Thanks Varsha for that lovely photo. Apart from all the memorable accompaniment for yesteryear greats his high quality Hindustani playing lingers in the mind. A house-concert I heard in Kalpakkam circa 1988 I recollect v well. We will miss the smiling vibhuti-adorned Tejas.

Ah, such humility. I had the privilege of talking to him as a kid (~8 years old) when I was still learning violin and I still remember that he was courteous enough to let me see his instrument from a very close distance! I am not sure if any artiste would do that. I don't remember much from the interaction in Town Hall Bangalore. It was a Hindustani concert afaik.

Here is a fabulous Madhuvanti by two great men who are in heaven now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIlV2fUBIIs

And, an impromptu speech by both of them shows their humility.

Saddened by the news.
And how happy we were when his eightieth birthday was celebrated and Nageswaran shared the photos of the event with us!
MSG's pristine music and the Parur school will live on in the playing of Narmada, Sundareswaran and others--and in the hands of the grandchildren and theirs too, we hope.

and the audience was completely bowled over.
Who can ever forget that childlike smine ?

It wasn't easy for this giant to attain Greatness. Asura Sadhakam & attained mastery in two streams of Classical music. Had to compete with equally outstanding Violinists like Lalgudi Jayaraman & TN Krishnan. I always dream of a Violinist who will have bowing of TNK mama, Layam & creativity of Lalgudi Sir & those rare beautiful touches MSG Sir. That will be the ultimate in Carnatic violin playing. The Mylapore Fine Arts concert & Music Academy (all Tyagaraja) concerts with KVN keeps ringing in my ears all the time. May his soul Rest in Peace.

Just seeing this after a 40 hour journey, and this is utterly heartbreaking. I was wondering why MSG did not play this season. One of my favourite musicians of all time - who can forget those immortal naLinakAntis and mOhanams and pantuvarALis and his truly sublime accompaniment to the likes of TSK and GNB (THAT nATTaikurinji RTP!)... As a violinist, he had an unparalleled mastery of the instrument with an uncanny ability to reproduce any brigha at any speed on the violin. He has enriched our art immeasurably.

Condolences to his family, sishyas, and rasikas. He is one with the raga dEvatas now.

The first concert I can remember attending live was by Shri MSG. He had just visited my home in the morning and asked me to sing... I was so tense since I was a great fan of his. I sang the ritigauLa varNa which I learning at that time. Come concert time, I was seated on the floor right in the front [ah, those good old days of 'jamakALam' concerts]. He gave me his characteristic beaming smile and started the concert with the rItigauLa varNam. What a thrill for a little child! One of my cherished memories.

His accompaniment for GNB [nATakurinji pallavi], SSI [kIravaNi pallavi], MMI [tODi pallavi] was so special. His combination with KVN / Kalyanaraman / Voleti / DKJ etc etc... absolutely sublime.

RIP MSG Sir. Thanks for all the beautiful music.

I was fortunate to get his blessings during his visit to Bangalore in 2012 for the GK - MN violin concert.

Deep chasm is created by the loss of a talented soul.

May his soul rest in peace... Thanks for all the memories he created for the generations to come.

Cant believe it. What a muisican his keeravani pallavi accompanying semmangudi and many many numbers that he has played is etched in our memories. Personally I heard him 4 or 5 years back when he played tanayuni brova as main and that ultra fast brigas in mosaboku vinave in gowlipaNtu , that too the whole concert he was seated in a chair and not cross legged, but still gave a superb concert .He has certainly given us the best of music.

Condolences to his wife,Dr narmada ,suresh and all msg sishya paramparas

An amazing player of tAnam, with his impeccably controlled bowing and in solos his adventurous spirit prodding him to explore various Western techniques like spiccato, plucking. One of his aesthetic innovations was the use of S-P-S phrases in alapanais, a technique used by several violinists today (although not always with his sense of timing and sensitivity!).

Something that always strikes me in recordings is the sheer nonchalance with which he plays, always!

Very sad news!! His accompaniment to almost all musicians will remain etched in our memory. T.K. Rangachari's - garuDadhwani (tatvamEruga) and the rAgamAlika swara in darbAri kAnaDa come to mind almost immediately. His accompaniment to Chembai, DKJ, Voleti, Kalyanaraman will remain special May his soul rest in peace. His accompaniment for Balamurali - his dwi raga RTP (Amritavarshini-Anandabhairavi), Shruti bEdham RTP (nAgaswarAVaLi, hamsadhwani) were just tooooo good.

Nalinakanthi and Kalyani RTP that he played with his father Parur Sundaram Iyer is permanently itched in my memory. And that was in the early fifties at the Urdu Hall in Hyderabad. The father son duo had just returned from a very successful tour of Afghanistan (a country that had produced great classical Hindustani musicians). Hyderabad was honouring them. The young MSG took the rasikas by storm as it were with his extraordinary bowing technique and melodious music. Thanks for the rich treasure he has left behind.

Back from MSG's house after having a glimpse of his mortal remains

End of an era. The fingers that weaved magic for decades have rested forever. I dont know whether there can be another violonist like him in centuries to come.

I can't forget my first encounter with him during late 80's when I went to his house and picked him up for a lecdem on violin techniques at MA. I was part of YACM committee then. Neither can I forget the lecdem that he gave on that day, which was attended by Lalgudi siblings and other violinists. His single string demonstration of Bhairavi varnam in 2 speeds played on the last string will be with me for ever. Towards the end one old man from the audience got up and asked "how many swaras can you play in 1 bow ?" MSG gave his characteristic smile and replied "I am getting old, I can not take challenges, I play and you may please count". Then he played cutting bow, with the bow advancing half a millimeter or less for every cutting motion. It appeared never ending. When he reached the other end of the bow, he said "this is one way of playing many swaras in single bow" and then played a very fast sancharam of sindhu bhairavi in single bow and said "this is another way to play many swaras in 1 bow". The applause that followed still echos in my ears.

As a mark of respect, sangeethapriya website will display only a homage page today
