Thanks - got to see the photos. Very nice to see the presence of senior musicians in the audience. I note you have used Kannan for the sound system. They do a great job - I used them for the kutcheri at my wedding!

it was a nice evening. from the list by Rajesh, i knew almost none of the songs. just the varnam and the dikshitar kritis were familiar ones.

Ram and I had to leave when he began the sindhubhairavi slokam.

How did you know?! In fact I was away showing around Chennai to some Italian visitors, having forgotten the change of date and still thinking that the concert is on Sunday.
What a pity! Any way I eagerly await the uploads now...

Its ok... I've now pretty much sorted out which of the roads converging on Panagal Park goes where --- and which is my route home :)

No sign of the mail yet, Ram... I'll keep an eye open and let you know if it doesn't arrive.

Better still, I'll mail you my number: one direction or the other is bound to get through!

Nick: My email ID is [email protected]

I think the emails sent through the forum take some time to arrive.

Coolji: I think Nick knows Chennai roads better than I do. I almost took him on a site-seeing tour of Mambalam when returning back last time ;)

In an otherwise a very enjoyable evening with GSM, there was a jarring note - I am referring to GSM's statement about brahman as 'sUnya'.
That a person who would sing saundarya lahari - kvaNat kAnci dAmA - so nicely to enable listeners behold the Mother in all her beauty, should describe that same 'AhO puruShikA' as 'sUnya' is not very convincing. Did he fumble in selection of words? Much would I like to forget these words, they ring in my ears discordantly.

vgv,

A google search on sunya and brahman (sunya brahman) returns many relevant hits. This concept of sunya with brahman (the nothing/void that is all) seems like a strand of Hindu philosophy.

arun,
sUnya vAda belongs to buddhism.
'brahman' is not 'nothingness' or 'void';
the triple designation of brahman is 'sat-cit-Ananda'. 'sat' is 'being' or 'existence' and not 'nothing' or 'void'.

vgv,

ok - i see that it does fit best with buddhist philosophy - this being the critical difference with Hindu philosophy.

But my point was it may not be a slip in choice of words.

In IshAvAsya if you replace 'pUrNaM with shUnyaM everything holds. In fact in mathematics infinity and zero map onto each other and both are indeterminate. In fact 'zero' as we know is the contribution of the Indian philosophers (not buddhists!). Again shUnya (as per indian philosophy is not 'nothing'. It is like the 'point' in geometry which exists but has no dimentions. The point generates the rest of the dimentions though it is of shUnya dimension. Hence don't be too hasty in condemning GSM; both of you are looking at the same thing. Just review the theory of 'Big Bang' and see how logical the shUnya concept is !

Further if you check the dictionary (Apte) for the meaning of shUnyaM, one of the meaning is Brahman!

Basically, the parabrahma cannot be defined by any word or language:- for once that can be classified or decsribed by a word, that beocmes bound by or limited to the meanings and connotaions of that word/definition. And that simply is not parabrahma anymore. So SUnya and pUrNa can both be taken to parabrahma. IMO that does not necessarily negate the existence of tat

Without any intentions of blasphemy "pUrNamadaH pUrNamidam pUrNAt pUrNamudacyatE-- "can equally be correct if one says "SUnyamadaH SUnyamidam SUnyAt SUnyamudacyatE----".

Yes- if argument is what was started here, there is no need for it.
If we all had complete faith in our beliefs, we would have no need to ask questions; or for that matter be disturbed by what G.S.Mani or anyone says.

In the vyAkyAnAs for tiruvAymozhi, the authors state that "If somebody says I have understood who SrImannArAyaNan is, then he has not understood anything about who HE is & if somebody says I do not know anything about SrImannArAyaNan, then he has understood everything about who HE is". This is similar to "vAcAmagOcara mE manasa" of SrItyAgarAjar.

Ah !
But most of us in the Concert Hall were very much like me and all my classmates (in 7th standard) when we listened to Sivram Karanth delivering his concluding speech after our school debate (on Does God Exist or NOT) was over.
(we could could be swayed any way-depending on the speaker !)
:P
On that day , many years ago, For 10 engrossing minutes,Sivram Karanth had spoken on why he thought God did not exist , and we all were sure that God indeed ,did not exist .

And for the next 10 minutes he spoke on why he thought God existed , and we were now convinced that this was as clear as daylight.Where was the doubt ?

Back home I was exasperated and asked my only other authoritative source then -My Dad - for the answer and he responded with a hearty laugh ..
Boy ! You have to just pick up a short stick, tie a spare set of clothes and a few books into a bundle and walk across the length and breadth of your land , observing human nature by day and watching the stars by night -Then maybe, you may get your own answers.
How Can I tell you !

Anyway , I feel we are missing the context in which these words were spoken.Let us wait till the Audio-Videos are out.

Just wanted to mention that the word 'pUjyaM' means 'zero' in Tamil (and I assume other dravidian languages) but just means venerable in sanskrit. In sanskrit zero is denoted by 'shUnya (which as I mentioned also means 'brahman'). It shows in our dravidian languages we indirectly venerate 'zero' as the Godhead himself. Juust recollect Kannadasan
'pUjiyathtin uLLirunthu rAjjiyaththai ALum puNNIyan..'

coolkarNi

nice story! if only it is possible to find the answer to that question by tying a cloth to a stick and travelling the length of the country I am ready :) But I find it mighty easy to get the same answer by just relaxing on my bed with the divine CM reverberating around!

Guys... When the concert included the Muslim call to prayer, I think we can be fairly relaxed about whatever other concepts may have been included :)

Tribute by Neyveli Santhangopalan and Response by GS Mani.
Cool-ji, the response by GSM-sir seems to have been chopped off. Can you pls repost the whole clip if you have it. GSM was elaborating an interesting philosophical point...Many thanks

Btw, GSM's linking of MMGowla to the Adhan (Muslim call to prayer) is brilliant. He is a true yogi who goes beyond religious boundaries...

Dear Kulkarni,

Thank you for this wonderful concert by Shri GS Mani and the previous one by Shri Ramaprasad.

I had not visted the forum since early February I am an accountant and this is the busiest time of the year :(

Even when I visit, I will glance thru ragas/vidwans and move on.

And all the action has been under general discussions. I logged in over the weekend and saw all the amazing things happening in chennai. I would like to contribute in some small way towards arranging these events. Can you pelase send me your mailing address?

You introduced me to Shri GS Mani and now this full length concert of his compositions. Thank you so much.

Laxmi
