Thank you very much Shri Shankaran K 🙏

It says recorded in 1930.
If that’s right, she would have been 12/13 years old.

Have you seen this article?
Oldest record of Rajam Pushpavanam’s is in 1930.

More like micro. 4:35 to 5:12! Less than 40 seconds. But delightful nonetheless. :)

A rare theme ...a mild rebuke of SRI RAAMAA.

Comments -by sri.v.govindan

1 - nirmOhi – SrI tyAgarAja seems to have, on purpose, praised the Lord as father of kuSa and lava, because SrI rAma knowing that sItA was pregnant, banished her to forest. Earlier He made sItA undergo fire ordeal. These instances, particularly with regard to His beloved wife, show that SrI rAma regarded virtues and His rAja dharma above affections. Therefore, SrI tyAgarAja calls him nir-mOhi.http://thyagaraja-vaibhavam.blogspot.co ... -raga.html

Is above really rendered in Hamirkakyani ? Imho does it not look like just yaman/kalyani ? Bcos in renditions by other artists the typical characteristic phrase was clear..
Thx anyway

Sujamusic.wordpress.com

Hameer Kalyani
The scales of Raga Hameer (or Hamir) Kalyani are as follows :

Aarohanam (Ascending) : S P M2 P D2 N3 S’
Avarohanam (Descending) : S’ N3 D2 P M2 M1 G3 P M1 R2 S

It is a Janya raga, derived from Mecha Kalyani which is 65th on the Melakarta Scale (see below).

65 Kalyani
This is an import from Hindustani Music but has become an integral part of Carnatic Music now. An elegant raga, it has a weave and flow built into it which, I think, makes it very pleasing indeed. It can be sung to show a sense of supplication; it can also convey a sense of gentleness and peace. There are some beautiful compisition in this raga, such as the Venkata Shaila by Subbaraya Shastri, Manamu Leda by Tyagaraja, Parimala Ranganatham by Muthuswami Dikshithar and Gangeya Vasana by Swathi Thirunal. But the first song I always remember is Thoomani Madathu, the Thiruppavai song set to Hameer Kalyani by the great Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar.
..
I think, the MSS version is much closer to ARI.

Ragam hameer kalyaNi dies not seem to have been discussed in ragas section of this forum.
Generally, there may be fine differences in the treatment of HM related raagams between SS and Thyagaraja school and that of MD.
@Srinath specialises in such analysis
A request, if he finds time

Here's my say, NOT from an expert at all, but from my childhood experience. I have heard ARI, VVS sing mAnamu lEdA, thUmaNi mADathu and also Subbaraya Shastry's VenkaTa Saila vihAra in what was called amIr kalyANi and I remember B.Rajam Iyer writing it down as hamIr kalyani in my aunt Jayalakshmi Santhanam's music note book!
Ari must have fancied the rAgA then and so sang it often and tuned a tiruppAvai with it too.

Thanks for all delights!
Ari's breezy, enthused expression in singing about VenkaTESa. T.Brinda singing it as a chiselled piece of beauty, dwelling in subbaraya Shastry's adoration of the Lord. A step by step description the song is, like climbing the hill to the shrine. I remember the line (as a child) maNTapa, Ari reverting back and singing ma...Ni...maNTapa! Loved hearing that. Notice that he doesn't sing the last verse.
Both of them sing the charaNam line as vinTIni. That was more current then and it is more appealing in meaning too, I feel.

Now, you are putting a non-expert to test, RSR! After many years of our not seeing any tamizh movies, videos came about and the first film we saw was Sindhubhairavi which amazed us. What a giant step in tamizh cinema, I thought. Why this reference? Because of that song in it: pADaRiyEn--how it was just a reflection of my non-expertise in music, I felt. So, rasikkath theriyum, and that about sums it up and at Rasikas.org which teems with experts, I am the wrong person to answer your question!

Madam, if i had given that impression, my sincere apologies.
.
I have read that while Brundha sang the saahithyam, Muktha would sing the same as swaram. Should have been thrilling. I wanted just a confirmation from a veteran like you. I know that you too learned from great musicians.
.
Perhaps kishore can find the slight difference between the MD school ..and
Thyagaraja swami school.

My Mind! O Virtue-less!

