enna seyvadu? This verve will save the day and is indeed timeless! That is not immediately easy to see , but it will be there.

Re: Two Bharata Ratnas : Lata and MSS
That is not all about this immortal rendition. The theme of the song, and the deep philosophical and sublime ' wonderment' and tribute to the mother's love' -foster mother though she is -unknown to herself. and the lucid language and poetry , for people who know that language.kApi is soulful that is golden. And a nightingale's voice , that is golden. Yet as generations move, even this voice may fall out of favor - just like many ucca staayi voices of 78 rpm fame. manasu kallAnal enna seyvadu?
Saahithyam is equally important, in some instances.
-
The voice will never fall out of favour ever- unless they have 'irumbuch chevi'. The young generation is re-discovering' the treasures.

Welcome back GM ( @ganesh_mourthy .
So glad that you found here some old gems , not found in the later concert circuit. That is the purpose of this thread. Gratified. Thank you.

sAhityam is not just it's decipherment and understanding. It is Sabdam of the vaRnas, candas, viSramams, dhIrgas, hrasvas, vallinams and mellinams and saamam. Any Bharatiya in this sense relates to all languages of this land. If you don't agree, I just have to say your kannada is not my kannada.
Just like your ( an English man's or those who think like the English men) English is not my English. English for me is one of the languages of sacrifice of our freedom fighters ( I see it in yagna bhavam).
So I give more , much more importance to sAhityam than you just did!

Never spoke a truer word. !English for me is one of the languages of sacrifice of our freedom fighters ( I see it in yagna bhavam).
'Yagnya', was indeed 'slaughtering' and offering to gods- So, we sacrifice our freedom fighters!..?
'sacrifice' is 'thyaagam'- giving up. for a nobler cause. Our freedom fighters did not 'sacrifice' English, by slaughtering.
-
saahithyam is above all, the theme , lyrics and poetic excellence and imagery. .. not mere word-play
It can never be experienced by non-native speakers.
-
Here we go again !

.
There are many Indians even today, who speak and write chaste English, with least effort, (like sankark and arasi madam ).
.
Vocabulary and pronunciation contests are routinely won by diaspora children in USA
. In UK they have removed the Bard's plays from the syllabus but it is a must in Indian colleges and even schools.
It has got nothing to do with any group as such but with exceptional individuals in all countries , who have the open mind, diligence, equipment and monumental capacity for hard work .
It is already being said that Chinese students are becoming experts in Western Classical music and it may be that there are Indians too who are fast catching up.
.
That said, the all-round perfection of Smt.MS rendering 'vadavaraiyai' can never be fully appreciated by anyone, even Indians, even Tamils, unless they have a background in so many things like ancient tamil literature, vaishnavam, raga system, and orchestration.
Even now, why that particular immortal poem ,repeatedly, extols the role of the Lord in attempting the negotiation of peace , is really intriguing and sublime.
Third stanza -
(Hindolam) "Nadantha adi, panchavarkku thoothaaka Nadanth adi"
நடந்த அடி ,பஞ்சவர்க்கு தூதாக நடந்த அடி
-,
Sixth stanza-Kaapi
"pancchavarku thoothu Nadanthaanai '

It is amazing to note that sanskrit lexicons, translations with commentary, of vedas, upanishads, smruthis, puraanaas, ithihaasams, and ather sanskrit works have been the great contribution of European scholars. This is irrefutable. That applies to South Indian languages too.I know more about you than yourself" attitude!

you mean 'start l ing' .Oh! it is starting
? ...Not at all. Human sacrifice was (?) very common in primitive societies all over the world.
On a lighter vein, the current practice of tonsuring in some temples, is considered a substitute for removing the head itself. I think, there is a story in Periya puraaNam, about 'piLLaik kaRi' .
A wiki search for translations and translators for vedas, upanishads, dharma saastras, smruthis, epics, puraanaas, later sanskrit literature, lexicons, will be highly educative.

i think, 'rhyming' in the beginning word of ines in the lyrics (unlike in English, where it occurs at the end of the line) is a specialty of Thamizh poetry . All the poems in later-sangam and post-sangam period revel in that. ( around 200 AD).
There are very few poems in Thamizh for nearly 2000 years now, which do not have this feature. They would be rare .
But to find such rhymimg type in Sanskrit is equally rare.!
-
I may be wrong but neither SANSKRIT nor the other south-indian languages closely related to Sanskrit, have this essential rhyming in the beginning of the lines.......atleast alternate lines.

RSR,
This was perhaps one of the last movies I saw before moving abroad--and didn't hear the song again even when I started listening to old movie songs later by way of tapes. I remember Sandhya's pouty face as she pranced around to convey the 'jAo jAo' mood! Lovely singing by Lata...except at the end when her singing the jAo jAo has an uncharacteristic touch??

Madam, The song is from Rungoli,
.Vyjayanthi dances to this tune. .
.It was all so long back ..though comparatively recent for the 1950 fans of Lata-ji
It is a wonder that you still remember the tune. Thank you.

I really goofed
I can see why Sandhya came to mind! All right, before Navrang, she had danced (sort of!) in Jhanak Jhanak pAyal bhAjE to the song 'saiyAn jAo jAo mujhsE na bOlO--the very first technicolor film jh jh pAyal BhAjE directed by Shantharam. The same kind of mood is conveyed in that song too.
The Rungoli one jAo jAo with Vyjayanthimala is in black and white, I guess...

Madam, Yes. Rungoli was in B&W and unlike the dance 'alaaripu' in NewDelhi, (prelude to 'muraLI bairan song)it was not particularly, good.
-
Recently, I viewed a video interview by Ingrid Begman,(1915-1984) almost exact contemporary of Smt.Indira, (striking resemblance , especially
in 1970-1984)where she has succinctly pointed out why the film is a better media than the 'theater' stage .and why she chose a film career.

O Lord, keep me as your servant
I shall be your servant and tend a garden for you.
Everyday, I shall wake up and get to see you.
--
In the bowers and lanes of Brindavan,
I shall sing of your divine pranks
2
This cowherd, with beautiful coiffure ,
adorned with a crown of peacock feathers,
and clad in yellow garments,
with garland of 'vaijayanthi' flowers, around his neck,
playing sweet tunes in his flute,
grazes the cattle.

3
The Yogi comes to practise Yoga
while the ascetic comes to practise austerities
The devotee comes here to sing the praises of Krishna
All of them are residents of Brindavan
-
4
Oh my tranquil and majestic Lord i!
Reside in my heart O brave one!
-
In the middle of the night
on the banks of Yamuna, the river of affection
, the Lord gave me a vision .
