Dr. L Subramanyam
Dear Rasikas,
I was a bit surprised that Dr. L Subramanyam is not found under this topic.Hence I have opened a thread on this great vidwan.
To start with Listen to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4oOB8EOe5g
The Accompaniment is by Palghat Mani Iyer.
There were several concerts in which he accompanied Sri MDR,SSI etc.
Although he has performed at Music Academy,Chennai and a very learned vidwan,He is not considered for MA honours.

That Revati is from a commercial album titled "Electric Modes". That CD also features a wonderful Ragam+Tanam in Hamsanadam. Most of the raaga essays in that CD are slow and contemplative. Recording is top notch. How I wish he'd release more carnatic albums (or perform carnatic concerts)!

Re: Dr. L Subramanyam
IS LS using double violin to play the above revati , this kind of heavy bass tone almost is like cello .

Thanks Mkal. This style is so uncharacteristic of LS that it took me by surprise. He finishes with the so-called Vedic swaras of Revati, maybe intentionally?

srkris,
The sleeve notes on that CD say that the album is dedicated to the memory of Smt. Viji Subramaniam. She is listed as playing the tampura in this however. Rajesh, there is no mention of the details regarding the instrument (although I've not personally seen/heard of anyone play the double violin except Sri. L. Shankar). It just says "Violin". The picture indicates a 5 stringed violin, but the resolution/size isn't good enough for me to say for sure how the thickness of the strings differ from a typical 4 stringed violin. The additional peg is on the side that features low frequency strings FWIW. There is another album (titled "Indian Classical Music") where he has played the 5 stringed violin and then accompanied (overdubbed) it on the viola.

Re: Dr. L Subramanyam
I never knew that that L subramanyam is a medical doctor by profession. This was mentioned few days back in the Hindu. It was also mentioned that LS was not that keen in completing the medical course in the second year as he wanted to focus only on music . LS's dad Shri Lakshminarayan was ok but LS mom insisted that he has to finish his medicine course .I was thinking that the Dr title was given for his music after few years , but never knew he is a stethoscope musician.

Re: Dr. L Subramanyam
Rajesh - he's never practiced medicine. I wonder if he's registered with the MCI. Back in those days, it was possible for people who were not planning to pursue clinical medicine to finish a 3-month rotation in community medicine (do not ask me why it mattered) as part of the compulsory rotating internship (instead of the 12 months that those that wanted to practice had to finish) and complete the requirements for the MBBS degree, but they'd not be able to register with the MCI as a practitioner of medicine or practice medicine.
