Found this very well written article on musical style, or bAni, by Vimala Sriram, which might spark some thought-provoking discussion here.
http://carnatica.net/special/essay-vimala.htm
From the article:
Can one consciously develop a bANi or is it inborn? The answer is yes and no. It is fifty percent conscious effort and fifty percent inborn. Rather with the given voice a person can consciously develop a style to suit the same, but the intelligence to do so is inborn! That intelligence can also be called creativity!
Please share your thoughts.

Re: bAni in Carnatic Music
During a lec dem by Radha Bhaskar at Raga Sudha Hall (i think some time in May this year) OST made a differentiation on what Bhani is ...
He said that "style", "School" and "Bhani" are totally different and he went on to explain with examples.
Style is unique to the person/performer ...like Kunnakudi style, Lalgudi style or MSG style....Only the respective person follows the style.
School is from where the patanthara is imbibed.....Like lalgudi school, Palani School, Maharajapuram school, Ariyakudi school etc - - students of the school follow the patanthara and method of singing/playing ....
Bhani is universal where almost everyone follows the legend....Here he gaave the example of GNB and he even made a short alapana in trude GNB styls and also his voice(later when we spoke he was very happy that he was able to imitate GNBs voice)....Bhani is one everyone follows and he said that no singer worth his salt can perform without any trace of GNB..that is Bhani....
It was interesting....
