Mudhra has earned a fame for bringing many innovations in the concert format over the last twenty five years. One of their flagship programme is the Four Hour concert. True, Some other organisations have got inspired and are doing Four Hour concert- though very sporadically. Many vidwans do welcome this format and give a concert exceeding four hours with enthusiasm and zeal. They feel their manodharmam can be exhibited without any threat of time over run and this year, the new studio and its state of the art acoustics have contributed in a large measure to the wholesomeness of the concert of T.N.S. Krishna which has lasted for more than four and a half hours. The entire team needs to be complemented for their stamina and dedication. And Mudhra needs to be congratulated for sticking to this format even in this virtual music festival. In this context it may be remembered that Maestro T.N.Seshagopalan has sung many four hour concerts for Mudhra in the past.

After the grand Ata tala varnam in Ritigowla, Krishna sang the Devagandhari piece in a meditative manner setting the stage for a grand feast to follow. Alapana of Shanmugapriya (Chamaram) and the kriti on Vinayaka with its imaginative swarams at an unusual eduppu Paasaankusadharam with laya intricacies thrown in intelligently raised the bar of the concert. The breathtaking korvai at the end was executed with precision. A slokam from Meenakshi Pancharathnam in the place of a raga alapana seamlessly merged into Mariveregati which infused admirable visranti in the concert. Elaborate swarams added colour to the rendering. The sowkyam element continued with the Varali Pancharathnam.

Tunai Purindarul with its abundant rapid fire swarams brought a verve in the concert. Again Nayakanai Nindra in Nayaki was epitome of sowkhyam. Ariyakudi tuned this Nayakanai nindra Tiruppavai in Durbar. MLV recorded this in Mohanam. TNS tuned this in Nayaki appropriately. The main ragam of the day was Kalyani and the kriti Talli ninnu nera of Syama Sastry. Kalyani was painted on a vast canvass in a very colourful manner revealing the multi hues of the ragam. His pliant voice traversing the octaves effortlessly showing the measured gamakams and lightning brighas revealed its grandeur and depth. The kriti was presented in the appropriate kalapramanam. Customary neraval on the lines Syama Krishna Paripalini and the following swaras with amazing its laya intricacies culminating in a complex korvai brought memoirs of many concerts of his Guru. The breezy Paraku neekelara – was new to me from the TNS school. I have never heard this from TNS.

The four hour concerts are giving the time to the musicians to embark upon expansive pallavis. Krishna utilised the opportunity to the brim. He chose Madhyamavathy for the elaborate four kalai pallavi with atheetha eduppu. In the days when four kalai pallavis have become a rare commodity, kudos to Krishna for this feat which was also a feast to the discerning raikas. The raga elaboration was one of its kind with many nagaswara pidis thrown in in appropriate junctures and the characteristic sacharams along the contours of the ragam vividly portrayed the beauty of the ragam. In the tanam, sruti bhedam was applied to show snatches of Mohanam. The pallavi and neraval were treated elaborately culminating in the trikalam which was handled with precision. The Ragamalika swaras had Nata, Gowla, Arabhi, Bahudari, Revati, Niroshta, Kadanakuthoohalam, Kunthalavarali and Panthuvarali.

All the post thani items had enough of raga bhavam and devotional element.
The pakkavadyams proved that they were pakkaa vadyams. Nagai Sriram on the Violin stood like a rock support for Krishna. He was in his sublime form. His raga essays had melody, manodharmam and proportion closely following the main singer. He could produce all the complicated swara passages of Krishna and precisely execute the tricky korvai at the end.

Vijay Natesan provided commendable support. His accompaniment for the kritis was noteworthy. The patterns he weaved on the toppi had novelty and clarity. He used his imaginative strokes with due diligence and succinct volume. He played with great understanding and his anticipation was commendable. The tani was interesting and engaging and the korvai at the end fantastic. Anirudh on the Ganjira proved himself to be a perfect foil for the virtuosity of Vijay Natesan and made the thani very enjoyable affair. A stellar concert indeed.

Wow 4 hours concert that TNS Krishna took another 30 mins. If my memory is right once in Russian Hall near Chola Hotel , i put a review of a madhyamavati RTP that TNS sir sang , that i think went with sangeetham. 2 years back when parivadhini gave TNSK a 4 hour slot he took extra 45 mins and sang with exuberance. We all have to collectively put TNS Krishna in the same zone as TNS of 1980's . Like Father Like Son with the same verve and confidence.