How shall I tolerate? Accept my appeal.

Why is it that you wouldn’t listen even when exhorted to spend days by becoming humble and chanting the names of Lord rAma - the adornment of Solar dynasty?
Why is it that you wouldn’t listen to the words of this tyAgarAja who gives you suggestions for being redeemed easily in the kali yuga, instead of wandering here entangled in the company of those endowed with qualities of passion and inertia and thus wasting time?

How shall I tolerate? Accept my appeal.

I did find an existing discussion here in forum on (h)Amir kalyani aka hameer kalyani or humveeru in MD school .
https://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopi ... c114843e57
Hope above link i pasted rightly. That thread has fairly good details by one "vageyakara" about this ragam imported/adapted from kEdAr raag of KalyAn thAt in HM by our great MD into CM. Beauty i feel is the Dhrupad style he used in his kriti Parimala Ranganatham similar to his jambupathe of Yamuna kalyani . It has a characteristic "swinging style" which brings out the beauty or melody of the ragam esp the characteristic M1,M2 (both madhyamam) usage as well as both Nishadam (N2,N3) too.
Here's https://youtu.be/Gy74_ndRc3Y
@9:00 vidwan Trichur Ramachandran explains it in his own words in midst of his rendering of MD kriti on dhrupad swinging style )
Imho (I am no way expert just a listener ) I just find bcos MD introduced this ragam first he made it more closer to HM or preserved melodic aspect slightly better than ST kritis. Perhaps that having used to this MD way made me think that the one rendition of ST kriti MS sang in link you gave here little different.
-- i may be wrong too.
Also a blog of Anuradha Mahesh beautifully goes into full details of ragam if ones interested to read.
https://anuradhamahesh.wordpress.com/ca ... m-n-india/
Hope this post doesn't distract from main theme of this thread ,in case so it can be moved under ragas or as appropriate.

Delighted to come back with a rare scintillating rpm recording of the legend, M. S. Subbulakshmi. This is a very rare tamil composition, 'Innum Paramukammen Murugaiyyane, Ennai Aalum Meiyyane', set to the ragam bhairavi. This is probably the only version of MS amma singing it. Thanks to suja music blog.
......
Today I present D.V.Paluskar (1921-1955) singing this song with beauty. The quality of recording is not the best but Paluskar’s astonishing skills are unmistakable. It is set to raga is Jaijaivanti, called Dwijavanti in the Carnatic system.

"Thumak Chalat Ramchandra...
Pandit D V Paluskar"

https://youtu.be/TnvFvyH5v0U?si=e9sw6lsfqXRjAe_2

Suja madam adds

How can one separate the music of India from its Gods? Devotion is a thread which links disparate parts of India together, just as music does
. In the South, Carnatic music is almost all devotional. Though Hindustani music seems a bit more secular, the underpinning devotion is not far away.

The Sufi Qawwalis that I love are Islamic devotional music
. And then there is the devotional music from different regions – be it Bhajans all over India,
Abhangs from Maharashtra,
Kirtan from Punjab,
Baul from Bengal, to name a few.
There is the poetry of Kabir from Uttar Pradesh,
Meera from Rajasthan, Jayadeva from Orissa, Avvayar from Tamil Nadu and so many other equally famous Saint-Poets who have paved the way for the Indian music of today.
Additionally, there are sacred chants in Sanskrit from Vedic times, a couple of thousand years before Christ – chants which are still sung in much the same way even today in many households, mine included.

Even when it comes to popular music, devotion is not ignored. Composers for Indian films often include devotional music of some sort.
Who can remain unmoved by Man tarpat hai from Baiju Bawra or
Ay Malik Tere Bande Hum from Do Aankhen Bara Haath? The current trend is to include some Sufiana music in almost every film.

Today I am posting a bhajan written by Saint Tulsidas (1532-1623), a bhajan which is known and loved by millions. The poet says :

It describes the little Lord Rama in beguiling terms. The poet imagines him as a little child, his anklets ringing, tottering unsteadily as he just learns to walk. His mother and nurses take him in their laps in turn. What an adorable picture is painted by the poet! The last couplet is significant; when Tulsidas tries to give a simile for little Rama’s beauty, he fails to find an equivalent and can only compare Him to Himself!
