Post by parivadini »

This Navaratri We bring you nine raga devathas as a tribute to Devis through the rendition of Nagaswaram Maestro Injikudi Mariappan.

On Day 1, we present - Raga Chandrajyothi. This is an extempore unedited rendition recorded in a temple setting. Shri. Mariyappan plays a short raga alapana and follows it up with a sweet tanam and thathakara pallavi and ends with a few rounds of swaras.

Lalitharam,
Thanks as always for your fine offerings. nAdaswarathukku chandrajyOthi eppaDi edupaDugiRadu (how well the rAgA lends itself to Mariappan's playing of the nAdaswaram)!

hamsa bhramari, novel in name and nature. OmkAri sounds as if Somu is singing!
Look forward to the rest of the six rAgAs.
Which temple is it? To see a new corner of it in every video is pleasing . Happy navarAtri :)

On Day 4, Injikudi Mariyappan plays raga Srotaswini.

Srotaswini scale is defined as the one with notes with Sudhdha Danyasi with a variation in the Nishadham. Scholars point out that Pracheena raga 'Udhaya Ravichandrika' had this scale. Muttuswami Dikshitar's "Shri Guruguhamurthe" is believed to be in this scale.

However, in today's parlance Udhayaravichandrika and Sudhdha Dhanyasi are considered one and the same. Hence the raga with the Kakali Nishada is referred to as Srotaswini.

While it is rare to find this raga in carnatic concerts, this raga has been extensively used in film music, particularly by Maestro Ilaiyaraja in both Tamil (Oh Vasanta Raja) and Telugu (Sumam Prati Sumam).

Vid. Mariyappan says he developed a liking for this raga after listening to the compositions of Ilaiyaraja

On Day 6, we present raga Vasukari a Janya of Shanmugapriya. This scale is again inspired by Vid. Madurai Somu.

He mentions this raga in a radio interview. Injikudi Mariyappan used that snippet as an inspiration to present this piece.

Lalitharam,
Thanks again for making the festival more meaningful for me with Vidvan Injikkudi Mariappan's excellent nine day treats. Loved it all--from the more familiar to the unknown ones. The finale was a favorite. I now realize why Manimaran's singing of Rasikapriya is special. No wonder, coming from a nAdaswaram tradition, he sings it so well!
Hope we see vidvan Mariappan playing more in Chennai and other places...
