Its a gem of a composition and has been sung by MS Subbulakshmi. The anupallavi mentions him as "paashaNda mata khaNdana shaNmata sthaapana sriman mahaa devendra saraswati" - the chittaiswara swarasahitya is a thing of beauty!
This krithi is available as a commercial recording byMSS in Shankarastuthi

Could anybody please comment on GNB's handling on the Ragam Sankarabharanam.

As you all know SSI had already created a stamp on this raga.

So how do you differentiate between him and GNB ?

GNB was a maestro in handling any raga but what abt this raga ?

Hi krishna212001,

I have once heard GNB's Nannu Brovakanu in Sankarabharanam -- it
is a superb rendition. Recommend you seek it out if you haven't already
heard it. I believe he has also sung many other major kritis -- Eduta Nilachite,
Emi Neramu, and Manasu Swadhina on tape.

My feeling is that GNB was excellent at handling this raga, but not exceptionally
great like he was at Kambhoji/Bhairavi/Thodi/Yadhukula Kambhoji, which
without exception bear a distinctive GNB stamp. But of course we don't have
access to many recordings of masters like GNB today, so it may well be unfair
to make this comment -- I wouldn't be surprised if the reason for this impression
is the relative paucity of GNB's Sankarabharanam recordings!

Not to take away anything from SSI, but I wonder if SSI is best known for his Sankarabharanam. Here we are talking about the 'trademarks' associated with stalwarts and not their capability to sing these ragas as good as anyone else in the top tier. With respect to such trademarks, for me SSI goes with Shanmukhapriya, Mukhari ( especially Kshenamai ) and to some extent Huseni and Mayamalavagowla.

I am a regular listener of FM Gold Carnatic Music programmes. On 2nd Dec'07 , around 1.15 pm I turned to FM Gold and I was given a very good feast of Sankarabharanam by a new voice. It was so nice that it still remains afresh in my heart. After the Violinst's reply, the vocalist started SarOjadaLa nEtri and surprisingly he did neraval at ' parAku sEyaka varadAyaki' (never heard earlier) and was beautifully proceeding. Unfortunately, the power went off and I could not hear further. Any of our other member heard the programme?

Divine music prevails infinitely.

I hv not heard MDR version. But, I felt very happy, as the artist took a different place for neraval sensibly (usually at sAma gAna vinOdini).

This Major Scale rAg has enormous scope for elaboration. One can not limit its scope within certain time frame. I believe there are about 1300 kritis in this particular rAg. This is an International famous & ancient rAg.

The Mela Kartha number 29 has (5x5 + 2x2) as well as (3x3 + 4x4 + 2x2) equations. Simply great, symmetrical scale rAg.
