Recently I heard a rendition of Natakapriya by Bombay Sisters. It had the flavour of both Todi and Kharaharapriya. I would like to learn more about this ragam. I know it uses shuddha rishabham, and shares the rest of the swaras with Kharaharapriya.

What are the kritis in this ragam? Does anyone have any recordings of this ragam that they can share?

thanks
Jayaram

10th mela
ThanjAvur Sanakra Iyer’s GIta vAdya natana nAtkapriye is a beautiful compostion which DKJ and MLV used to sing .Then SudhAnanda BhArathi’s song starting with the rAga name.
Sindhu bhairavi is considered to be it’s janya according to some texts.

gIta vAdya is a very nice composition. I have heard TVS, DKJ and SK Vageesh's renditions of the same.

There is a very nice vAsudEvAchArya composition "idi samayamu brOvarAda". Sri Nedunuri has rendered it in the 1982 Krishna Gana Sabha concert that, I think, is now available commercially.

Not sure why Sindhubhairavi is considered a janya of Natakapriya - sindhubhairavi seems to use all 12 swaras.
I have heard interesting debates on how to assign ragas to Janaka melas.

The Bombay sisters rendition of this ragam had a strong Todi & Kh.priya feel to it. Is this how it should be sung?

There are three scales given for sindhubhairavi under mELA 10:
MPDNDSRGM/GRSNDPMGM (Abraham Panditar)
MPDNSRGM/GRSNDPMGM (Nadamuni Panditar)
MPDNSRGM/GRSNDPMG (T.A.Sambandamurti)

There is also a wonderful composition in nATakapriyA: "mAra jananIm AShrayE," (I think) by kr.shNAmAccAryA and popularized by MLV. The yati pattern in the pallavi is quite catchy. I recall hearing from a lecdem years ago that this rAga is is the combination of half tODi ( srgm )and half saurAShTram/cakravAham (pdns).

This was composed by NCV Krishnamacharyulu, violinist from AP who has performed quite regularly with MLV and many other artists.

cminblood,
Welcome, and thanks for your links. Please keep posting your views and sharing tracks when appropriate.
Just a word of caution: because people are very sensitive to being acknowledged and behave in inappropriate ways when they imagine a slight, I would suggest just posting the link to the page you initially d/led the tracks from, or acknowledging the site when you repost the tracks.
Once again, thanks for the tracks: very wonderful!
Ravi

Ravi: Thanks for the word of caution and suggestion regarding pointing to primary download source while posting. As a matter of fact I got these from three different sources and none of them commercial. Furhtermore, I was not aware that these recordings were commercially available. My sincere apologies...cmi

Vocalist: I am not completely sure that that piece is available on commercial recording, I believe it was in one of ShrI coolkarni's concert posts. coolkarni Sir, could you check?

If you want to hear a commercial track, I believe Sudha Ragunathan has rendered it in her AVM album, Devi Krithis. It is a rare composition in this rAga.

Is there a Vasudevachar's 'Dasarathe' in Natakapriya ? The Dasarathe referred to above could be Thygaraja's 'Dasarathe' in Kokilapriya, the one next to Natakapriya among 72. I have heard that Version of Srinivas'. It is also available in Susarla's site of Thygaraja Krithis.

http://surasa.net/music/karnatak/contrib/ has a concert (thanks to Prashant) of Nedunuri Garu with an excellent Natakapriya followed by a scholarly rendition of Idi Samayamu. Am becoming a fan of Vasudevacharya's compositions. The raga lakshana in his kritis is majestic. Nedunuri Garu gives his kritis (ninne nammiti, idi samayamu, ra ra rajeevalochana etc) that extra tinge of sweetness with his captivating embellishments.
